Historical Geology and the Philosophy and Development of Geologic Thought in Britain COURSE DESCRIPTION England was the birthplace of modern geology. William Buckland Robert Hooke William Smith James Hutton ... Charles Darwin , and Adam Sedgewick , all contributed major principles that collectively became the cornerstone of historical geology. This course will cover the traditional topics presented in historical geology courses that satisfy core requirements. Continental evolution and the origin and diversity of life through geologic time will be covered during lecture periods. Field trips to sites significant in the development of geologic thought and examination of collections and displays of fossil organisms will accent class discussions. Course Objectives: 1) To appreciate the ties of English culture and history to the development of geologic thought. 2) To understand the concept of geologic time and the scale earth processes operate in. 3) To gain a concept of the history and evolution of life on earth. 4) To be able to describe the birth and evolution of the continents.

James Hutton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. James Hutton 3 June 26 March Scottish geologist , noted for formulating uniformitarianism and the Plutonist school of thought. Considered by many to be the father of modern geology Trained as a lawyer and medical doctor, Hutton found himself attracted to the nascent science of geology. While working as a "gentleman farmer" in Berwickshire during his thirties and forties, he hit on a variety of ideas to explain the rock formations he saw around him. Moving to Edinburgh , then in the throes of the Scottish Enlightenment , he fell in with several first-class minds in the sciences including John Playfair and Joseph Black.

Life and Dr Hutton From Palaeontology Newsletter Paul Pearson, University of Bristol 1997 was a year of celebrations for geology, with the bicentenaries of the death of James Hutton (1726-1797) and the birth of Charles Lyell (1797-1875). The two great Scotsmen were remembered in style by the scientific world (if not the media) with lavish international conferences held in Edinburgh and London. Hutton and Lyell stand out from many other figures from the early history of geology in that their science concerned cycles and processes, not just maps and strata. As speaker after speaker at the twin conferences emphasised, this kind of dynamic thinking is still very much key to the earth sciences. But what, specifically, do palaeontologists owe to these revered figures? In the case of Lyell, the answer is that we owe a great deal. The whole second volume of the Principles of Geology is devoted to the history of life, and was hugely influential in its day. Perhaps one reason why palaeontology is now so firmly embedded in the geological sciences, rather than with the life sciences where arguably it belongs, has much to do with the work of Lyell. It can even be held that Lyell's statistical treatment of species originations and extinctions was a distant herald of modern analytical palaeobiology. Hutton, on the other hand, belonged to an earlier age when scientific knowledge of fossils was much more rudimentary. He admitted that his main interest in "figured stones" as he called them was not so much their biological affinity, but their mineralogical nature. True, he did specifically argue that fossils could be used to infer the original nature of particular environments, for example by distinguishing land and sea objects. However, he was also a strong advocate for the then standard view that each species was a divine creation, and fossils represent essentially the same species as are found today: "There are, indeed, varieties in those species, compared with the present animals which we examine, but no greater varieties than may perhaps be found among the same species in different quarters of the globe". This is from possibly the first geologist to chip fossils from the Coniston limestone!

Printable version An intelligent and charming monarch or irresponsible risk-taker? Ronald Hutton unmasks the real Charles II. Detail from a print showing the coronation of Charles II. Introduction Biographies of King Charles II show a curious discrepancy. Popular books, plays and films overwhelmingly portray a man of extraordinary charm, wit, courtesy and affability, loyal to old friends, perceptive and intelligent, and marvellously cultured; the monarch who introduced the British to champagne and yachting. This picture is true. Academic historians, by contrast, almost all see Charles as a king of no vision and no fixed ideals, irresponsible, unbusinesslike and with a disastrous taste for taking risks, who turned his three nations into states riven by chronic instability and distrust. This is also an accurate assessment. The difference is largely a matter of preoccupation. The former image is largely that of the king in his leisure pursuits, while the latter is that of him as a ruler. What must be especially significant is that virtually all those contemporaries who have left opinions paid tribute to Charles's social charms, and none ranked him as a great monarch.
