Hollerith, Herman (1860-1929)

Herman Hollerith sparked the computing revolution with a design based on a weaving loom. During the Industrial Revolution, mechanized Jacquard looms changed the mundane and labor-intensive task of weaving patterns into fabric by reading information punched into cards. The holes in the cards told the looms when to weave what colors into the fabric and therefore automated much of the process. An operator needed only feed a card into the contraption and let the machine do what it did best, repeat a standardized process.
During the 1880 census, humans weren’t so lucky. They were relegated to processing data by hand—masses of data. Dozens of statistics about a single person were collected during the census, from marital status to country of origin to gender. Census takers recorded each statistic, or feature, and brought all of the data back to the U.S. Census Bureau for processing. Furthermore, all those details had to be counted, compiled, and cross-tabulated for a full profile of the population. By the end of a survey, the government would....

Hollerith, Herman 1860-1929, American inventor, b. Buffalo, N.Y. After graduating from Columbia Univ. (B.S., 1879), he worked on the U.S. Census of 1880. Intrigued by the problem of tabulating vast amounts of data, he developed over the next several years a card that could be represent data through a series of punched holes and a number of machines for punching and tabulating the cards. In 1896 Hollerith founded the Tabulating Machine Company which, through mergers and acquisitions, grew into the International Business Machines Company. See Geoffrey Austrian, Herman Hollerith

Hollerith's Punched Cards a The first practical use of punched cards for data processing is credited to the American inventor Herman Hollerith , who decided to use Jacquard's punched cards to represent the data gathered for the American census of 1890, and to read and collate this data using an automatic machine. a Many references state that Hollerith originally made his punched cards the same size as the dollar bills of that era, because he realized that it would be convenient and economical to buy existing office furniture, such as desks and cabinets, that already contained receptacles to accommodate stacks of bills. Other sources consider this to be a popular fiction. Whatever the case, we do know that these cards were eventually standardized at 7 and 3/8 inches by 3 and 1/4 inches, and Hollerith's many patents permitted his company (which became International Business Machines (IBM) in 1924) to hold an effective monopoly on punched cards for many years.

    Herman Hollerith - Punch Cards
Modern data processing began with the inventions of American engineer, Herman Hollerith. In 1881 Hollerith began designing a machine to tabulate census data more efficiently than by traditional hand methods. The U.S. Census Bureau had taken eight years to complete the 1880 census, and it was feared that the 1890 census would take even longer. Hollerith invented and used a punched card device to help analyze the 1890 US census data. Hollerith's great breakthrough was his use of electricity to read, count, and sort punched cards whose holes represented data gathered by the census-takers. His machines were used for the 1890 census and accomplished in one year what would have taken nearly ten years of hand tabulating. In 1896 Hollerith founded the Tabulating Machine Company to sell his invention, the Company became part of IBM in 1924. Hollerith first got his idea for the punch-card tabulation machine from watching a train conductor punch tickets. For his tabulation machine he used the punchcard invented in the early 1800s, by a French silk weaver called Joseph-Marie Jacquard. Jacquard invented a way of automatically controlling the warp and weft threads on a silk loom by recording patterns of holes in a string of cards.

American inventor of a tabulating machine that was an important precursor of the electronic computer. Born: 29 Feb. 1860 in Buffalo, New York, USA
Died: 17 Nov 1929 in Washington D.C., USA Beginnings and Education
Herman Hollerith's parents immigrated, in 1848, to the United States from Germany fleeing political disturbances there. Hollerith was surely a bright child but struggled in his early schooling with difficulties learning spelling. There ensued a battle of will with his teacher resulting in young Herman avoiding school at all possible opportunities. Eventually, he was removed from school and received private tutoring at home from the family's Lutheran minister. His higher education was a series of outstanding successes. Entering at the City College of New York in 1875, Hollerith then studied advanced engineering at the Columbia School of Mines in 1879. Hollerith earned honors and a distinction in his final examinations and so impressed one of his instructors, Prof. W P Trowbridge, that he asked Hollerith to become his assistant at Columbia University. Born in 1860 in Buffalo, NY, Herman Hollerith was the creator of the Hollerith Electric Tabulating System, the ancestor to computers as we know them today. The system used cards with punched holes to tabulate data. Though first used in 1887 for calculating mortality statistics, Hollerith's punch card system became widely known when it was used to tabulate the U.S population during the 1890 census. Hollerith founded the Tabulating Machine Company in 1896. His punch card machine, now fitted with automatic card feeders, was used again in the 1900 census. But by 1910, the US Census Bureau decided to build their own machines because Hollerith was charging too much money for use of his machines. In 1911, Hollerith's Tabulating Machine Company merged with another machine manufacturer to form Computer Tabulating Recording Company. The new company struggled to gain market share for nearly ten years, and it wasn't until 1920 that it became a leader in the counting machine industry. Hollerith retired in 1921. In 1924, under the direction of Thomas Watson, Sr., the company was renamed International Business Machines Corporation (IBM).

In 1879 he got his masters at the University of Columbia School for mining and started to work for the cencus buro in Washington. He came at the right time to see hundreds of clercks wrestling to proces all data of the cencus from 1880 by hand. John Shaw Billings, a high official for the buro and Hollerith's future father in law, suggested to process all counting by punched cards, and Hollerith started to work through the 80's and developed a system just for that puirpose. It is un known whether Billings gotr the idea himself. From studying Jaquards loom or by watching the railway conductors punching tickets But he was satisfied with the idea that Hollerith followed up on the idea. By 1890 Hollerith perfected the system. In a census office speed contest, his statistical tabulator bested several rivals to win the 1890 census contract. And this forged a new link in the chain of computer history.
