Heisuke Hironaka attended Kyoto University. This university was founded in 1897 to train small numbers of selected students as academics. By the time Hironaka entered Kyoto University, after World War II, it had been integrated into a mass higher education system but had maintained its prestige. From Kyoto University Hironaka went to the United States where he continued his studies at Harvard. After completing his studies there, Hironaka was appointed to the staff at Harvard. In 1970 Hironaka had the distinction of being awarded a Fields Medal at the International Congress at Nice. This was for his work on algebraic varieties which we describe below. Among the many other honours he has received is the Order of Culture from Japan in 1975. Two algebraic varieties are said to be equivalent if there is a one-to-one correspondence between them with both the map and its inverse regular. Two varieties U and V are said to be birationally equivalent if they contain open sets U' and V' that are in biregular correspondence. Classical algebraic geometry studies properties of varieties which are invariant under birational transformations. Difficulties that arise as a result of the presence of singularities are avoided by using birational correspondences instead of biregular ones. The main problem in this area is to find a nonsingular algebraic variety U, that is birationally equivalent to an irreducible algebraic variety V, such that the mapping f: U

Talking Business March 2001
UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE
INTERVIEW BY NISHIMURA Kunio , LOOK JAPAN HOSEI University last year celebrated the 120th anniversary of its founding. Honoring its traditional ideals of "liberty and progress," the university has been working on reform for the future, promoting "Open Hosei 21," an educational program that encompasses globalization, a broad range of community exchange, and lifetime education. We asked Kiyonari Tadao, president and chairman of Hosei's Board of Trustees, about his vision for the universities of the new century. LOOK JAPAN: What's your view on the current status of higher education in Japan? KIYONARI Tadao KIYONARI TADAO : Japan's 18-year-old population has fallen by roughly 25% since the 1992 peak, and so university applicants have decreased that much over the past eight years. Because there has been little change in the number of students each school can admit, schools are getting easier to enter, allowing the average scholastic level of the students naturally to drift downward. Admitting this average decline in the students' abilities, the number of young people with a keen sense of mission is increasing in today's rapidly changing, problem-filled society. Over four years Hosei University has established four new undergraduate faculties for the twenty-first century, catering to the needs of the times. Coming into these faculties are serious students who are well aware of the problems and have a strong desire to learn. So the overall decline in students' scholastic ability does not mean that today's young people are all useless. On the contrary, the proportion of very promising youngsters is also on the rise.
