MESOAMERICAN THEMES
AND CHACO CANYON
F. J. Mathien
A world-system model was also proposed to explain long-distance interaction among various cultures located between Mesoamerica and Chaco (Pailes and Whitecotton 1979). Mathien (1986) tested this model and concluded a down-the-line trade model better fit Chaco data; McGuire (1986) prefered prestige-goods exchange. These authors suggest various intermediary agents transferred goods and ideas among culture areas. Kelley (1986) has identified possible links among groups in West Mexico through the Chalchihuites, Loma San Gabriel, Mogollon, and Anasazi areas. Wilcox (1986) proposed long-term continuity of Uto-Aztecan speakers in northwestern Mexico and the Southwest; this model indicates the ease in which information would have travelled long distances. Riley (1986) showed how the Spanish were able to easily move along established routes linking the Valley of Mexico and the Southwest. If such continuity existed, Schroeder's (1981) proposal that the Hohokam were the last culture area within the Mesoamerican sphere, with Chaco external to that system, may be correct.

and studied mathematics under the latter's tutelage in the prison camp. Due to the chaos of the communist revolution and ensuing civil war, he was unable to return to Hungary until 1920. He then attended the University of Szeged where he studied with and with Frigyes Riesz, under whose direction he wrote his Ph. D. thesis in 1922. Afterwards he served as an assistant and Privatdozent at Szeged. In 1928 he was awarded a fellowship by the Rockefeller Foundation, which he spent working with in Munich and with Paul Koebe and Leon Lichtenstein in Leipzig. In 1929 he came to the U. S. as a visiting lecturer at Harvard and Rice University. Marshall Hall, Jr. Henry B. Mann , Erwin Kleinfeld and Herbert Ryser Ph. D. theses at Ohio State. Plateau's Jesse Douglas , were the first to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution (cf. ), a result which completed more than half a century's work on the classification of compact surfaces by many major mathematicians, including Riemann , and Weyl . In 1945 he was selected to give the American Mathematical Society Colloquium Lectures on his work on surface area (cf.

From the memory of Walter Edward "Ed" Stafford on John Rutter's life at Point Lookout, Maryland's POW camp. John Rutter said that he had survived by eating clams that he dug from the sand at Point Lookout. It is not absolutely clear but it is believed that John Rutter was with Jubal Early on the attack of Washington. There was some artillery but no infantry engagement in Washington, DC. There were two bothers of John Rutter in the 36th Va. Regiment who were either killed in action or who died at Point Lookout. I need to find out more about these ancestors.
