1972 - A Year in Diplomacy
by Hartley Patterson
1972 started with only four active European Diplomacy zines in operation. Albion had been first into the field in 1969; originally a Diplomacy zine, it had moved into board wargaming and adult games in general, Diplomacy games being relegated to a subzine Courier War Bulletin , after some nine months with Dave Berg as editor, had fallen into my hands in the summer of 1971. It struggled on as a two pager carrying only one game (1971BU, recently concluded), but by Jan 1972 a comeback was being staged with 1971DS and the renowned, 1971Uct, the Hannibal game. In Belgium, Michel Feron was in the process of reactivating Moeshoeshoe , which after running one game had ceased publication. Michel Liesnard's On Les Aura! with its Youngstown Variant game was soon to disappear, the game being transferred to Moeshoeshoe Looking back at WB 25, the January issue, I find the first signs of what was to come. " Ethil the Frog (Piggott & Haven) reportedly is about to start a game." For this was to be the boom year in British Diplomacy, the year when it all happened! As it turned out the only influence Will Haven had on Ethil was in suggesting the name, John Piggott deciding to publish on his own.

The Printing Revolution

Technopoly
Whether God is reduced to an image, a box, a book, or a machine, what all of these culturally-conditioned paradigms have in common is the desire to exert control over the One whom Christians proclaim is uncontrollable. These shifts in technology remind us that our experience of God is neither simply of the nature of the mind or of the feelings, but that worship and preaching, at their truest and best, engage all of the senses. When this happens, instead of closing down our understanding, they open up fresh possibilities for our encounter with a cruciform and incarnate God, whose gospel is life-changing in the midst of a control-oriented and experientially-obsessed culture.

Known Relatives: Osgood and Rachel Rathaway (parents, deceased)
Occupation: Social Activist
Past Group Membership: Rogues' Gallery
Base of Operations: Central and Keystone Cities
Hair: Reddish Blonde
Eyes: Blue
First Appearance: Flash (first series) #106
Born deaf, Hartley Rathaway was eventually cured of his disability by research funded by his multimillionaire father. He became obsessed with sound, but seemed to have ambition for nothing else in life, spoiled by his parents' lavish lifestyle. He started experimenting with the science of sonics in his early teens, and eventually perfected hypnotism through music. This life was too easy for Hartley, so he turned to crime to relieve his boredom. As the Pied Piper, he had many clashes with the second Flash After Barry Allen's death, the Piper abandoned crime in favor of socialism and a new role as a provider for the poor. He once joked that he was the only super-villain he could think of who was gay, making it ironic that he's one of the few rogues who have "gone straight." In fact, he is a good friend of Wally West , the current Flash, and his wife Linda , often helping Wally on cases with his scientific skills.

Reply-To: bryant@lanczos.ma.umist.ac.uk Dear Colleague, IN MEMORY OF BRIAN HARTLEY The London Mathematical Society has resolved to publish in the Journal a group of papers dedicated to the memory of the late Brian Hartley of the University of Manchester. The papers will be refereed in the usual way and must meet the Journal's normal criteria on standards, presentation, etc. The Editors will make available about 90 or 100 pages of one issue of the Journal. Since space will be very restricted, shorter papers will be particularly welcome. Clearly it will be most appropriate to have papers written by Brian's collaborators, research students and close colleagues. If it turns out to be necessary the Editors may have to be selective in determining which papers should appear in the special part-issue, but it may be that further dedicated papers can be published in other issues of the Journal, Proceedings or Bulletin. The precise date of publication of the special part-issue of the Journal cannot be determined at this stage, but it is likely to be some time in late 1997 or early 1998. If you (or other colleagues) wish to submit a paper for possible inclusion in the special part-issue you should submit your paper to the LMS in the usual way (see the inside back cover of a recent issue of the Journal, Proceedings or Bulletin) by 31st March 1996. Please also make it clear that you wish your paper to appear in the special part-issue of the Journal dedicated to Brian Hartley and send an additional copy of your paper to me so that I can help the Editors co-ordinate the progress of the papers. Please pass this information on, particularly to people who had close links with Brian. Yours sincerely, Roger Bryant. Prof. R. M.
