Highlights of Chinese Culture and History Toads Frolicking with Dragons During the Eastern Han Dynasty, earthquakes were frequent in China. Sometimes there was one each year, sometimes there might even be two, wreaking great havoc on the country. Whenever a big earthquake occurred, it would take a heavy toll of human and animal lives and destroy numerous houses, inflicting heavy losses on the people. The feudal rulers of those days attributed the disasters to the fury of gods and demons who had taken offence. In pacifying them, they spread superstitious beliefs. At that time, there was a man of science named Zhang Heng who was not only a fine writer but also well versed in astronomy, calendar making and mathematics. To him we owe many scientific propositions, and the first apparatus in the world for observing astronomical phenomena, the "Celestial Globe." Refusing to accept superstitious explanations of the earthquake, Zhang made careful observations and recorded the symptoms of disasters in an attempt to diagnose the causes of earthquake by scientific means. And he made up his mind to make a device with which to forecast earthquakes so that he could refute superstitious nonsense with scientific findings. Thanks to his painstaking research and repeated experiments, Zhang Heng eventually succeeded in A.D. 132 in the invention of a seismograph with which to determine the direction of an impending earthquake. He called this Di Dong Yi (Earth Motion Instrument).

Mt. Heng

Mt. Heng is also called Chang Mountain and is located in Northern Shanxi Province and Northwest Hebei province. It is the Northern Marchmount of the Five Sacred Mountains. The Xuanyu Peak, the highest peak, is 2017 meters above sea level. In Daoism, Mt. Heng is the fifth grotto heaven among the thirty-six grotto heavens. It is called the General Mysterious Grotto Heaven. It is hard to give a detailed introduction to Mt.Heng, as there aren't many materials concerning its history. Tradition has it that Mao Yin stayed on Mt. Heng for cultivation in the Han Dynasty. Zhang Guo (Old Master Zhang Guo, one of the eight immortals), an eminent Daoist priest of the Tang Dynasty, retired here for some time. There is Guolao Range. In Song and Yuan times, Du Zhimiao, Sun Daowei, Zhao Daoxiang and Peng Zhengzhong came to Mt. Heng. Daoism declined after the Ming and Qing dynasties.

During emperor Shun's reign in the Eastern Han dynasty (AD 126-144), the "Mighty Commonwealth of the Orthodox Oneness' which was popularly called the "Five Pecks of Rice Tradition' was founded in ancient Sichuan by Zhang Ling, who had originally come from ancient Shandong. According to historical books such as the Biography of Zhang Lu in the Records of the Three Kingdoms , and the Biography of Liu Yan in the History of the Later Han , Zhang Ling came to Sichuan during Emperor Shun's reign and started to study Dao on Mt. Heming, which is located in Dayi county, Sichuan Province. He wrote Talismanic Books there and spread Daoism among the local people. Because each follower was supposed to offer him five pecks of rice, the government called them "Rice Robbers".

ASTRONOMY AND COSMOLOGY I
A reference to Aristotle is essential in a history of science, though impossible in a few sentences without being banal. This greatest of all Greek philosophers, who flourished in the 4th century BC, exerted an all-encompassing influence on the development of western thought. He introduced the systematic study of logic which he applied to his teachings. In his biological writings he presented a classification system of animals that was not fully replaced until the time of Linnaeus . All branches of knowledge were classified: physics, methaphysics, rhetoric, poetics. His picture of a perfect, unchanging, spherical universe centered on the earth placed a long-lasting damper on western understanding of the workings of the physical world, particularly the motions of the stars and planets. To the four supposed elements making up the universe, earth, water, air, and fire, he added a fifth, invisible element, the ether. This ether, made necessary because "nature abhorrs a vacuum", was an inpalpable fixture for over 2000 years until its existence was disproved by the Michelson-Morley experiment. His teachings, lost to western Europe during the dark ages, were reintroduced after contacts with the Arab world increased. The Scholastics reconciled Christian dogma with Aristotle's ideas, which virtually became dogma in secular learning. This discouraged independent scientific observation, inquiry, and experiment, even though Aristotle himself had been an interested observer of the natural world.

The Three Wise Men
Denise Kaisler kaisler@astro.ucla.edu You know, the more I travel, the easier it is to see how ethnocentric our history books really are. Take ancient astronomy for example. If you ask someone to list some famous astronomers of yore, you'll probably hear names like Aristarchus, Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Kepler. It's right and good that these names stick in our memories. They were brilliant men and deserve recognition. Yet there are many other astronomers who are not commonly known, merely because they didn't live in the culture that gave rise to ours. A case in point is that of China. This nation has had a long history of astronomical successes. For example, in 1054 A.D., astronomers in the Middle Kingdom recorded the nova that gave rise to the Crab Nebula. They noted the brightness of this "new star" and how it glittered for several months before fading from view. Yet the European record does not mention this astronomical event at all. Chinese astronomical records also indicate that their observers were making remarkable discoveries long before their European counterparts ever drew breath. These ancient sages are known to have calculated the period of Halley's comet a full millennium before Halley himself saw the pattern, in a time when the gears of European science were slowed by religious persecution and the fall of Rome.

Wu Bin's Letter to Anthony Goh of 10/22/01 The following is what I believe to be the best translation of Wu Bin's letter dated 10/22 originally posted on sinowushu.com ( Click here to view the original Chinese text ). It is in response to a letter attacking Wu Bin put on a website by one of Anthony Goh's students in the name of an organization known as the International Coalition for the Betterment Of Wushu Click here for the original Chinese letter, or click here for the English version (although I should note that the translation is missing a lot). Its attacks closely mirror those made in a letter by Anthony Goh to the International Wushu Federation in May of 2001 In the translation below, I've added comments in brackets in some places to clarify certain phrases, etc. Thanks to Eugene and 'WushuDragon.'
