ADRIAN HOUGH
Edmond Halley in "Isaac Newton: A Tale of Two Isaacs" Adrian Hough personifies perfectly the attributes of competitiveness yet supportiveness that make Edmond Halley one of the few contemporaries Newton trusts and respects. "Aside from being quite brilliant himselffor example, he invented the diving bellHalley was very much an enabler of other scientists," says Hough. "He was good at getting them to cooperate for the greater good of the Royal Society. But he was especially close to Newton. For example, he edited the 'Principia,' which sometimes meant actually sifting through Newton's messy stacks of notes and convincing Newton that he was on to something brilliant." Playing Halley in DEC's Isaac Newton was "one of the largest, nicest parts I've ever done," he addsnice, he elaborates, because it taps into why he loves acting. "I love the chance to go into another person's life, and if you do it right, someone else can see inside too. We tend to think of these inventorsNewton, of course, but also Halleyas being these brilliant, stern, intimidating creatures, and I hope our performances, mine included, can show young viewers what it was really like to be those people." He and Marina live in Rosedale with their two-year-old daughter, Sophie. When time permits, Hough plays pickup basketball and works out at the gym.

Edmond Halley (1656 bis 1742 nach Christus)
Sein Name lebt in dem Halleyschen Kometen weiter. Der englische Astronom wurde am 8. November 1656 in Haggerstone, London, geboren.

English astronomer and mathematician, Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford, strong supporter of Isaac Newton, member of the Royal Society, first to detect the proper motion of stars, discovered the 76-year cycle of the comet that bears his name. Edmond Halley was born on October 29, 1656 in the village of Haggerston, England. Today, this village is part of London. Halley was the son of a prosperous land owner. He eventually attended the St. Paul's school where he was appointed captain in 1671. It is a position similar to today's student body president. Halley did very well in school and attended the Queen's college in Oxford in 1673. He became a member of the Royal Society at the age of 22. Halley was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1704. In 1720 he succeeded John Flamsteed as astronomer royal. Halley was an extremely talented scientist in many disciplines. He supported Isaac Newton both morally and financially, and was partly responsible for persuading him to publish his works. From the island of Saint Helena, Halley catalogued the positions of around 350 Southern Hemisphere stars and observed a transit of Mercury. He believed that this phenomenon and future transits of Venus be used to determine the distance of the Sun. Halley also used the the first transit instrument at the Greenwich Observatory and devised a method for determining longitude at sea by means of lunar observations. In 1710, comparing current star positions with those listed in Ptolemy's catalog, he deduced that the stars must have a slight motion of their own, and he detected this proper motion in three stars.

    Sir Edmond Halley

PHILOSOPHICAL TRANSACTIONS VOL. XXIX (1716) A new Method of determining the Parallax of the Sun, or his Distance from the Earth; by Dr. Halley, Sec. R. S. N0 348, p.454. Translated from the Latin. I W T B S W I B H B AEBD , fig. 3, pl. 5, be described from the centre C , whose semi-diameter let be 31", representing the earth's disk, and in it drawing DabE and cde BCA be the meridian in which the sun is, to which let be inclined the right line FHG C let be 240 such parts as BC is 31; and from C let fall the right line CH perpendicular upon FG . Then supposing the planet in H at 17h55m, or 5h55m in the morning, let the right line FHG CH , that is, 4 minutes. Let the right line KL be also equal to the difference of the apparent semi-diameters of the sun and Venus, or 15' 13½". Then the circle, described with the radius KL , and from any point within the small circle, representing the earth's disk as a centre, will meet the right line FG in the point denoting what o'clock it is at London, when Venus shall touch the sun's limb in an angle of internal contact, in that place of the earth's superficies that lies under the assumed point on the disk. And if a circle, described from the centre C and with the radius KL , meet FG in the points F and G , the right lines FH HG will be = 14' 41", which Venus will appear to pass over in 3h40m. Therefore

Volume 55 Number 3 September 2001 Edmond Halley and the magnetic field of the Earth (p. 473)
    by Sir Alan Cook FRS
Edmond Halley was interested in magnetism from his schooldays to the end of his life, and of all his notable contributions to natural knowledge, his survey of the magnetic field over the Atlantic Ocean surely stands out both for its achievement at the time and for its lasting value. His identification of the westerly drift and his speculations about its origin, his description of aurorae and his connection of them with the geomagnetic field, all demonstrate his physical insight, the grounds for which have only quite recently become apparent. How profound were Halley’s studies of geomagnetism has become much more evident in the 57 years that have passed since Sidney Chapman’s Halley lecture on the same topic; the advances in geophysics that have taken place in the intervening years are my justification for returning to the subject. Sir Edmond Halley
was quite a discoverer. Born in 1656, he computed in 1705 that a bright comet was periodic and would make another appearance in 1758. The comet appeared as predicted and is now known as Comet Halley . Unfortunately, Halley died in 1742 and never saw his prediction come true. In 1716 Halley proposed two types of diving bells that would enable people to explore the deep sea. Halley pioneered our understanding of trade winds, tides, cartography, naval navigation, mortality tables, and stellar proper motions. Halley (incorrectly) proposed that the Earth was made of concentric spheres the size of the inner planets each of which might contain life. Perhaps Halley's greatest discovery, however, was that his contemporary Isaac Newton had discovered a powerful mathematical formulation of gravity.
