John Ebner
John Ebner takes special delight in painting rainy day people in urban settings. In both images, his signature subjects make colorful statements in misty cityscapes. "I identify with my rain people, and nearly all of my paintings include the name of a family member or a friend. Who doesn't love to imagine taking refuge in a cozy pizza shop that memorializes a close friend?" the artist asks. In addition to Mr. Ebner's popularity with collectors, his art has received critical acclaim, winning numerous awards during his 20 year career.

    Those from Westford Who Served
    During
    The American War for Independence
T he following names, primarily found in Hodgman's History of Westford , list all those from Westford, Massachusetts who served in one or more of the American military institutions of the American Revolution. These include the local militia and minute companies, provincial regiments raised by the state (such as Col. Robinson's regiment), or the Continental Army. Sources include Massachusetts State Archive muster rolls, pay records, town and county records, and other records which are not completely described. Additional names found in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War, 1775-1783 have been added to the list. Discrepancies between various sources have been noted. An asterisk next to a name indicates that the individual died as a result of his military service. One source (a monument on the Westford common) indicates that 35 men died as a result of military service during the Revolution. So far, I have only been able to document 19. If you can point me toward a good source for such information, I would appreciate it if you could forward me the reference.

ANGEL OF HADLEY FACT OR MYTH?
Whalley and Goffe in Massachusetts make their home.
Then to Quinnipiac in haste pursue their way,
Nor know they where to rest, nor where to roam,
Until in Hadley concealed and lonely they stay.

from: The Story of Connecticut , Lewis Sprague Mills, 1932. For inquiries contact Libby Klekowski
Who were Whalley and Goffe? Why did they need to be lonely and concealed in Hadley? Let's begin the story September 1, 1675.
There were rumors of war up and down the Connecticut River. King Philip and his warriors were attacking the colonial outposts of Deerfield and Northfield. The inhabitants of Hadley (approximately 50 families) were observing a Fast Day service when the attack came. The villagers were unprepared. Even though they rushed out of the Meeting House, guns ready to fire, they were totally unorganized and ineffectual. Suddenly there appeared among them an elderly man, a man whom no one recognized. Who was he? Where did he come from? This stranger took command, arrayed the townspeople in a military manner, and helped them repel the warriors. As suddenly as he had appeared, he disappeared. The villagers could not explain what had happened so proclaimed their savior an angel sent by God.
What the good people of Hadley did not know was that their minister, John Russell, had been secretly housing two men, General Edward Whalley and General William Goffe, for eleven years - since 1664. These two men were on-the-run, dodging the King of England's agents, hiding out in the wilds of the recently settled colonies of New England.
