John Herschel (1792-1871)
John Frederick William Herschel was born on 7 March 1792 in Slough, England, the only offspring of the already famous astronomer William Herschel . Raised by his father and aunt Caroline (also an astronomer), he studied mathematics at St John's College in Cambridge, from which he graduated in 1816. He then launched into his astronomical career, focusing at first on the study of double stars. In January 1834, after five years of preparation Herschel set out with his family to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, to engage in the mammoth task of mapping and cataloguing the then largely uncharted Southern celestial hemisphere. It is during this stay at the Cape that Herschel engaged, in 1837-1838, in his pioneering measurements of the solar energy output. Upon his return to England in May 1838, Herschel became increasingly interested in the newly founded art of photography (a name coined by Herschel himself, in fact), and became a strong and vocal proponent for its use in astronomy. In 1849 he published his Outlines of Astronomy , which became a standard textbook for decades to follow. His

Home Staff Research Teaching ... Links John Herschel (1792-1871) John Herschel (son of the astronomer William Herschel who discovered Uranus) studied at Cambridge, and thereafter devoted his life to the pursuit of science. His scientific achievements included studies of double refraction in crystals, experiments in photography and photo-chemistry, a method of computing binary-star orbits, and other astronomical observations. He spent the period 1834-8 at the Cape of Good Hope, where he successfully extended his father's survey of double stars and nebulae to the Southern skies. Herschel published A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy in 1830. His analysis of the role of hypothesis, theory and experiment in science was acknowledged to be influential by Whewell, Mill and Darwin, among others. He drew a vital distinction between the way things are discovered (context of discovery) and the way they are investigated and established (context of justification). He claimed that the manner in which a theory was arrived at, was irrelevant to its acceptibility as a scientfic theory. One might arrive at a theory by means of a dream or sudden flash of inspiration, as well as by careful and painstaking examination of a phenomenon. It made no difference. However, in judging a theory's adequacy, observations were the key element. Use "Back" or "Refresh" keys or return to

Below is a listing of the various more and less common catalogs of deep sky objects, together with abbrevations and a short description. This list is of course far from being comprehensive. If you have any comments or additions, please email me We have some of these catalogs available here at SEDS. Moreover, Mikkel Steine of Norway has made available a number of these catalogs online. I've linked these lists when appropriate. Other compilations are acknowledged where they are linked. Besides these catalogs which are often used to designate objects, there are many observing lists and catalogs suitable for work-through and as databases, as well as historic deepsky catalogs , which we do not include here.

Caroline Herschel was the daughter of Isaac Herschel and Anna Ilse Moritzen. She was sister of William Herschel and the aunt of John Herschel . Caroline's father Isaac was an oboist in the Hanovarian Foot Guards and rose to become the bandmaster. Although a man with no formal education, he tried hard to give his four sons and two daughters a good education. His interests in music, philosophy and astronomy led to lively conversations in their home but Caroline's mother disapproved of learning in general and although she reluctantly accepted that her four sons should have some education, she strongly opposed her daughters doing anything other than the household chores. Caroline Herschel's four brothers were all brought up to be musicians while Caroline showed an enthusiasm for knowledge which her father tried to satisfy despite all her mother's efforts to ensure that she did nothing but household tasks. Caroline recalled that her father took her [4]:- ... on a clear frosty night into the street, to make me acquainted with several of the beautiful constellations, after we had been gazing at a comet which was then visible.

    Herschel, William (1738-1822)

English astronomer who, after constructing the largest reflecting telescope of his era, discovered Uranus, Oberon, and Titania in 1781. He was a patient, careful observer, who visually scanned the entire northern sky. His catalog of extended objects was compiled into the New General Catalog of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars by Dreyer . He constructed a map of the galaxy based of the observed distribution of stars Herschel discovered infrared radiation by noticing that the region beyond the red end of the spectrum would cause a thermometer to indicated an elevated temperature This amounted to a conversion from light into heat In 1820, he showed that right- and left-handed quartz caused rotation of the plane of polarization of light in opposite directions.
