HUNTINGTON, IN— Huntington College will hold a special convocation to honor J. Edward Roush at 11 a.m. on April 28 in the Merillat Centre for the Arts auditorium. College leaders will pay tribute to Dr. Roush for 50 years of service on the Huntington College Board of Trustees. The public is cordially invited to attend. The special guest speaker will be long-time Roush colleague, Congressman Lee Hamilton, who serves as director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and as director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University. Other speakers will include Hon. Paul Cherry, judge of the District Court of DeKalb County and chairman of the Huntington College Board of Trustees; Dr. G. Blair Dowden, Huntington College president; and Dr. Norris Friesen, vice president of student development. Last October, Roush completed his fiftieth year as a member of the Huntington College Board of Trustees. His association with the College actually dates to 1938, when as a recent graduate of Huntington High School, he enrolled as a student at Huntington College. He demonstrated leadership ability early on, serving as student body president, managing editor of the yearbook, business manager of the Huntingtonian, and as a member of the debate team and the varsity basketball and tennis teams.

This list includes names of persons Peirce sent letters to and/or received letters from, either probably or certainly, and names of people who wrote letters concerning Peirce, a few of which Peirce had copies of, that have been retrieved in different archives. The list also includes names of institutions. We strongly wish that readers interested in this list would look for a number of the names in their local archives in the hope of finding new Peirce-related letters. We expect that thousands of letters by Peirce still survive in unsearched archives both in the U.S. and abroad. Please join the effort in their recovery!

Edward C. Stouder. A large number of the energetic and progressive men of Huntington county have spent their lives in this neighborhood, growing with it and prospering with its prosperity, and have always been interested in its development. They are as a class stouthearted men, loyal to their section, and their devotion to their county has led to the wonderful growth which has marked its progress during the years. One of these men is Edward C. Stouder, of Polk township, whose entire career has been passed here, and who is now the owner of a handsome farm of 115 acres, located on section 1, on the Range Line turnpike, two miles east and two miles south of Andrews, and six miles southwest of Huntington.
On January 14, 1894, Mr. Stouder was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Beal, who was born in Lancaster township, Huntington county, Indiana, and was eleven years of age when she entered the home of J. D. Campbell, by whom she was educated in the district schools. Five children have been born to them, namely: Nondus, nineteen years of age, a graduate of the common schools; Paul, a graduate of the graded schools and now a student in the Andrews High school; and Wilbur, Charles and Dale, who are attending the public schools.

Contents Edward H. Davis Guide to the Microfilm Text Edward H. Davis Edward H. Davis (1862-1951) was an indefatigable collector and traveller. Born in Brooklyn to a sea-faring family, Davis was educated in the New York public schools and took further training as an artist at the Brooklyn Art Guild. Ill health dictated that he move to a more agreeable climate, so at the young age of twenty two he set off for California, sailing there through the Panama canal. He arrived in the booming town of San Diego in January 1885. In need of a job, he put his draftsman’s talents to use, map-making for the city, and drawing house plans. But it was a fortunate 1887 real estate venture with his father that provided the capital necessary to establish a home on what became 600 acres at Mesa Grande in the mountainous back country of San Diego County. He built a lean-to addition to the shanty that was on the property, and settled in with his wife, Anna May, and their young son, Harvey. Soon various members of both their families joined them, pushing the cabin’s capacity to the limit. Space constraints were further challenged as Davis almost immediately began to acquire objects from his Kumeyaay (Diegueño) Indian neighbors.

    The Clash of Ignorance
    by Edward W. Said
Samuel Huntington's article "The Clash of Civilizations?" appeared in the Summer 1993 issue of Foreign Affairs, where it immediately attracted a surprising amount of attention and reaction. Because the article was intended to supply Americans with an original thesis about "a new phase" in world politics after the end of the cold war, Huntington's terms of argument seemed compellingly large, bold, even visionary. He very clearly had his eye on rivals in the policy-making ranks, theorists such as Francis Fukuyama and his "end of history" ideas, as well as the legions who had celebrated the onset of globalism, tribalism and the dissipation of the state. But they, he allowed, had understood only some aspects of this new period. He was about to announce the "crucial, indeed a central, aspect" of what "global politics is likely to be in the coming years." Unhesitatingly he pressed on: "It is my hypothesis that the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic. The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will dominate global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future."
