Brian Hartley 's early years were described by Ian Stewart, one of his doctoral students. Brian was born in Accrington. Holiday jobs included working in a pie factory and a cotton mill, where he had to jump into tubs of raw cotton to pack them down. At , he became one of the youngest people to be awarded a scholarship to King's College, Cambridge. Arriving as a -year-old he planned to study chemistry but after attending research lectures given by the mathematician Philip Hall he switched. Hartley's Ph.D. thesis was completed in 1964 under Hall 's supervision. He spent a year in Chicago, then a year in MIT before being appointed to the University of Warwick in 1966. Except for spending 1969 at ANU, he remained at Warwick until he was appointed to a chair in Manchester in 1977. His over 100 publications are almost all on group theory . His main topic was locally finite groups where he used his wide knowledge of finite groups in proving properties of infinite groups which were in a sense close to finite. He collaborated with many mathematicians and loved working out ideas with them on a blackboard. His only book Rings, modules and linear algebra

Brian Carr-Hartley The name Carr-Hartley will no doubt ring a bell, being an "old" Kenya name and one synonymous with animals and game trapping in East Africa. A very common remark on hearing the name is "I remember the Carr-Hartley's, they had a zoo at Rumuruti which we used to visit when we were kids." Yeah - that's 'em!! My late father, Thomas Carr-Hartley, was born and brought up in Kenya. My late mother, Daphne (nee Randall) was born in South Africa, however her family moved to Nanyuki when the British Government launched the Soldier Settler Scheme. As with most Kenya Settlers my parents did not have an easy life, with little money and the very basics for their homes, such as the versatile, indispensible parafin box which was put to good use in all sorts of ways, especially useful as pieces of furniture - excellent bookshelves and cupboards. As children the African's taught them to make their own 'nyamogas'. A free-standing, wire netting 'meat safe' was most successful for storing perishables - that is before they had the luxury of a 'fridge, plus much more. Yet those were the good 'old' days. After hunting and culling numerous elephant along with many other jobs, my father began capturing wild animals in East Africa in the early '30's and exported them to zoos and game parks worldwide for which he was famous. Way back in '36 I was born at Athi River, the second eldest of four brothers. My father worked for the Kenya Meat Commission at the time and was born at home in the KMC's compound. I was referred to as the 'Bully Beef Baby' along with Jack Esnouf, who came into the world at almost the same time!
