Subject: Message from Heidi Householder
I'd like to relate the following message from Heidi Householder,
the widow of Alston Householder, which I summarized from a
recent phone conversation with her:
1. She would like to thank everybody who has sent letters of
condolence to her after Alston's death. She plans to
personally write everybody back but right now she is not
in good enough shape to do that yet.
2. She wants to make a correction to a mistake in some public reports of Alston's death: Alston didn't die at home but at the Santa Monica Hospital.

The Householder Symposium on Numerical Linear Algebra will be
held June 17-21, 2002 at the Peebles Hotel Hydro, Scotland,
about 22 miles southwest of Edinburgh. This meeting is the
fifteenth in a series, previously called the Gatlinburg Symposia.
The name honors Alston S. Householder, one of the pioneers in
numerical linear algebra and organizer of the first four meetings. The meeting has traditionally been held in an isolated location and is very informal in style. Each attendee is given the opportunity to

From: Ed D'Azevedo ( e6d@ornl.gov ) Subject: PhD position (Scientific Computing) at ORNL (US) Date: Fri, 06 Sep 2002 16:06:34 -0400 ALSTON S. HOUSEHOLDER FELLOWSHIP in Scientific Computing The Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites outstanding candidates to apply for the Alston S. Householder Fellowship in Scientific Computing. The Fellowship honors Dr. Alston S. Householder, founding director of the Mathematics Division (now CSM) at ORNL and recognizes his seminal research contributions to the fields of numerical analysis and scientific computing. Funding for the Householder Fellowship comes from the Computational Mathematics Project, which is supported by the Office of Mathematical, Information, and Computational Sciences of the U.S. Department of Energy ( http://www.sc.doe.gov/production/octr/mics/index.html ). Each Householder Fellowship is a one-year appointment (potentially renewable for a second year) that provides access to state-of-the-art computational facilities (high-performance workstations and parallel architectures), and collaborative research opportunities in active research programs in advanced scientific computing and computational sciences. The Fellowship offers a competitive salary, fringe benefits, and travel opportunities. The purpose of the Householder Fellowship is to promote innovative research in scientific computing on advanced computer architectures and to facilitate technology transfer from the laboratory research environment to industry and academia through advanced training of new computational scientists.
