His mother was Madeleine Lallemand, the daughter of a highly successful merchant. His father became a clothing merchant, after having "dull" jobs as an engineer and working in the salt industry. He had four brothers and two sisters, and was the second youngest. Charles was born with a deformed leg. This deformity affected his life greatly. Without the deformed leg, he would have gone to fight in the war that was going on when he reached adulthood. When Charles was six years old, the Hermite family moved to Nancy, France. There were two reasons for this: first, to encourage more business to the clothing store and second, to promote Charles's education. In 1842, Charles passed the entrance exam to the Ecole Polytechnique. However, he did poorly on the exams. He only was the 68th best. Also, he was kicked out a year later when they realized he wouldn't ever be able to fight in the war, due to his deformity. In 1848, Charles married Louise Bertrand. She was the sister of one of Charles's peers

Page d'accueil Le petit Charlot, c'est moi ! Mathématicien, je suis né à Dieuze le 24 décembre 1822 et je meurs à Paris en 1901. J'entre à l'école Polytechnique en 1842. Répétiteur d'analyse en 1848, je devins professeur en 1869 ainsi que professeur d'algèbre supérieur à la Faculté des Sciences. En 1856, je suis nommé membre de l'Académie des Sciences. Ayant fait une découverte capitale relative aux fonctions doublement périodiques, je m'intéresse surtout à la théorie des fonctions elliptiques et des fonctions abéliennes, introduisant dans ces divers domaines des méthodes originales. La découverte la plus célèbre que l'on m'attribue est la démonstration de la transcendance du nombre.

Recebeu contudo os encorajamentos de Liouville e no fim, cortesmente, completou uma parte importante da obra desse último. O trabalho envolvia o conceito de números algébricos, ou seja, números que podem ser­vir para resolver equações polinomiais do tipo x + x + x + Foi muito simples de­monstrar que qualquer número racional e um grande número de expressões irracionais tais como e podiam servir como solu­ção para algumas dessas equações. A questão era saber se existiam números irracionais que não poderiam servir como solução para tais equações. Sua existência não era posta em dúvida pelos matemáticos mas prová-lo era outra coisa.
