Above: Remains of the motte (left) and curtain wall (right) at Huntington Castle. Huntington Castle: History
H untington Castle, 2½ miles south west of Kington, seems to have been founded as the direct successor of Kington Castle , although it must be realized that the earlier history of the vill or manor is somewhat obscure. The first castle of Huntington is to be identified with Turret Castle, a motte and bailey 1 mile south and east of the current fortress. As Huntington vill was in the hands of the Crown until the 1090's it would appear likely that the first castle was constructed under the aegis of William fitz Osbern or his son, Earl Roger of Hereford. Between 1066 and 1075 the two earls held the king's lands in Herefordshire. William fitz Osbern, after invading Brycheiniog in the summer of 1070 and defeating the regal rulers of South Wales, established several castles up and down his borders between Wigmore in the north and Chepstow in the south. Turret Castle may well have been one of these fortresses. William, who had switched his theatre of operations to the Low Countries of Flanders in the winter of 1070, taking only 10 of his knightly retainers with him, was brought to battle at Cassel and there, according to Ordericus Vitalis, the Norman Chronicler, he died how he had lived, by the sword.

Edward Said's primary focus in "Culture and Imperialism" was the
effect that imperialism has had on the the culture of all nations involved.
He feels that imperialism has had as much effect on the West as it has had
on the countries controlled by the West. Thus, he sees throughout history
an intertwined set of relationships between all nations which is impossible
to ignore. Huntington seems to ignore these relationships and sees
civilizations as starkly separated from each. In his world, civilizations
may effect each other externally, but internally they are whole,
impenetrable and unchanging. Said may not disagree with the premise that
post cold war conflicts will occur between civilisations, but he will find

The globe is a limited space occupied by a finite and definitively
identifiable number of essential "core groups" which are bound to conflict
with each other given their partioned nature and incompatible world-views.
    Compromise/understanding between "cultures," a complication-of or blurring
between the lines of identity set forth under the rubric of "civil-
izations," etc. are all ruled out by Huntington's conceptualization of
international relations. For Huntington, the world is now locked into
being a place where the West (already assumed to be a single, consolidated
identity/entity in and of itself), separated by an unbridgeable gap from
those irksome "others" (Muslims, Confucians and similar broad labels), will find itself struggling against a wide array of dark and suspicious inter- national conspiracies spawned by inherently hostile foreigners. Said
