Hypatia of Alexandria
Maria Dzielska
Translated by F. Lyra Hypatiabrilliant mathematician, eloquent Neoplatonist, and a woman renowned for her beautywas brutally murdered by a mob of Christians in Alexandria in 415. She has been a legend ever since. In this engrossing book, Maria Dzielska searches behind the legend to bring us the real story of Hypatia's life and death, and new insight into her colorful world. Historians and poets, Victorian novelists and contemporary feminists have seen Hypatia as a symbolof the waning of classical culture and freedom of inquiry, of the rise of fanatical Christianity, or of sexual freedom. Dzielska shows us why versions of Hypatia's legend have served her champions' purposes, and how they have distorted the true story. She takes us back to the Alexandria of Hypatia's day, with its Library and Museion, pagan cults and the pontificate of Saint Cyril, thriving Jewish community and vibrant Greek culture, and circles of philosophers, mathematicians, astronomers, and militant Christians. Drawing on the letters of Hypatia's most prominent pupil, Synesius of Cyrene, Dzielska constructs a compelling picture of the young philosopher's disciples and her teaching. Finally she plumbs her sources for the facts surrounding Hypatia's cruel death, clarifying what the murder tells us about the tensions of this tumultuous era.

Hypatia of Alexandria
Maria Dzielska
Translated by F. Lyra "This gem of academic detective work may be the last word on a subject that has fascinated for centuries."
Anthony Gottlieb, New York Times Book Review "Like Cleopatra, Mary Magdalene, Joan of Arc...Hypatia has been retailored to suit the psychic needs of anybody retrospecting her, rational, romantic, nostalgic, or loony. [In this book] Dzielska demystifies Hypatia, sifting patiently through the original sources, from the Sud lexicon to the correspondence of Synesius of Cyrene."
John Leonard, The Nation "Through a subtle reading of the ancient sources, Dzielska reconstructs a powerful and persuasive account of Hypatia's life. She also addresses the difficult task of describing her philosophy...with engagement and finesse."
Wilbur R. Knorr, Science "[A] pithy and engaging attempt to state what we actually know about Hypatia."
Carlin Romano, Philadelphia Inquirer "Hypatia, an exceptional philosopher, mathematician and high profile public figure of late fourth and early fifth century Alexandria, ironically owes her fame in history to the violent and politically contentious nature of her death in 415 AD. From the moment she was brutally murdered by a mob of angry Christians, Hypatia became a legend, a figure who has ever since been used and manipulated by artists, writers, poets and feminists. Hypatia (355 or 370 - 415)
philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Hypatia's father, Theon of Alexandria, was a teacher of mathematics with the Museum of Alexandria in Egypt. A center of Greek intellectual and cultural life, the Museum included many independent schools and the great library of Alexandria. Hypatia studied with her father, and with many others including Plutarch the Younger. She herself taught at the Neoplatonist school of philosophy. She became the salaried director of this school in 400. She probably wrote on mathematics, astronomy and philosophy, including about the motions of the planets, about number theory and about conic sections.

Reviewed by: Marge Murray, Book Review Editor, Department of Mathematics, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0123; email: murray@calvin.math.vt.edu In March of 1994, the American Mathematical Monthly published an excellent article by Michael Deakin ([1]) dealing with the life and legend, but most importantly with the mathematics, of Hypatia of Alexandria, the first woman mathematician for whom we have documentary evidence. Taken together with Maria Dzielska's new biographical treatment, Hypatia of Alexandria , published this fall by Harvard University Press, it is possible to construct a fairly complete picture of Hypatia: her life and times; her work as a teacher, mathematician, philosopher, and religious and political figure; and the circumstances of her violent death. While Hypatia's murder was the misogynist act of a Christian mob, Dzielska's book makes it clear that it is misleading to portray Hypatia's death as the violent defeat of the female and non-Christian by the male and Christian. Christian men were at least as numerous among the supporters and admirers of Hypatia as among her opponents. It is probably more instructive to draw parallels to life in modern Belfast, Beirut, or even Sarajevo (as Deakin is inclined to do in [1], page 236), than to portray her death as the result of a sharply delineated ideological or religious conflict.

