HOPKINS, WILLIAM
(1873), The Scriptural Idea of Man (1883), and Teachings and Counsels (1884). Dr Hopkins took a lifelong interest in Christian missions, and from 1857 until his death was president of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (the American Congregational Mission Board). He died at Williamstown, on the 17th of June 1887. His son, HENRY HOPKINS (1837—1908), was also from 1903 till his death president of Williams College. See Franklin Carter’s Mark Hopkins (Boston, 1892), in the American Religious Leaders “ series, and Leverett W. Spring’s Mark Hopkins, Teacher (New York, 1888), being No. 4, vol. 1., of the “ Monographs of the Industrial Educational Association.” See Albert C. Sewall’s Life of Professor Albert Hopkins (1879). The best edition of Hopkins’s Works is that published in three volumes at Boston in 1852, containing an excellent biographical sketch by Professor Edwards A. Park. In 1854 was published separately Hopkins’s Treatise on the Millennium, which originally appeared in his System of Doctrines and in which he deduced from prophecies in Daniel and Revelation that the millennium would come “not far from the end of the twentieth century.” See also Stephen West’s Sketches of the Life of the Late Reverend Samuel Hopkins (Hartford, Conn., 1805), Franklin B. Dexter’s Biographical Sketches of the Graduates of Yale College and Williston Walker’s Ten New England Leaders (New York, I9of). (W. WR.) Cambridge on the I3th of October 1866. - -

HOPKINS, WILLIAM HARLEN (1856-1933). William Harlen (Bee) Hopkins, Panhandle qv pioneer and rancher, was born on March 24, 1856, on a farm near Bloomfield, Indiana. During his early years his family moved several times, first to Iowa, then to Shawnee County near Topeka, Kansas, and then in 1877 to North Dakota. Soon after that Bee Hopkins began his career as a rancher, when he went to Colorado to join his brother-in-law Will Young. In 1878 they helped trail the Pollard brothers' cattle to the Panhandle to begin the PO Ranch qv in Hemphill County. Hopkins turned over the PO cattle to Robert Moody qv after Moody bought out Milton Pollard's interest in 1881. In the meantime Hopkins had gone to work for the Horseshoe Ranch ( see LAUREL LEAF RANCH) of Frank Kerrick (or Karrick). When J. V. Andrews bought the Horseshoe from Kerrick in 1879, Hopkins was made foreman. His two younger brothers, Joseph (Hoos) and Andrew (Josh), joined him there. Hopkins was retained as foreman after the Texas Land and Cattle Company qv bought out the Horseshoe and started using the Laurel Leaf brand in 1882. Friction developed when Edgar Wilson, the syndicate's general manager, tried to get Hopkins to run off some neighboring farmers and small stockmen who had recently settled the area along the Gunter-Munson survey strip. The foreman refused to do so, and his threatened resignation was averted only by a raise in salary to twenty-five dollars a month.

    Freedom Admission Certificates
This is the certificate for the apprenticship of William Hopkins the younger to his father, William Hopkins the elder, in the Vintners Company of London. It is the original document, and is signed by William (probably the elder). The date of the certificate is 3 Nov 1686, when William the younger would have been sixteen, a usual age for an apprenticship to begin. William the younger was given the freedom of the city in June 1695 ( City Freedom Admission Papers Index, 1681-1700 This is the certificate giving Benjamin Hopkins the freedom of the city and membership in the Vintners Company. It was dated 14 May 1705, and signed by Robert Pate, carpenter, who was a friend of William Hopkins and mentioned in his will. William died in July of that year. Benjamin was admitted to the Vintners by Patrimony, rather than apprenticship, because his father was a member. The date of his admission in the City Freedom Admission Papers Index, 1701-1713 is October 1705. In the Quaker records, William the younger is said to be a shopkeeper, while Benjamin and William the elder are said to be Vintners and gardeners. This may mean that William the younger didn't follow the vintner's trade after his admission; he lived in Buckinghamshire after his marriage, and may have preferred following another line of business. Regarding the occupation of gardener, I spoke with one of the reference librarians at the Guildhall Library, who said that the guilds were losing their former power during this time period, and sometimes admitted people to membership who didn't intend to follow that trade. I checked the records of the Gardeners Company, but didn't find either William or Benjamin Hopkins in them.
