Heisenberg, Werner (1901-1976)
German physicist who in 1925 invented matrix mechanics, the first full version of quantum mechanics.
In 1927, Heisenberg derived the Uncertainty Principle , which states that
In 1932 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for this work.
He also developed operator methods for the solution of quantum mechanical problems.
On his death bed, Heisenberg is reported to have said, "When I meet God, I am going to ask him two questions: Why relativity? And why turbulence? I really believe he will have an answer for the first." However, this quote is also attributed to Horace Lamb

There he, and his fellow student Pauli , studied physics under Sommerfeld . After completing his undergraduate course he continued study for his doctorate presenting his doctoral dissertation in 1923 on turbulence in fluid streams. Heisenberg, as Pauli Born . In 1924 he went to the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen where he studied under Niels Bohr . A lecture series by Niels Bohr convinced him to work on quantum theory. Heisenberg later wrote:- I learned optimism from Sommerfeld In 1927 Heisenberg was appointed to a chair at the University of Leipzig. He was to hold this post until, in 1941, he was made director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics in Berlin. Heisenberg did important work in nuclear and particle physics, but his most important work was in quantum mechanics. Heisenberg invented matrix mechanics, the first version of quantum mechanics, in 1925. He did not invent these concepts as a matrix algebra, however, rather he focused attention on a set of quantised probability amplitudes. These amplitudes formed a non-commutative algebra. It was Max

Octavo., Contemporary blue buckram, with title, issue, and year in gilt on spine., Very good. With the pencil signature of Nobel Laureate John H. Van Vleck. All attempts to explain the helium spectra using the old quantum mechanics of Bohr and Sommerfeld had failed. Incorporating both Pauli's exclusion principle and spin into Schrödinger's two-electron wave function, Heisenberg was finally able to derive a good approximation to the emission spectrum of helium. This result marks the second great triumph of wave mechanics after Schrödinger;s treatment of hydrogen. In the course of this derivation, Heisenberg hit upon a new insight and established the principle of "exchange interaction"¯a force generated solely by the exchange of positions of two totally indistinguishable quantum particles¯which turned out to have much wider implications in both solid-state and nuclear physics. Van Vleck won the 1977 Nobel Prize in physics for his "fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems." HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Heisenberg, Werner (Karl) German physicist who developed quantum theory and formulated the uncertainty principle , which places absolute limits on the achievable accuracy of measurement. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1932 for his creation of quantum mechanics, work he carried out when only 24. Heisenberg was concerned not to try to picture what happens inside the atom but to find a mathematical system that explained it. His starting point was the spectral lines given by hydrogen, the simplest atom. Assisted by Max Born , Heisenberg presented his ideas in 1925 as a system called matrix mechanics . He obtained the frequencies of the lines in the hydrogen spectrum by mathematical treatment of values within matrices or arrays. His work was the first precise mathematical description of the workings of the atom and with it Heisenberg is regarded as founding quantum mechanics, which seeks to explain atomic structure in mathematical terms. Heisenberg also was able to predict from studies of the hydrogen spectrum that hydrogen exists in two allotropes ortho-hydrogen and para-hydrogen in which the two nuclei of the atoms in a hydrogen molecule spin in the same or opposite directions respectively. Who Was Werner Heisenberg ? As a result of the recently increased public debate about the person and character of our father, stimulated by Michael Frayn’s Tony award winning Broadway play "Copenhagen", we decided to present some pertinent material that highlights his integrity and humanity. It may help anyone who is interested arrive at a better understanding of our father’s thinking and actions, just as his own account in "Physics and Beyond" (Harper & Row 1971) and our mother’s "Inner Exile – Recollections of a life with Werner Heisenberg" (Birkhäuser 1984) have attempted. In making this other material available to an English speaking audience, we are hoping to reach the curious and the skeptical reader alike. This web-site will be continuously expanded after its launch in December 2000.
