Serendipity is an amazing thing. Then again, it's quite possible that nothing in this universe is totally random. On March 16th, as I sat at my computer to write my next column, I thought it might be nice to intersperse a little history with the usual hard-science I write about. I wanted especially to write about a woman in astronomy, since there have been so many amazing women in this field that seldom get mentioned. One of the true greats was Caroline Herschel, sister to the legendary Sir William Herschel. Sir William is the one credited with the discovery of the planet Uranus and the first detection of invisible forms of light (among many other discoveries), but I imagine even he would admit he got a lot of help from his sister. A lot of help. Anyway, I had just started to look up information about Caroline that day, when I found out that very Thursday was her birthday. She was born on March 16th, 1750.

    Sir William Herschel (1738-1822)
This image was taken from the Web site of the Royal Observatory Greenwich , which is a part of the National Maritime Museum. No history of astronomy would be complete without an account of the contributions made by William Herschel (Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel) and his sister Caroline. William Herschel was born in 1738 in Hanover, Germany. William left Germany in 1757 and took up residence in Bath, England, where he made his living as a musician and music teacher. As a composer, William was fairly well accomplished; listed among his works are 24 symphonies, 7 violin concertos, 2 organ concertos, along with other compositions.
The Discovery of Uranus Increasingly, William’s interests turned to astronomy. The first entry made in William’s astronomical journal was in 1766, and on March 13, 1781, William made his historic discovery of the planet Uranus. Contrary to popular belief, the discovery of Uranus was far from accidental. In fact, William had been observing Uranus as, what he believed it to be at the time, a comet for many weeks. William proposed naming the new planet “Georgium Sidus” (George’s star) after King George III, of American Revolution fame, but it was named, instead, “Uranus”. As a result of his discovery and his flattering gesture toward the king, William was knighted and made court astronomer by King George. Along with his discovery of Uranus, William is also attributed with the discovery of two of the moons of Uranus as well as two of the moons of Saturn.

    • Hale, George E. (1868-1938) - discovered the magnetic properties of sunspots in 1908. He also founded the observatory at Mt. Wilson. Halley, Edmond (1656-1742) - the second Astronomer Royal of England. He attempted to measure the Earth/Sun distance using the transit of Venus. He also correctly predicted the return of the comet that bears his name. Hell, Abbe Maximillian (1720-1792) - a Jesuit priest who became the director of the Vienna Observatory in 1755. For 36 years he published yearly epheremides and in 1761 he observed the transit of Venus. Later he was falsely accused of adjusting his measurements of the transits in order to match other observations. Henderson, Thomas (1798-1844) - the second director of the Royal Cape Observatory and later the first Astronomer Royal of Scotland. Two months after Bessel published the parallax of the star 61 Cygni, Henderson announced he had found the parallax of the star Alpha Centauri. Herschel, Caroline

    Astronomy: Post-Newtonian Astronomy
In the 1700's and 1800's, science (or 'natural philosophy') continued to develop and grow. Growth in astronomy was assured by the continued application of the telescope, and better telescopes were always being manufactured. In telescope-making, "bigger" is usually "better". Observatories were built. Observatoire de Paris 1671, Royal Observatory in Greenwich 1676, Royal Observatory of Berlin 1700. Private observatories were built by William Herschel (1780) and the Earl of Rosse (1825). The Imperial Observatory of Russia was built in 1839, and in the United States, Lick Observatory (1888) and Yerkes Observatory (1897), both funded by private donors.
    • Giovanni Cassini (Obs. Paris) discovered 4 satellites of Saturn and measured the rotation periods of Mars (24h, 40m) and Jupiter (9h, 56m). He correctly deduced that the rings of Saturn were composed of numerous "moonlets". Cassini triangulated the distance of Mars by sending a collaborator (Jean Richer) to French Guiana and using the distance between them as a baseline. Both observers simultaneously measured the exact position of Mars against the background of distant stars and this gave them the distance of Mars, in miles , not astronomical units. The solar system turned out to be staggeringly large. The sun was not 20 times further away than the moon (Aristarchus) nor 60 times further away than the moon (Kepler) but a staggering 400 times further away.

William and Caroline Herschel in Bath, England Royal Crescent Sunrise from Parade Park Roman Globe ca. 150 A.D. The area now occupied by the city of Bath has been known from prehistoric times for its natural hot springs. These were believed to have curative properties and were considered sacred by the ancient Celtic tribes. When the Romans conquered Britain in the first century A.D. they established an elaborate bath and spa complex at the site. Many Roman ruins remain, the most extensive in Britain. After the fall of Rome the building complex fell into disarray, although the springs continued to attract people seeking cures for various physical ailments throughout the Middle Ages. At the end of the eighteenth century, the springs were "discovered" by the English upper class, and a handsome city designed around the then current ideas of neo-classical (or Georgian ) architecture came into being. This is largely the city that we see today, and it is the city that William and Caroline Herschel set up residence in 1766. Herschel's Home

    Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel
Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel, better known as Sir William Herschel, was born in Hanover, Germany on November 15, 1738. Music was an important part of his upbringing, this became evident when he became a bandboy with the Hanoverian Guards. Later on he was either inducted or a volunteer in the military where he served only briefly. Due to his delicate health he discovered he was unsuited for army life and his father helped him to leave Germany for England in 1757 where he took up residence. He was later reunited with his brother, Alexander, and his sister Caroline who joined him in England. On March 13, 1781, while scanning the skies with a 7-inch reflecting telescope, he observed an unusual object; it presented an extended disk-like shape. Herschel thought he had discovered a comet. He continued his observations, and calculations for months, discovering the orbit lay well beyond the orbit of Saturn and was fairly circular. Herschel's "Comet" was in fact a planet. Different names were suggested, including his own name, "Herschel". He, however, wanted to call the new planet "Georgium Sidus," after his new patron, George Ill. This name, however, did not find favor with the astronomical community. It was eventually named Uranus after the mythological god of the skies.
