Bachet
was born at Bourg in 1581, and died in 1638. He wrote the , of which the first edition was issued in 1612, a second and enlarged edition was brought out in 1624; this contains an interesting collection of arithmetical tricks and questions, many of which are quoted in my Mathematical Recreations and Essays . He also wrote , which exists in manuscript; and a translation of the Arithmetic of Diophantus. Bachet was the earliest writer who discussed the solution of indeterminate equations by means of continued fractions.
Mersenne
Marin Mersenne , born in 1588 and died at Paris in 1648, was a Franciscan friar, who made it his business to be acquainted and correspond with the French mathematicians of that date and many of their foreign contemporaries. In 1634 he published a translation of Galileo's mechanics; in 1644 he issued his Cogita Physico-Mathematica , by which he is best known, containing an account of some experiments in physics; he also wrote a synopsis of mathematics, which was printed in 1664.

Financial planning for the future
In the Issue 11 of Plus the article Have we caught your interest? showed that an understanding of the mathematics of compound interest is essential to making the right short-term investment decisions. This article goes further: it examines the role of actuarial mathematics in long-term planning for the future.

They desired a better understanding of gambling odds. Some study about dice date even earlier. There are recorded attempts to understand odds dating back to Roman times. Cardano published Liber de Ludo Alea (Book on Games of Chance) in 1526. He discusses dice as well stakes games. He then computes fair stakes based on the number of outcomes. He was also aware of independent events and the multiplication rule: if A and B are independent events then Cardano discussed this problem: How many throws must be allowed to provide even odds for attaining two sixes on a pair of dice? Cardano reasoned it should be 18. He also argued that with a single dice, three rolls are required for even odds of rolling a 2. He was wrong. This type problem still challenges undergraduate math majors to this day.

Some short "biographies"
In this paper I have mentioned a number of almost unknown mathematicians and other persons. Therefore I will give some biographical information here. For completeness, I also include the well-known ones. The sources I have used are referred to in parenthesis. George Anson (1697-1762) was an English admiral. Famous for his journey around the world 1740-44. M. P. for Hedon 1744-47. ( Apollonius of Perga (ca. 200 BC-ca. 100 BC) was a Greek mathematician. His famous work, The Conics , studied the conic sections in remarkable detail, and introduced the terms parabola, ellipse and hyperbola. ( Archimedes of Syracuse (287 BC-212 BC) was a Greek mathematician and inventor. His greatest contributions were in geometry. His most famous work was Measurement of the Circle Isaac Barrow (1630-1677) was an English mathematician. Professor of Greek at Cambridge, and geometry at Gresham College. Became the first Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge in 1663. Teacher of Newton. Developed a method of determining tangents, and found a geometric version of the fundamental theorem of calculus. ( George Berkeley (1685-1753) was an Irish philosopher. He studied at the University of Dublin, and worked at Trinity College, Dublin 1707-12. In 1710 he published

Wikipedia:Rouse History of Mathematics
(Redirected from Rouse History of Mathematics There are a series of articles transcribed by Dr. David R. Wilkins (dwilkins@maths.tcd.ie) School of Mathematics Trinity College, Dublin at http://www.maths.tcd.ie/pub/HistMath/People/ They all start with a line: From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Are they fair game to grab as source material for our wikipedia? I know we are scarfing stuff from the 1911 encyclopedia, this is from 1908, so it should be under the same lack of restrictions.... discussion about sending an email, email is written, time elapses

40. Jakob Bernoulli
Jacob Bernoulli was the brother of johann Bernoulli and the uncle of Bernoulli travelledto the Netherlands where he met many mathematicians including hudde.

Home Geschichte Mathematiker Zitate ... Suche Bernoulli Jakob (1654 - 1705, Basel) Jacob Bernoulli 's father, Nicolaus Bernoulli (1623-1708) inherited the spice business in Basel that had been set up by his own father, first in Amsterdam and then in Basel. The family, of Belgium origin, were refugees fleeing from persecution by the Spanish rulers of the Netherlands. Philip, the King of Spain, had sent the Duke of Alba to the Netherlands in 1567 with a large army to punish those opposed to Spanish rule, to enforce adherence to Roman Catholicism, and to re-establish Philip's authority. Alba set up the Council of Troubles which was a court that condemned over 12000 people but most, like the Bernoulli family who were of the Protestant faith, fled the country. Nicolaus Bernoulli was an important citizen of Basel, being a member of the town council and a magistrate. Jacob Bernoulli's mother also came from an important Basel family of bankers and local councillors. Jacob Bernoulli was the brother of Johann Bernoulli and the uncle of Daniel Bernoulli . He was compelled to study philosophy and theology by his parents, which he greatly resented, and he graduated from the University of Basel with a master's degree in philosophy in 1671 and a licentiate in theology in 1676.
