Ma Lin Wins Men's Singles Title
Ma Lin and Qin Zhijian fought a classic penholder battle in the final match of the men's singles event. After 5 tough games, Ma emerged as the winner. In the semifinals held earlier in the day, Ma beat Kong Linghui 3-0, while Qin surprisingly defeated heavy favorite Wang Liqin 3-2. Wang Liqin beat Kong Linghui 2-0 to win the bronze medal.
Wang Nan/Zhang Rui Wins Women's Doubles
The Liaoning pair of Wang Nan and Zhang Rui won a tough 5-game battle (18, -16, 15, -20, 14) against Hebei's Bai Yang/Niu Jianfeng.The two pairs were close in ability. In Super League play, Bai/Niu had won twice over Wang/Zhang, but the scores were very close. This time Wang and Zhang prevailed. In the deciding 5th, the two Hebei players appeared to tighten up, and 17-year old Bai Yang made repeated errors on her forehand loops; those were the shots she executed with high percentages earlier in the match. Jiangsu's Li Ju/Zhang Yingying beat Henan's Zhang Hui/Tie Yana to pick up the bronze medal.

The phylogeny of the order Dipsacales s.l. is still problematic. Prior molecular studies based on rbc L and ndh F genes discussed the phylogeny of Dipsacales s.l., but because of limited sampling the problems could not be resolved contently. In our research, the strategies of dense sampling and combined DNA sequence analysis ( trn L F region and ndh F gene) are carried out within Dipsacales s.l. to elucidate the delimitation of families and the relationships among them. Sequence data for the trn L-F region of 26 taxa (25 ingroups and 1 outgroup) and ndh F gene of 28 taxa (25 ingroups and 3 outgroups) were used in the phylogenetic analyses. Parsimony analysis for the combined data sets for both genes resulted in only one most parsimonious tree. The results clearly demonstrate Triplostegia is extremely close to Dipsacaceae;

¡¡ The School of Science has a long and brilliant history. It was established in 1929. The first president was renowned physicist Ye Qisun, one of the founders of modern science education in China. Since it opened, it has produced a number of outstanding scholars. By the end of 1940, the department of Physics alone had produced many academicians for the Chinese Academy of Science, including Wang Jinchang, Zhou Tongqing, Gong Zutong, Zhao Jiuzhang, Fu Chengyi, Wang Zhuxi, Weng Wenbo, Zhang Zongsui, Qian Weichang, Peng Huanwu, Qian Sanqiang, He Zehui, Wang Daheng, Yu Zhongzheng, Ge Tingsui, Qin Xinling, Lin Jiaqiao, Zhang Enqiu, Hu Ning, Chen Fangyun, Li Zhengwu, and Lu Xueshan.

Romanisation of Chinese
Culture Language There are two main systems in use for romanising Chinese. Some Western sinologists still prefer the older Wade-Giles system, whereas the pinyin system is used in China itself. You are likely to come across both systems in your reading, although pinyin is displacing Wade-Giles. The aim of this page is to help you convert from one system to another easily and to give guidance on the pronunciation. You should also be aware that a few place names (such as Peking and Canton) do not conform to either system! See Also Learning Chinese Firstly, let's compare the spelling of the Wade Giles and pinyin systems. Initials Finals Pinyin : Wade-Giles Pinyin : Wade-Giles b : p -e : -eh c : ts' or tz' -i : -i or -u ch : ch' -ian : -ien d : t -ong : -un g : k -ou : -u j : ch -ue : -ueh k : k' -ui : -uei p : p' -no : -o q : ch' s : ss or sz t : t' x : hs z : ts or tz zh : ch Examples Zhou : Chou Qin : Ch'in Mao Zedong : Mao Tse-tung Deng Xiaoping : Teng Hsiao-ping [Note that the first part of a Chinese personal name is usually the surname: hence Jiang Zemin is Mr Jiang, not Mr Zemin. The pinyin system does not employ hyphen between syllables.] It is particularly useful to know the different romanisation for the names of people and places. Those I've listed below are all helpful for the national curriculum history units on China. A =B means B is the pinyin form of A e.g. T'ang =Tang Brackets [ ] indicate the approximate English phonetic pronunciation.

Chinese Earthquakes: Heavenly Patterns and Earthly Tremors - Thoughts on the Chinese Seismograph in Te Papa
Duncan Campbell
Perhaps it is true of all knowledge: when it is placed in the hands of a craftsman after a long and devious journey from a far country, its patina of mystery is soon scraped away to reveal an object of a more sedate hue.
James Cowan, A Mapmaker's Dream: The Meditations of Fra Mauro, Cartographer to the Court of Venice (1997) With the usual flotsam and jetsam of official cultural exchange between nations, the rule seems to be that it is the lightest products of the one culture that travel furthest across the oceans before beaching themselves upon distant shores. By contrast, the Chinese seismograph that now stands in Te Papa (Our Place), the newly opened Museum of New Zealand, is decidedly heavy. The seismograph is part of the Awesome Forces exhibition and gift of the city of Peking to the people of New Zealand. Although it is only a half-sized replica of the original, it weighs nonetheless a full 600kg. It bears also, I would suggest, an additional freight of traditional meaning that we should not ignore if we are to bring to the increasingly important political and economic relationship between New Zealand and China a cultural and intellectual dimension as well.

A Grand Historical Gathering for the New Century
The Thirteenth National Congress of Chinese Trade Unions was solemnly convened in Beijing in October 1998. It is a grand historical meeting for steering the socialist trade union work with Chinese characteristics towards the next century and, therefore, should be always remembered by the Chinese trade unionists.
A Happy Gathering
In the golden autumn of Beijing, the sunshine was bright and flowers were in full blossom. The 13th National Congress of Chinese Trade Unions met solemnly in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on October 19, 1998.
Present at the meeting were 1,652 delegates from 37 delegations. They were elected by secret ballot from among the 10-percent-more-than-required candidates at the congresses of trade unions in the electoral units. Among them, 83.4 percent were trade unionists and workers; 28.9 percent, females; 81.2 percent, delegates with records of formal schooling in institutions of higher education; and 83 percent, aged 55 or below. Participants also included 230-odd specially invited delegates and observers as well as the guests of the trade union organizations from China's Hong Kong SAR and Macao.
State President Jiang Zemin, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC Li Peng, Premier of the State Council Zhu Rongji, CPPCC Chairman Li Ruihuan, Vice-President Hu Jintao and Vice-Premier Li Lanqing attended the opening ceremony of the Congress. ACFTU Chairman Wei Jianxing presided over the Congress.