    1) "Hypatia was murdered by "a troop of savage and merciless fanatics" instigated by Cyril, and the crime was never punished, apparently because "superstition [Christianity] perhaps would more gently expiate the blood of a virgin, than the banishment of a saint." This representation of the "Alexandrian crime" perfectly fitted Gibbon's theory that the rise of Christianity was the crucial cause of the fall of the ancient civilization." page 4 2) "After studying the epigram some scholars, such as Wolfgang Meyer, have inferred that there were two Hypatias: Theon's daughter, at the turn of the fourth and fifth centuries, and Erythrius' daughter, in the second half of the fifth century. This conclusion, however, is only partly correct, for we know that there were more women named Hypatia, including a benefactress of the church in the mid-fifth century . . . . The name was by no means uncommon, and it was not confined to pagan women." page 23 3) "This brief survey indicates that Hypatia's closest, most loyal students were people who later held high imperial or ecclesiastical positions. Of even greater significance is evidence that agents of the imperial power arriving in Alexandria became close acquaintances of Hypatia and most likely attended her lectures." page 38

Hypatia of Alexandria By: Eva Sandler Hypatia was born around the year of 370 AD, in Alexandria Egypt. She was the daughter of Theon, who was considered one of the most educated men in Alexandria. Theon was a well known scholar and professor of mathematics at the University of Alexandria, at a time when mathematics and sciences were considered heresy by the Christians. Because Theon raised Hypatia in a world of education, he influenced Hypatia's enthusiasm for mathematics and sciences (astronomy and astrology) as she grew older. Hypatia received education from her father, at a time when it was unusual for women to receive formal education. It is believed that she surpassed her father's knowledge at a very young age. Hypatia was also a strong believer in the importance of education. Hypatia is famous for editing the work on the Conics of Apollonius, which divided cones into different parts by a plane. This concept developed the ideas of hyperbolas, parabolas, and ellipses. She is also famous for writing The Astronomical Canon. Hypatia was the first woman to have a profound impact on the survival of early thought in mathematics. She was a brilliant and powerful lecturer, and her philosophy had religious undertones. She also designed an astrolabe, which is a tool that determines the altitudes of the stars and planets, as well as a hydroscope, which is used to view objects far below the surface of the water. Hypatia was the first noted woman mathematician, writer, esteemed teacher, astronomer, and scientist.

Hypatia of Alexandria by Brian Charles Clark "What Hypatia got," of course, was murdered by an Alexandrian mob in 415, when she was 60 years old. While the date of the murder is well attested, her age is not. In the literary myths that have grown up around Hypatia, she is portrayed as a young and beautiful virgin, typically around 25 years old. As her writings are slowly being reconstructed, however, it becomes obvious that she must have been considerably older, and thus her birth year is given as 355 [67-8]. Another common misconception is that Hypatia was a pagan. In fact, primary sources (especially letters written by Synesius of Cyrene) indicate that her allegiance were with her own system of ethical values which transcended—or were aloof from—both the pagan and the Christian factions. With its modern connotations, calling Hypatia a "virgin" doesn’t capture the depth of her practice of sophrosyne [103]. More than mere abstinence, hers was, as the etyms of the word suggest, a "wise restraint," or, more psychologically, a conscious sublimation born of her love of wisdom. Hypatia was politically active in Alexandria, and up until Cyrus was elected patriarch, often consulted by politicians [27

