Hypatia of Alexandria
A martyr to feminine intellect. Born in Alexendria in A.D. 370, Hypatia came into a rarefied intellectual world. Her father, Theon, was a mathematician and astronomer at the Museum at Alexandria, and Hypatia was his prize pupil. She studied in Athens and Italy, and she became a lecturer and writer in the fields of mathematics, philosophy, astronomy and mechanics. Her classes were attended by students from throughout the known world, and her treatise on algebra, Arithmetica, was a thirteen-volume definitive study. Practical technology was Hypatia's main interest, which led to her invention of the pane astrolabe, used to measure the positions of the sun and stars and to calculate the ascendant sign of the zodiac. It consisted of a pair of rotating discs made of open-work metal, rotating one on top of the other around a removable peg. Hypatia perfected the device to the point where it could accurately solve problems in spherical astronomy. Hypatia never married, although she was courted by and kept company with many of Alexandria's movers and shakers. Unhappily, these connections did not save her from the fanatical Christian sects whose influence was becoming increasingly felt. During her lifetime, intellectualism gave way to findamentalism, and to religious dogma. In A.D. 389 the Serapeum Library was sacked and burned by order of Theophilos, bishop of Alexandria. All neo-Platonists were persecuted, and Hypatia became a controversial figure because of her fame and influence.

The Martyrdom of Hypatia (or The Death of the Classical World)
by Mangasar Magurditch Mangasarian
A speech given before the Independent Religious Society at the Majestic Theater in Chicago Our subject this morning takes us to the city of Alexandria, one of the greatest intellectual centers in the days when Athens and Rome still ruled the world. The capital of Egypt received its name from the man who conceived and executed its design Alexander the Great. Under the Ptolemies, a line of Greek kings, Alexandria soon sprang into eminence, and, accumulating culture and wealth, became the most powerful metropolis of the Orient. Serving as the port of Europe, it attracted the lucrative trade of India and Arabia. Its markets were enriched with the gorgeous silks and fabrics from the bazaars of the Orient. Wealth brought leisure, and it, in turn, the arts. It became, in time, the home of a wonderful library and schools of philosophy, representing all the phases and the most delicate shades of thought. At one time it was the general belief that the mantle of Athens had fallen upon the shoulders of Alexandria. But there was a stubborn and superstitious Oriental constituency in the city which would not blend with the foreign element namely, the Greeks and the Romans. This antagonism between the Egyptian born and the children of Hellas and Rome, who were Alexandrians only by adoption, was frequently the occasion of street riots, feuds, massacres, and civil wars.

Hypatia
Written by Ginny Adair, Class of 1998 (Agnes Scott College)
The life of Hypatia was one enriched with a passion for knowledge. Hypatia was the daughter of Theon, who was considered one of the most educated men in Alexandria, Egypt. Theon raised Hypatia in a world of education. Most historians now recognize Hypatia not only as a mathematician and scientist, but also as a philosopher. Historians are uncertain of different aspects of Hypatia's life. For example, Hypatia's date of birth is one that is highly debated. Some historians believe that Hypatia was born in the year 370 AD. On the other hand, others argue that she was an older woman (around 60) at the time of her death, thus making her birth in the year 355 AD. Throughout her childhood, Theon raised Hypatia in an environment of thought. Historians believe that Theon tried to raise the perfect human. Theon himself was a well known scholar and a professor of mathematics at the University of Alexandria. Theon and Hypatia formed a strong bond as he taught Hypatia his own knowledge and shared his passion in the search for answers to the unknown. As Hypatia grew older, she began to develop an enthusiasm for mathematics and the sciences (astronomy and astrology). Most historians believe that Hypatia surpassed her father's knowledge at a young age. However, while Hypatia was still under her father's discipline, he also developed for her a physical routine to ensure for her a healthy body as well as a highly functional mind. In her education, Theon instructed Hypatia on the different religions of the world and taught her how to influence people with the power of words. He taught her the fundamentals of teaching, so that Hypatia became a profound orator. People from other cities came to study and learn from her.

The Life of Hypatia
From Damascius's Life of Isidore , reproduced in The Suda
Translated by Jeremiah Reedy
Reprinted with permission from Alexandria 2 HYPATIA, daughter of Theon the geometer and philosopher of Alexandria, was herself a well-known philosopher. She was the wife of the philosopher Isidorus, and she flourished under the Emperor Arcadius. Author of a commentary on Diophantus, she also wrote a work called The Astronomical Canon and a commentary on The Conics of Apollonius. She was torn apart by the Alexandrians and her body was mocked and scattered through the whole city. This happened because of envy and her outstanding wisdom especially regarding astronomy. Some say Cyril was responsible for this outrage; others blame the Alexandrians' innate ferocity and violent tendencies for they dealt with many of their bishops in the same manner, for example George and Proterius.
Regarding Hypatia the Philosopher and the Sedition of the Alexandrians
Hypatia was born, reared, and educated in Alexandria. Since she had greater genius than her father, she was not satisfied with his instruction in mathematical subjects; she also devoted herself diligently to all of philosophy. The woman used to put on her philosopher's cloak and walk through the middle of town and publicly interpret Plato, Aristotle, or the works of any other philosopher to those who wished to hear her. In addition to her expertise in teaching she rose to the pinnacle of civic virtue. She was both just and chaste and remained always a virgin. She was so beautiful and shapely that one of her students fell in love with her and was unable to control himself and openly showed her a sign of his infatuation. Uninformed reports had Hypatia curing him of his affliction with the help of music. The truth is that the story about music is corrupt. Actually, she gathered rags that had been stained during her period and showed them to him as a sign of her unclean descent and said, "This is what you love, young man, and it isn't beautiful!" He was so affected by shame and amazement at the ugly sight that he experienced a change of heart and went away a better man.

Alexandria, March AD 415 - Christian and non-Christian students of Hypatia expressed shock and outrage when informed of their teacher's murder. Hypatia had been a popular, public lecturer in philosophy and mathematics. She was also a close advisor of Orestes, the Roman governor of Alexandria. He and other officials have called for a complete investigation of Hypatia's death.
Hypatia is the most recent victim of the mob violence that has racked this city over the last 6 months. It began with an attack on Orestes by a group of fanatical Christian monks. The monks were enraged over rumors that Orestes had been making sacrifices to outlawed Pagan gods. Orestes escaped from the mob uninjured, but the monk Peter was arrested, put on trial, and executed. The ensuing controversy over Peter' s execution has developed into a serious rift between city hall and church leaders.
Cyril, the Christian Bishop, held a press conference this morning. He denied that he ordered the attack on Hypatia. Meanwhile bands of monks continue to roam freely about the city.
