Sir John Herschel of 1
Born 1792, Died 1871
Scientist, Draftsman, Photographer
British
Sir John Herschel was a scientist and astronomer like his father, Sir William Herschel. In 1809 he entered the University of Cambridge; in 1812 he submitted his first mathematical paper to the Royal Society, of which he was elected a fellow the following year. An accomplished chemist, Herschel discovered the action of hyposulfite of soda on otherwise insoluble silver salts in 1819, which led to the use of "hypo" as a fixing agent in photography. In 1839, independently of William Henry Fox Talbot, Herschel also invented a photographic process using sensitized paper. It was Herschel who coined the use of the terms photography positive , and negative to refer to photographic images. In 1820 Herschel became a founding member of the Royal Astronomical Society. From 1833 until 1838, his astronomical investigations brought him and his family to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, where he met Julia Margaret Cameron, who became a lifelong friend. In 1850 Herschel was appointed master of the Mint, but he resigned six years later due to poor health. His remaining years were spent working on his catalogs of double stars and of nebulae and star clusters.

Biographical Data: JOHN HERSCHEL GLENN, JR.
Note: This biography is dated June 1978 and represents John Glenn's last official NASA biography prior to his approval for his shuttle flight in 1998. His updated NASA biography is also available online. John H. Glenn, Jr., Colonel, USMC (Ret.), was born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio. As a child, he moved with his parents to New Concord, Ohio. Glenn was assigned to the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in April 1959 after his selection as a Project Mercury Astronaut. Glenn resigned from the Manned Spacecraft Center on January 16, 1964. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel in October 1964 and retired from the Marine Corps on January 1, 1965. He was business executive from 1965 until his election to the United States Senate in November 1974, where he now serves. Glenn is 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, weighs 168 pounds and has green eyes and red hair. His wife is the former Anna Margaret Castor, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H. W. Castor of New Concord. The Glenns have two children: John David, born December 13, 1945; and Carolyn Ann, born March 19, 1947. Glenn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Glenn of New Concord, are deceased. On February 20, 1962, Glenn piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 "Friendship 7" spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the United States. Launched from Cape Canaveral (recently re-named Cape Kennedy), Florida, he completed a successful threeorbit mission around the earth, reaching a maximum altitude (apogee) of approximately 16Z statute miles and an orbital velocity of approximately 17,500 miles per hour. Glenn's "Friendship 7" Mercury spacecraft landed in an area in the Atlantic approximately 800 miles southeast of Cape Kennedy in the vicinity of Grand Turk Island. He landed 41 miles west and 19 miles north of the planned impact point. The time of the flight from launch to impact was 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds. Prior to his flight, Glenn had served as backup pilot for Astronauts Shepard and Grissom.

John H. Glenn, Jr.
by Tara Gray John Herschel Glenn, Jr., Colonel USMC (Ret.), was born on July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio. He grew up in New Concord, Ohio, where he attended school and graduated from New Concord High School. He then enrolled in New Concord's Muskingum College where he received a B.S. in engineering. He had already learned to fly at the small New Philadelphia airfield through a government civilian pilot training program to let young men start learning how to fly while they were completing their education. He took the Army Air Corps physical examination, passed it and was sworn in. However, when no orders came he took the Navy's physical, which he also passed and was sworn into the Naval Aviation Cadet Program. His orders came right away and he left for training. He went to the University of Iowa for preflight training and then continued on to Olathe, Kansas, for primary training. He finished up with advanced training in Corpus Christi, Texas. While at Corpus Christi, he learned that he could volunteer for duty in the Marine Corps and receive a commission in the Marines rather than the Navy. He won his wings and lieutenant's bars in 1943, and on April 6 of that year, he married the former Anna Margaret Castor, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H.W. Castor of New Concord.

Click here for audio of Episode 395. Today, we meet a modest giant. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. W illiam Herschel, the astronomer who discovered Uranus, was 50 when he married. He was 54 when his only son, John, was born in 1792. John was raised by a cheerful mother, a famous father, and a maiden aunt, Caroline. Caroline was also an astronomer of first rank. It was she who discovered the nebulae in Cetus and Andromeda. For 56 years she and John were joined by a great bond of affection. The household was more than a home. It was also an observatory. The grounds housed the largest reflector telescope in the world. It was 40 feet long with a 48-inch mirror. You might say John was born with a silver telescope in his eye. At first, John studied mathematics at Cambridge. Charles Babbage , who later invented the programmable computer, was John's age and a close friend at Cambridge. Together they founded the movement that brought Leibniz's calculus into English use.

The campaign was a success: the translation of Lacroix was soon adopted as a university textbook, and as early as 1817 Cambridge Tripos papers contained questions using the continental notation advocated by Herschel and his friends. Encyclopaedia Metropolitana which covered all aspects of the subject, including both wave and corpuscular theories. Herschel also wrote similar articles on Physical Astronomy and on Sound for the same encyclopaedia. Cabinet Cyclopaedia This was later published as a volume in its own right. Outlines of Astronomy This was an enlargement of a second volume that Herschel wrote for the Cabinet Cyclopaedia Despite the technical and mathematical treatment of many of its topics, this was an enormous success, running to twelve editions in England, and more abroad, where it was translated into many European languages as well as Arabic and Chinese. In the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia published in 1830, Herschel wrote articles on the history of mathematics and on the isoperimetric problem.

Sir John Herschel
"After a few moments' silent thought, Sir John diffidently inquired whether it would not be possible to effect a transfusion of artificial light through the focal object of vision! Sir David, somewhat startled at the originality of the idea, paused awhile, and then hesitatingly referred to the refrangibility of rays, and the angle of incidence. Sir John, grown more confident, adduced the example of the Newtonian Reflector, in which the refrangibility was corrected by the second speculum, and the angle of incidence restored by the third. 'And,' continued he, 'why cannot the illuminated microscope, say the hydro-oxygen, be applied to render distinct, and, if necessary, even to magnify the focal object?' Sir David sprung from his chair in an ecstacy of conviction, and leaping half-way to the ceiling, exclaimed, 'Thou art the man!'" from the New York Sun, Tuesday, August 25, 1835

Wirklich KLASSE!!!!
