Dear Parents, It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner!  The students have been busy with so many things this month.  They have been working on projects and several plays which have been performed this week.  Great job!  Many classrooms and teachers have been involved with sponsoring or contributing to needed activities during this holiday season.  Some examples are: Mrs. Motzer’s Kindergarten class sponsored a “Hat and Mitten Tree” to donate to needy families Mrs. Hanby’s class and other students decorated over 2000 bags that will each hold a teddy bear, which are donated to children struggling with cancer Mrs. Huneck and Mrs. Alston’s classes worked to make Christmas trees that will be shared with the residents at the Eden Park Nursing Home The teachers and staff sponsored the Clothe a Child program at Tamarac, which provided assistance to 22 children Mrs. Alston’s 4

Joan Hamill Passes Away
USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA) announced today the passing of Joan Birnie Hamill, 84, from Wayne, Ill. on July 22, 2001. Hamill was a leading equestrian figure who served on the boards of the U.S. Pony Club, U.S. Equestrian Team and the Hooved Animal Humane Society. She founded the Wayne DuPage Hunt Pony Club in 1955 and shortly after its formation, she was elected to the USPC Board of Governors where she served until 1961 and again from 1964 - 74. Her work with the U.S. Pony Club was recognized in 1990 when she was awarded the USPC Founders Award for over 25 years involvement. The new USPC office building in the Kentucky Horse Park was named after Hamill who was also one of the first Pony Club examiners in the country. Mary Pierson, USPC Director of Communications commented, "She was the most marvelous lady and a wonderfully supportive person." The former Joan Birnie Smith was the granddaughter of Northern Trust Bank Founder, Byron Smith. She grew up in Chicago where she learned to ride as a schoolgirl in Lincoln Park. Her life evolved around horses and she was a keen fox-hunter who followed hounds in England, Ireland and France as well as the U.S. She specialized in eventing and also competed in long-distance rides - an interest that accompanied her role as honorary chairwoman with the Illinois Prairie Path, a 61-mile trail. Joan Hamill is survived by her husband, a son and two daughters. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 30th at 4 p.m. in the Little Home Church on Army Trail Road in Wayne, Ill.

LEWISTON, Maine The Bates College softball team ended their 2000 home season today with a pair of decisive victories over the visiting Johnson and Wales University Wildcats, 18-8 and 12-4. The Bobcats (14-8) saw every position in the batting order but the ninth position score at least two runs in the opener. Rookie pitcher Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) led the way, going 3-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBI. On the mound, she allowed just three runs (one earned) in 4.1 innings of work, re-entering the game in the third inning. Junior catcher Peg Ficks (Washington, Conn.), seeing her first action behind the plate after spending much of the season at DP, responded by going 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Whiting improved to 5-1 with the win. Johnson and Wales (5-27) hurler Laura Hutchinson (Jamestown, Pa.) also had a big day at the plate, going 2-3 with a double, a home run and four RBI. Bates jumped out to a quick lead in game two, sending 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and scoring six runs. The big blow was Whiting's first career home run, a three-run shot that caught a robust wind and carried over the left field fence. Bates took an 11-0 lead into the fourth inning, but Johnson and Wales used some big hits, including a home run by rookie pitcher Cynthia Halloran (Smithtown, N.Y.) to bring the lead below the eight-run rule. Christine Anketell - co-author StickyBill (Banana Splits)
Christine Anketell is a writer, actor and director. She has worked in the genres of Music Theatre, Opera, Puppetry and Young Peoples' Theatre. She has directed numerous productions including the stage version of The Hobbit, Charlotte's Web and The Secret Garden. StickyBill Stories is her first children's book. Deborah Baldassi - Biography to come
Dianne Bates - author of Wacky Tales (Banana Splits)
Di Bates has written more than seventy children's books, and has performed at hundreds of schools. As well as that, she works as costume director for her friend Clark Kent. Have pity on her. Those phone booths are a tight squeeze. Her most popular books have been the Grandma Cadbury and the Bushranger series, but The Last Refuge, a novel for 10-14 year olds, is in her opinion, the most important as it deals with the issue of domestic violence. For more information about Di visit her website: http://www.users.bigpond.com/billcondon/di.htm Janette Brazel - Author: A Slimy Secret and Pea Brain
Janette Brazel grew up in Canberra. While she was battling fog and frost she worked in 'fast food' restaurants, dreaming of the beach. There were too many politicians in Canberra and not enough sand, so she took off for the wild life of Sydney to learn about ears. Janette now lives with an assortment of children and animals, hoping one day to be organised. Weird stories keep popping into her head so organisation will have to wait. Pea Brain is her second mystery novel. It is bizarre, like her first, A Slimy Secret.