    Hypatia of Alexandria
Many things about Hypatia are controversial, from the year of her birth to if she truly invented certain things. But one thing is certain she had a large impression on mathematics. From the beginning of her life, which is thought to be either 370 or 355 C.E., Hypatia filled her mind with learning. Her father was a great scholar from the University of Alexandria, Egypt. He taught her everything he knew, including astronomy, astrology, and mathematics. Soon, Hypatia, too, became an energetic scholar. Because Hypatia knew so much, other scholars came to learn from her. Hypatia could do things besides mathematics. She also knew much about theology and was a profound orator. Some historians think that Hypatia invented the astrolabe, but it is certain that she introduced the ideas of hyperbolas, ellipses, and parabolas. She made such an amazing impact on mathematics that even Isaac Newton expanded on her work. Later in her life, there were many riots because Christianity was beginning to overthrow other religions. She was friends with the enemy of a Christian leader, so the Christian spread violent rumors about her. Hypatia was on her way home in 415 C.E., when she was attacked and stabbed to death with broken pottery. She was later dragged through the streets. Fifth Graders: Pamela, Valerie, and Pearl

    Hypatia of Alexandria, Egypt
The first woman to make a substantial contribution to the development of mathematics, astronomy and philosophy. (b. 370 d. March 415) Hypatia was the daughter of Theon, a teacher who was one of the most educated men in Alexandria, Egypt. Hypatia was raised in an environment of thought by Theon who was himself a well known scholar and a professor of mathematics at the University of Alexandria. Theon and Hypatia formed a strong bond as he taught Hypatia his own knowledge passion for answers to the unknown. Hypatia surpassed her father's knowledge at a young age. However, while Hypatia was still under her father's discipline, he also developed for her a physical routine to ensure for her a healthy body as well as a highly functional mind. Theon instructed Hypatia on religion and the fundamentals of teaching and oration. As Hypatia grew older, she began to develop an enthusiasm for mathematics and the sciences (astronomy and astrology). At the age of 30, she became Head of the Platonist school at Alexandria. She taught philosophy, mathematics and astronomy. Her legendary knowledge, modesty, and public speaking ability flourished during this time.

    So, You're Curious About Hypatia....
Hypatia of Alexandria (approx. AD 370 - 415) was the daughter of the mathematician Theon. She was a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher (a prominent proponent of Neoplatonism) who became famous throughout the the eastern Mediterranean, and had a great number of students. She was an attractive woman as well, and had many male friends, although she rejected her suitors (I understand she had a revulsion for the physical aspects of love, although I haven't read the material cited for this). One of her more famous devotees was Synesius of Cyrene, bishop of Ptolemais in Libya. She became the Librarian of Alexandria (the Library of Alexandria was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) and wrote commentaries on Apollonius' work on conic sections (geometry) and Diophantus (simple and quadratic equations, and early algebraic thought), as well as revising the third book of her father's Commentary on the Almagest (a commentary on Ptolemy's book series on astronomy). When she reached middle age, Cyril (Saint Cyril) became the new Patriarch of Alexandria (a very high position in the Christian hierarchy of the times). He apparently had spent his early training with a rather virulent sect of Christian monks, and shortly after taking office, he kicked out another Christian sect on grounds of heresy. Later, he led a mob in destroying the homes and businesses of the Alexandrian Jewish community. The prefect of Egypt, Orestes, a friend of Hypatia, criticized Cyril for these acts; Cyril summoned his friends from the sect (the monks of Nitria) to act as his personal army. Cyril spread it about that the prefect was being corrupted by his friendship with this unclean Pagan woman.

Hypatia of Alexandria born c. 370, died 415 Although a brilliant and popular teacher of Neo-Platonic thought, Hypatia of Alexandria unfortunately lived at a time of political and religious change. Her popularity and influence are well-documented. Students flocked to study with her, scholars visited her home and lecture room. She occupied the Chair of Platonic Philosophy at the University of Alexandria, and served as an advisor to the government. She was also a pagan at a time when Christianity was rising. The Bishop of Alexandria resented the influence she had with the government. Although he could not condemn or attack her outright, it was through his encouragement that a group of fanatical monks waylaid her on the way to the University. They brutally murdered her (various accounts say she was quartered, flayed, or hacked to death) and burned her body.
