FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 2, NO. 26
25 JUNE 2001

Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services ( http://home.att.net/~gklund/ ) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm . Currently FIU is sent to about 5,000 email addresses world-wide including distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde
FIU SPONSORS - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through the generous support of:
  • ESRI - As the leader in GIS technology, ESRI offers innovative solutions that will help you create, visualize, analyze, and present natural resources information better and more clearly. Working with location information, ESRI's GIS software and solutions give you the power to solve problems you encounter every day. Forestry and other natural resource organizations around the world are using this ESRI software to make smart and timely decisions. ESRI provides powerful GIS solutions to more than 300,000 clients in more than 189 countries and offers mapping technology to meet today's global needs. The research notebook of a beleaguered hack. Main July 16, 2002 Struik: A Concise History of Mathematics: The Seventeenth Century The production of machines and tools in the Seventeenth Century spurred the developments of mechanics and motion. Several authors provided early writings on machines: Kyeser (c. 1400), Leon Battista Alberti (c. 1450), and da Vinci (c. 1500). Tartigula's Nuova scienzia looked at clocks and the orbit of projectiles. Much interest revolved around statics, and computing the center of gravity. Aided by translations of Heron and Archimedes, Sion Stevin, Luca Valerio and Paul Guildin pioneered methods to compute centroids, paving the way for the likes of Kepler, Cavalieri, and Torricelli. Departing from Greek notions of rigor in favor of quick results 17th century astronomy made contributions. Kepler looked at volume computation in Stereometria doliorum vinorum (1615). Gilileo devised a mechanics for freely falling bodies, a start of a theory of elasticity. As an mathematical experimentalist, Galileo studied motion and presented his ideas in Discorsi (1638). He also provided parabolic orbits, and tables to compute height and range given initial conditions. Toriricelli and Cavalieri were his pupils. Cavalieri provided the first systematic exposition on calculus in

1999 Environmental Sustainability and Public Policy Conference
Towards a Vision for Missouri's Private Forests
March 4th and 5th 1999 *** University of Missouri - Columbia
Approximately 85% of Missouri's 14 million acres of forest are private, the majority in tracts of less than 1,000 acres distributed among as many as 200,000 owners. This conference explores the intersections of science, economics, human behavior, and public policy with respect to these private forests. It is intended for forest landowners, scholars, students, forestry professionals, resource management agency officials and interesed citizens This conference is the third in a series of conferences on "Environmental Sustainability and Public Policy" sponsored by the Environmental Affairs Council and Environmental Studies Program at the University of Missouri- Columbia in cooperation with a number of other agencies and organizations. Because it also follows a previous conference at Southeast Missouri State University in 1992, "Towards a Vision for Missouri's Public Forests," the focus of this conference is on private forest lands. Speakers and panelists will assess the history and current status of Missouri's forests and the prospects for sustaining the full range of products, processes, and values they provide. Following a keynote address by Dr. Paul Ellefson of the University of Minnesota onpolicy initiatives in states throughout the nation, two half-day panels on Friday will consider emerging trends in demands for resources impinging on Missouri's private forest lands and the range of public policies that might be considered in Missouri to encourage sustainability.

Forests, source of life General outline of the theme and the technical program (Version 2.0)
PRELIMINARY, for discussion purpose, November 7, 2001 The World Forestry Congress
The World Forestry Congress is the largest, most important international gathering of key players in the forestry sector. Organized under the aegis of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Congress takes place every six years. It is a forum for exchanging a wide range of views, where ideas and actions having a direct impact on forests and on forest management can be presented and discussed so that practical solutions can be found. Overall, the discussions are intended to bring together the breadth of knowledge, experiences and approaches from around the world to guide forest policy, practices, research and international cooperation. In addition to regular working sessions, the congress will showcase the latest advances in forestry. The World Forestry Congress is not a meeting of officials representing governments and organizations. Rather, participants attend in their personal capacity to express their own views. For this reason, its role is consultative rather than executive. Theme In keeping with its theme, the XII World Forestry Congress will explore innovative ways to address current and emerging issues, including those of a cross-sectoral and inter-disciplinary nature. Every effort will be made to structure and facilitate discussions among participants to help formulate recommendations and forge a vision of the future based on a harmonious, balanced approach to sustainable forest management and its many dimensions.
