The University of California lost a man of brilliant intellect, singular courage, and exceptional clear-sightedness with the death on February 3, 1943, of Earle Raymond Hedrick. As Professor of Mathematics from 1925 to 1937 and as Vice-President and Provost from 1937 to 1942, he exercised a vigorous and progressive influence on the development of the Los Angeles campus of the University. Through varied University-wide services, he attained and held a place of high esteem on all campuses. His unexpected passing is mourned by colleagues, students, alumni, and friends of the University everywhere. Dr. Hedrick was born in Union City, Indiana, in 1876. His early education was obtained in the Ann Arbor, Michigan, public schools and his undergraduate work was done at the University of Michigan. He received the Master of Arts degree at Harvard University and was there awarded a Parker Fellowship for European study. The Ph.D. degree was granted him by Göttingen University in February, 1901, after which he spent several months in further study at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. In 1901-1903 he was an instructor in the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University, and this was followed by twenty-one years as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Missouri. When he retired on June 30, 1942, he held the positions of Vice-President and Provost of the University.

Moorefield residents Edward and Tonya (Earle) Keplinger were the parents of the first baby born at Grant Memorial Hospital for 2002. Caelen Allen Keplinger arrived at 9 p.m., Jan. 2. He joined older brother and sister Colton and Carissa. Grandparents are Roger and Peggy Earle of Petersburg and William and Rosemary Keplinger of Moorefield. Despite a sluggish economy and problems for some national retailers, many Petersburg-area merchants reported better than expected business during the holiday season. Most said the 2001 season exceeded that of the previous year. A Pennsylvania company, U.S. Wind Force, was seeking a permit from the West Virginia Public Service Commission to construct a 166-turbine wind-powered electrical plant near Mount Storm on the Grant-Tucker county line. If approved, Grant County would become the home of the east coast's largest wind farm. In addition to generating 250 megawatts of electrical power, the project was expected to boost the local tax base by $800,000 and create 24 permanent jobs. Grant County's 2002 primary election got underway when Grant District resident Charlie Goldizen Jr. announced his resignation from the board of education. It was expected he would seek the Republican nomination for the seat held on the county commission by another Republican, Jane Kite Keeling. Keeling indicated she would run for re-election. Two other races to be decided in the May 14 primary were on the BOE.

Can War Be Abolished? Thomas Hobbes remarks that soverign nations are always at war with one another, either waging the cold war of intrigue and diplomacy or the hot war of steel and shell. 'War,' say Hobbes, 'consists not in battle only or in the act of fighting.' It exists wherever people cannot settle their differences without the recourse to violence in the last resort.
