Definitions Hilbert, David (1862 - 1943): German mathematician. Hilbert had hoped to justify the use, in calculus for example, of the notion of infinity by showing that a formal system governing its use could be shown to be consistent using only finitistic methods. This would have demonstrated that the notion could be regarded merely as a calculating device whose use was legitimate, in that it would never lead one astray, and justified in terms of economy of labour. David Hilbert, great mathematician
Hilbert was, with , the leading mathematician of his day. All quantum physicists need Hilbert space. Hilbert also contributed to other areas of theoretical physics, for example, by suggesting an action principle from which Einstein's equations of general relativity could be derived. Recent research into the question of whether Einstein saw the proofs of Hilbert's paper before modifying his equations of motion to include the term have been resolved. John Stachel (Boston University, Center of Einstein Studies) has copies of documents that show the printers proofs of Hilbert's article (published in March, 1916) were sent to Hilbert by the publishers on 6 Dec 1915, two weeks after Einstein had submitted his papers with the correct equations of GR. Moreover, the proofs differ substantially from the published version, and do not contain the equations of Einstein, though they do propose a covariant action principle. Title: Enhancing a UML Modelling Tool with Context-Based Constraints for Components
    Author: Martin Skinner
    Language: German (de)
    Abstract:

TRANSLATION OF AN ADDRESS GIVEN BY DAVID HILBERT IN KONIGSBERG, FALL 1930
    BACKGROUND

The following is a translation of an address given by David Hilbert at the meeting of the Society of German Scientists and Physicians in Konigsberg in fall 1930, on the occasion of presentation to Hilbert (upon his retirement) of an honorary citizenship of the town. Reidemeister and Szego made arrangements for Hilbert to repeat the last part of his speech over the local radio station; a record of this talk pronounced at the broadcasting studio exists and was recently acquired by Victor Katsnelson. He kindly supplied his colleague Victor Vinnikov with the transcript of Hilbert's address, which was then diligently translated to English by Amelia and Joe Ball.
For more details on Hilbert's address and surrounding circumstances, see Constance Reid's book "Hilbert", Chapter 22. For the German original of the address, please contact Victor Vinnikov
    ADDRESS BY DAVID HILBERT
The tool implementing the mediation between theory and practice, between thought and observation, is mathematics. Mathematics builds the connecting bridges and is constantly enhancing their capabilities. Therefore it happens that our entire contemporary culture, in so far as it rests on intellectual penetration and utilization of nature, finds its foundations in mathematics.
Already some time ago Galileo said "Only one who has learned the language and signs in which nature speaks to us can understand nature."

Int. Mathematiker-Kongreß in Paris.

    http://members.fortunecity.com/iewulib3/libkj/hilbert.htm
web hosting domain names email addresses related sites The Foundations of Mathematics by David Hilbert (1927) It is a great honour and at the same time a necessity for me to round out and develop my thoughts on the foundations of mathematics, which was expounded here one day five years ago and which since then have constantly kept me most actively occupied. With this new way of providing a foundation for mathematics, which we may appropriately call a proof theory, I pursue a significant goal, for I should like to eliminate once and for all the questions regarding the foundations of mathematics, in the form in which they are now posed, by turning every mathematical proposition into a formula that can be concretely exhibited and strictly derived, thus recasting mathematical definitions and inferences in such a way that they are unshakeable and yet provide an adequate picture of the whole science. I believe that I can attain this goal completely with my proof theory, even if a great deal of work must still be done before it is fully developed. I shall now present the fundamental idea of my proof theory.

David Hilbert and Paul Erdös Awards The World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions has created two international awards for mathematicians who have contributed to mathematics enrichment in their own countries or internationally. They are named after two mathematicians who have been among the most prominent in providing mathematical challenge in the twentieth century.
    David Hilbert International Award
The David Hilbert International Award was established to recognise contributions of mathematicians which have played a significant role in the development of mathematical challenges at the international level and which have been a stimulus for the enrichment of mathematics learning. Each recipient of the award is selected by the Executive and Advisory Committee of the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions on the recommendation of the WFNMC Awards Subcommittee.
    David Hilbert (1862-1943)
David Hilbert was one of the most outstanding mathematicians of the modern era. At the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris in 1900 he presented the now famous and inspirational 23 problems which he challenged twentieth century mathematicians to solve.
