Her Mathematical Lineage (Part II) Return to
Part I
Dr. Haynsworth, a proud native of Sumter in South Carolina, earned her Ph.D at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in the mid-1950s, where her work was directed by Alfred T. Brauer. Dr. Brauer came to the United States in the late 1930s, a displaced Jew from Nazi Germany. He earned his doctorate at the University of Berlin in the late 1920s, and was a student of Issai Schur. Frobenius also earned his doctorate at the University of Berlin, in 1870, where he studied under the great Karl Weierstrass. Gudermann Thus, Emilie Haynsworth is among the more than people awarded doctorates whose mathematical lineage links directly back to "The Prince of Mathematics," Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss. Introduction
The gamma function was first introduced by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) in his goal to generalize the factorial to non integer values. Later, because of its great importance, it was studied by other eminent mathematicians like Adrien-Marie Legendre (1752-1833), Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855), Christoph Gudermann (1798-1852), Joseph Liouville (1809-1882), Karl Weierstrass (1815-1897), Charles Hermite (1822-1901), ... as well as many others. The gamma function belongs to the category of the special transcendental functions and we will see that some famous mathematical constants are occurring in its study. It also appears in various area as asymptotic series, definite integration, hypergeometric series, Riemann zeta function, number theory ... Some of the historical background is due to Godefroy's beautiful essay on this function [ ] and the more modern textbook [ ] is a complete study.
    Definitions of the gamma function
    Definite integral
During the years 1729 and 1730 ([ ]), Euler introduced an analytic function which has the property to interpolate the factorial whenever the argument of the function is an integer. In a letter from January 8, 1730 to Christian Goldbach he proposed the following definition :

What are some of the common and "special" numerical functions?
Well, people have been inventing special functions ad nauseam . The list is quite literally endless, but we may attempt the beginning of a classification for those functions which are common enough to have a universally accepted name. Let's start with the truly elementary functions:
    • Polynomial functions: The value y is obtained from the variable x using only a finite number of additions and/or multiplications involving given constants. The simplest such function is the
