Introduction
Gunter Podola was the last person executed in this country for the murder of a policeman. Such a crime was a capital offence under The Homicide Act 1957. During the period 1900 and 1975, 33 men serving with London's Metropolitan Police were murdered on duty. Gunter Fritz Erwin Podola was born on 8 February 1929 in the Templehof area of Berlin. His Mother, Elizabeth, died in Berlin on 12 February 1955 at the age of 62. His Father, a barber by trade, was killed fighting with the German army on the Russian Front during World War Two. Podola grew up in the working class district around Alexander Square, Berlin. Although he was too young to fight in the war, Podola was known to be a fanatical member of the Hitler Youth movement.
Podola's Life in Canada
August to October 1952 Podola worked as a general labourer at the Mount Gabriel Club, Quebec. October 1952 to May 1953 Farm labourer for Mr. McArthur Kelly, Huntingdon, Quebec.

Prof. Nolte joined the Department of Visual Arts in 1977 and was chair from 1993 to 1995. He remained on faculty as a part-time guest professor until 1999. Following are excerpts from a eulogy delivered by Edmund Alleyn, former University of Ottawa professor and colleague.
To speak of Gunter in a few words is difficult, as he himself would probably agree, because he was the sum of many different parts. But what brought all these together was his deep integrity, intellectual generosity and an ever-present sense of wonder with a truly encyclopedic range. He embraced the old world as well as the new. He liked to shuttle between the past and the present. And his vitality could have powered a dozen lives.
He loved life and was intent on ordering and recording as many of its sensations, moments and highlights as possible. His many notes on various subjects — on his university life, on his activity as an artist, on the places and moments of enjoyable leisure — are all documented with the photographs of a thousand memories, as if it were possible to live and re-live all simultaneously.

Scene: A gurnard, a gusset, and a Gunter's chain, sitting in Gurgan. Gurnard: I am really not sure why I am here. As a member of the marine fish family Triglidae, this seems like an odd place to be. Gusset: Me too. I bet most people don't know I am a triangular insert in a garment used for strengthening. Gunter's Chain: Apparently the author doesn't even understand what I am, he just saw that it was in the dictionary, named after some English mathematician named Edmund Gunter. Gusset: And where is Gurgan? Gurnard: Isn't that an island? Gurgan's Island? I call dibs on Mary Ann! Gusset: Dibs on Ginger! Gunter's Chain: Oh, man, I get Mrs. Howell? Good grief, sure they called her Lovey on the show, but really, was she the kind of woman you would call Lovey? Maybe Looney, but Lovey? Gurnard: Excuse me, it's time for me to leave a gurry. Gusset: Do your gurry in a hurry. That's the slogan for the new Zip Lock Toilet! It bags, it seals, no mess! Gurnard: What are you talking about? Gusset: What are you talking about? Who uses the word gurry anyways? Only professional fishermen living in the Baltic talking about fish offal. Offal, who uses THAT word? Gurnard: I'm going to try to live my life sin free. Yes, I want to be Saint Gurnard.

51. Gunter's Scale
are usually defined today; as lengths of lines rather than ratios oflengths of lines. Read about edmund gunter By Gordon Talge.
http://artematrix.org/computer.collection/gunters.scale.htm
Gunter's Scale
I am reading about it in Moore's "Practical Navigator" (1798) and in Andrew Mackay's "The Complete Navigator" (1807). Very clever device. I quote from Mackay The ruler in general use in navigation, is that known by the name of "Gunter's Scale". The length of this scale is usually two feet, and about an inch and a half broad. One side of this scale contains lines for constructing geometrical figures; and the lines upon the other side are call "artificial", or "logarithmic" lines, being intended to resolve the questions in the several sailings, and to perform other mathematical operations. Side 1:
  • Scales of equal parts Chords, marked CHO Rhumbs RHU Sines SIN Secants SEC Tangents TAN Semi-Tangents S.T. Longitudes M.L.
Side 2:
  • Sine rhumbs S.R. Tangent T.R. Numbers NUM Sines SIN Versed sines V.S. Tangents TAN Meridioinal parts MER. Equal Parts E.P.
The chapter goes on to describe how to contruct a gunter's scale mathematically. Very very clever device! It seems that the Gunter's scale is a precursor to the slide rule. You use it by measuring off distances and values with a pair of dividers or compasses. The trig functions are defined in an equivalent, but different way, then they are usually defined today; as lengths of lines rather than ratios of lengths of lines.

The success with which the conspirators concealed their plot from Salisbury’s spies is indeed astonishing, but is probably explained by its very audacity and by the absence of incriminating correspondence, the medium through which the minister chiefly obtained his knowledge of the plans of his enemies. was put back for centuries. In addition a new, increased and long-enduring hostility was aroused in the country against the adherents of the old faith, not unnatural in the circumstances, but unjust and undiscriminating, because while some of the Jesuits were no doubt implicated, the secular priests and Roman Catholic laity as a whole had taken no part in the conspiracy.
