Heaviside-Lorentz Units Rationalizing Maxwell's Equations Maxwell's equations in Gaussian units are shown at the right. Gaussian units are based on the cgs system of mechanical units, and were long dominant for theoretical investigations. Absolute electrostatic units (esu) are used for electrical quantities, absolute electromagnetic units (emu) for magnetic quantities. Dieses Lehrstück über die Wege der Macht und der Kommunikation ist älter als das Internet. Nachrichtentechnisch sind Kabel in medias res und für die Informationsgesellschaft ebenso fundamental wie unsichtbar. Sie verschwinden in Kabelschächten, unter Fußböden, durch Funkstrecken und auf dem Meeresgrund. Alltäglich sichtbar erscheinen sie vorzugsweise als Salat, kurz in der symbolischen Form einer Mischung, die technischem Verstand zuwiderläuft. Im Ausdruck "Kabel-Salat" lässt sich eine Bruchstelle zwischen symbolischer und funktionaler Ordnung bemerken, die im Folgenden thematisch wird. Der Gedankenstrich zwischen "Kabel" und "Salat" verdeutlicht das Gemeinte: Er trennt und verbindet zugleich. Damit ist ein Paradox aller technischen Kommunikation ausgesprochen, das im Kabel zur beredten Tatsache wird. Es geht hier nicht um Sender und Empfänger, sondern um die sprachlose Mitte zwischen beiden, in der es bestenfalls Maschinensprachen gibt. Und vielleicht bedarf es einer besonderen psychischen Disposition, um sich ein Leben lang an diesem Nicht-Ort einzurichten. Er ist denn auch verbunden mit dem Namen eines einsamen Genies: Oliver Heaviside (1850-1925).
