A BIOGRAFI NIELS HENRIK ABEL Written by Maria Moksnes and Katrine Sandnes. Abel was born 5, August 1812 in Finnøy in Ryfylke. He moved with his family to Gjerstad in Aust - Agder, when he was two years old. Abel was second oldest out of 6 children. His father Søren Georg Abel had a drinking problem, and he died when Abel was only 18 years old. Also his mother Marie Sørensen was a alcoholic, and the children and she had big economical problems after the fathers death. Abel got a scolarship on the Katedralscool in Oslo, when he was 13 years old. Mathematic was his best subject from the start, but when he got Holmboe (*) as a new mathematical teacher big things started to happen. Holmboe became a great inpirationsourse to Abel, and he was well known for his interesting teaching. He also lent Abelbooks in higher mathematics, and guided him to work with works of well known mathematicians. In 1821 he started to study at the Universety in Oslo. He had economical problems, but got to live at the dorm "Regensen" for free. In 1823, Abel published his first important paper on definite integrals, which included the first solutions of an integral equation. He also produced another valuable work of the intergration of functions. The same year Abel had his first trip to Copenhagen. In Denmark he worked with the solution of the theorem of the elliptic functions. Abel also got to travel to Europe in 1825 -1827. In Berlin he met August Leopold Crelle. Crelle started to publish a mathematical paper, were Abel got 6 of his mathematical works published. When Abel got to Paris he presented his new "masterpiece" on elliptic functions and integrals which included Abels theorem, to the French Academy of Sciences.

The life of Abel is one of the most tragic in all of the sciences. Abel's Early Life On August 5, 1802 Niels Henrick Abel was born in Finnoy, Norway to a Lutheran minister. Shortly after he was born, Abel and his eight family members moved to Gjerstad, Norway. Abel was educated at home until the age of 13, which is when he was admitted to the Cathedral School in Oslo. At Oslo, his math was rather unimpressive, but when his teacher was dismissed for beating the pupils, Abel became good friends with his new instructor, Bernt Michael Holmboe. Holmboe was supportive of Abel because of Abel's ability in mathematics. Niels Henrik Abel: A short but influential life The only existing authentic portrait of Niels Henrik Abel Norway's best known mathematician, Niels Henrik Abel, died at the age of 26. Despite his short life, he contributed a great deal to his subject and his name is inextricably linked with the world of mathematics. At the age of 13, he moved from Gjerstad in southeast Norway to Christiania [presentday Oslo] and started at the Cathedral School. Excelling in mathematics, he scraped through in the other subjects, showing every sign of being fed up with school. Berlin and beyond Most important work mislaid He arrived in Paris in July 1826, but the stay there was a disappointment. France's most important mathematicians showed little or no interest in meeting this unknown Norwegian. Nevertheless, his time there proved very productive and he wrote a piece on algebraic integrals which was later to be recognised as his masterpiece. In order to be accepted and printed, it had to be assessed by mathematicians at the French Academy of Sciences. Abel waited the entire autumn, but his piece was mislaid. It was not printed until 15 years later, after considerable pressure from the Norwegian government. The person responsible for printing it then stole the manuscript, which remained lost until 1952 when it resurfaced in Florence! The New Year of 1827 saw Abel returning to Crelle in Berlin and then on to Norway in May. In addition to his mathematical work, he took home some continental habits. His friends and colleagues noticed that his clothes were more modern and that he had "learnt some manners".

Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829), Norwegian mathematician , was born at Findoe on the 25th of August 1802. In 1815 he entered the cathedral school at Christiania (as Oslo was then called), and three years later he gave proof of his mathematical genius by his brilliant solutions of the original problems proposed by Bernt Holmboe. About this time, his father, a poor Protestant minister, died, and the family was left in straitened circumstances; but a small pension from the state allowed Abel to enter Christiania University in 1821. His first notable work was a proof of the impossibility of solving the quintic equation by radicals. (See Abel-Ruffini theorem .) This investigation was first published in 1824 and in abstruse and difficult form, and afterwards (1826) more elaborately in the first volume of Crelle's Journal. Abel began to study university level mathematics texts and, within a year of Holmboe Solutions of some problems by means of definite integrals By this time Abel seems to have known something of Ruffini's work for he had studied Cauchy's work of 1815 while he was an undergraduate and in this paper there is a reference to Ruffini 's work. Abel's 1824 paper begins ([6]): - Geometers have occupied themselves a great deal with the general solution of algebraic equations and several among them have sought to prove the impossibility. But, if I am not mistaken, they have not succeeded up to the present. In Copenhagen Abel was given a letter of introduction to Crelle by one of the mathematicians there. Abel met Crelle in Berlin and the two became firm friends. Arnold (VEV Volk und Wissen 1983, 3. Auflage). Niels Henrik Abel stammte aus einer Familie von Landpastoren. Als, zweites Kind von sieben Kindern wurde er am 5. August 1802 auf der Insel Finnöy an der Südwestküste Norwegens geboren. Abel wurde anfangs vom Vater, einem schwierigen Charakter, unterrichtet. Schliesslich gelang es, Niels Abel im Alter von 13 Jahren zusammen mit seinem älteren Bruder an der schon seit dem Mittelalter bestehenden Domschule in Oslo unterzubringen. Sein Lehrer, Bernt Michael Holmboe, gab ihm Poisson, Gauss, Newton, Lalande, d'Alembert, Lagrange und andere mathematische Autoren von Rang zu lesen und schirmte den sehr sensiblen, körperlich schwächlichen und anfälligen Niels Henrik vor den schlimmsten Übergriffen der Lehrer und Mitschüler ab. Abel seinerseits machte sich in unglaublich kurzer Zeit die mathematischen Ergebnisse seiner Zeit zu eigen und fing bereits an, eigene Untersuchungen anzustellen. Er glaubte vorübergehend sogar, die seit Jahrhunderten vergeblich gesuchte Auflösung der allgemeinen algebraischen Gleichung fünften Grades in Radikalen gefunden zu haben; seine Lehrer und sogar die besten Mathematiker Norwegens vermochten nicht, über die Richtigkeit seiner Ansätze zu entscheiden. Diese öffentlich diskutierte Affäre trug Abel ein solches Ansehen und solche Empfehlungen ein, dass er 1821 an der Universität Oslo immatrikuliert werden konnte. Seine persönlichen Verhältnisse waren indes fast verzweifelt: Er war völlig mittellos, sein Elternhaus familiär zerrüttet und verschuldet, der Vater war am Scheitern seiner politischen und volksbildnerischen Reformpläne innerlich zerbrochen und schon 1820 verstorben, der ältere Bruder durch Krankheit erwerbsunfähig.
