George William Horner
At the Annual Dinner, November 1999, I was handed a letter from Mr. Brian Merton Gould of Norwich. He wanted any information or background on the school career of George Horner in the late 20s/early 30s. After a little search in the school magazines of the period I was able to establish a few details of Horner's School Certificate results and a record of his working first in the Taunton Public Library, where he passed the first of the Library Association's exams 'with Distinction' before moving to London and work at the Fulham Library. There, the trail seems to grow cold although it is possible that there is some record of his further career in the annals of the old London Branch (if they exist). I also found that Horner had been 'assistant editor' to Mr. Mitford for his last few terms at Huish's. All this was duly passed to Mr Gould, with the comment '...Mitford, whom I remember as a fiery little Welshman and others remember as being handy with his fists'. (see Clem Nettell's memoir of the 1940's Mr Gould is quite excited by this piece of somewhat colourful background - 'short and vivid' he describes it - and has requested permission to include it in a second publication about his late friend. All being well, there will be more on this later on.

Country Wife, The - William Wycherly
Guide picks (1675) "The Country Wife" was written by William Wycherly in 1675. Meet Horner, Quack, Mr. and Mrs. Pinchwife, Alithea, Sparkish, and Harcourt all characters in this bawdy Restoration Comedy.
Between Men and The Country Wife

Eva Sedgwick writes, "Pinchwife and Sparkish represent two extremes of the male traffic in women: Pinchwife fears the exchange to an obsessive degree and tries to take himself out of it (which he canít do) while Sparkish seeks it out to an obsessive degree such that he becomes 'a pander to [his] own wife.'" Country Wife roars with funny
Abbi Hake writes, "It was a time of jealous husbands, unfaithful wives and gallant playboys." From Naivete‚ to Sophistication "In this 1675 comedy of manners, Wycherly takes a comic look at the follies of foolish husbands and unhappy wives."

The Mark Woolman Horner Music Education Fund
Presenting Possibilities ~ Encouraging Excellence
The overall goal of the Music Education Fund is to present possibilities to talented young musicians in the MDI community, and to encourage excellence in their musical pursuits. In that effort, fund organizers held a very successful benefit concert in September 1999. “The Art of the Trombone” featured four prominent trombonists from The San Antonio Symphony, The Boston Symphony, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and The New York Philharmonic. Many area music students attended the concert, where they had a chance to meet and talk with the musicians about their work, and how they achieved success. In March 2000, The Music Education Fund sponsored a collaborative effort with The Juilliard School’s outreach program to bring a brass quintet to MDI for a week. Five Juilliard graduate students spent the week living with area families, teaching, mentoring, and playing music with MDI students and teachers in the elementary and high schools. The highlight of the week was a concert performed by the Juilliard quintet and MDI students. The outreach program is slated to become a yearly event and will feature a different instrumental group each year. In addition to the Bar Harbor Brass week, future projects may include scholarships, purchase of instruments and music, and other concerts.

    IN MEMORIAM
Our lives go on without you
    But nothing is the same
We have to hide our heartache
    When someone speaks your name
Sad are the tears that love you
Silent are the tears that fall
    Living our lives without you
Is the hardest part of all.
    You did so many things
Your heart was kind and true And when we needed someone We would always count on you. The things we feel so deeply Are the hardest things to say But we your family loved you In a very special way. Our family chain is broken And nothing seems the same But as God calls us one by one The chain will link again. When thoughts go back, as they often do, We treasure the memories we have of you. This day is remembered and quietly kept, No words are needed, we will never forget. Two years have passed since that sad day When Tim was called away; What we would give to see your face Or hear your voice again. No words we speak could ever say How much we miss you. You will be in our hearts and thoughts forever.
