James Bond back to Career Ever since Mr. Pierce Brosnan spoke about possibly retiring as James Bond, the world has become obsessed with one question: "Who will be the next James Bond?" Names have been thrown about - British actors such as Colin Firth or Ioan Gruffudd have been named, a few non-English actors, such as Hugh Jackman (Australia) and Ewan McGregor (Scottish) have been mentioned, and there's even been talk of some unconventional Bonds: A bald Bond? Ross Kemp has expressed interest. A black Bond? Samuel L. Jackson says he'd like to play Bond. A gay Bond? Rupert Everett says he should have been James Bond. But everyone else aside, there's only ONE man who (in my opinion) is fit to follow Brosnan. Can we guess who? You've read it. Critics, writers, actors, directors, fans...they're all dropping the name Clive Owen. He's even been compared to a young Sean Connery. I mean, why not? It seems obvious - the man is hot in a tuxedo (Croupier) and drives a BMW like there's no tomorrow (The Hire). The man fits the profile. Of course, a few people don't want him to be the next James Bond. Roger Moore thinks Ewan McGregor should be Brosnan's follow up, but then again, Moore was a horrible Bond. "I don't think he really has the look of an international ladykiller, or the charisma to carry the Bond series on his shoulders," says one fan. Ha. "Can he carry the comedy?" asks another. Double ha. From another viewpoint, director Robert Altman doesn't want Clive Owen to be the next James Bond not because he lacks the skills, but simply because Altman thinks being Bond would ruin Owen's career.

Now, the World Entertainment News Network, by way of The Internet Movie Database Horatio Hornblower miniseries, is eager to succeed Brosnan as Agent 007. Table of Contributors Table of Contents Return to Encyclopedia Home Page Cuza, Alexandru Ioan (1820-1870) Ten days after the flight of Metternich from Vienna, Romanian reformers, including Cuza, were meeting in Iasi to plan for the future. He was present at the assembly at the Petersburg Hotel in Iasi in March, which drew up a reform program for Moldova. He promptly arrested by Prince Mihail Sturdza and exiled along with a d ozen of the most "dangerous" reformers. Though wounded in the arrest, he managed to escape, winding up in Blaj for the May Romanian National Assembly. In that same month, he signed the Brasov program of the Moldovan revolutionaries. Subsequently, he was in Bucovina and a member of the Moldovan revolutionary committee organized in June 1848. He served as a member of the executive committee and one of the principal fund raisers. Following the defeat of the revolutions, Cuza remained in exile in Paris and Constantinople, refusing to accept an amnesty from Prince Sturdza. When Grigore Ghica (who had secretly supported and sheltered many Moldovan revolutionaries in 1848) became Moldovan prince in April 1849, Cuza accompanied him and became involved in Moldovan administration and reform. In 1857, he was elected to the unionist Divan ad hoc in Moldova and active in the National Party. This culminated in 1859, when he was elected Prince of Moldova and then Muntenia, bringing about the de fa cto and then (1861) actual unification of the Romanian principalities into a Romanian national state. Ousted in a coup in 1866, Alexandru Ioan Cuza is remembered as one of the primary founders of modern Romania.

The Ioan Gruffudd Appreciation Site Welcome! No doubt you are here to learn about and drool over the handsome Welsh actor, Ioan Gruffudd. (His name is pronounced yo-IN griffith) And you have found a most excellent site to do it in.... When I realized that this gorgeous actor was virtually unknown, I made it my crusade to make him known...and do alot of drooling in the process! It's worth it, for those smoldering eyes, sculpted jaw, gorgeous dark hair.... Horatio Hornblower about a young midshipman's adventures during the Napoleonic wars. Maybe you experienced a very strong sense of deja vu, knowing you had seen him somewhere before. And you have. He also played the memorable part of Fifth Officer Harold Lowe in the blockbuster "Titanic." What? You don't remember any character by that name? Remember the "Is there anyone alive out there?" lifeboat guy? That's Ioan! Ioan, 27, was born in Cardiff, Wales. He is the oldest child in his family and has one younger brother and sister. Like many young boys in Wales, his dream was to become a rugby player, or an airline pilot, but he got bitten by the acting bug after landing a part in a Welsh film, at the young age of eleven. Two years later, he landed a part in the soap opera "Pobblycom", which lasted seven years. He left Cardiff for London to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Days after finishing, he returned to Cardiff and landed a part in a BBC drama "A Relative Stranger" then landed a part in another television movie, "Poldark." He got a taste of professional theatre at London's Gate Theatre, before getting roles in "Titanic" and "Wilde", in which he played the character of John Gray.

One of Wales' most exciting young actors, Ioan Gruffudd has starred as fifth officer Lowe in the multiple Oscar-winning epic, Titanic and as John Gray in the acclaimed biopic, Wilde. His television credits include the lead role of Horatio Hornblower in the Hornblower series for Carlton Television and Pip in Tony Marchant's adaptation of Great Expectations for the BBC. Other television credits for the RADA trained actor include Poldark, Double Exposure, A Relative Stranger, William Jones, and Pobol Y Cwn. 'As soon as I saw the script for Solomon and Gaenor,' explains Ioan, 'I fell in love with it. It's a lovely story and the theme of cultural identity is something as a Welshman I feel very strongly about. I thought it was a great opportunity to play a romantic lead and that it would be a challenge to play a Jewish character.' 'My character, Solomon is in his 20's. He's the eldest son of a devout Jewish family. When we first meet him in the film he's fighting with his Jewishness and rebelling against it. But his father is so strong he can't rebel completely otherwise he'd be thrown out of his family. Then he meets Gaenor, a young Welsh chapel girl and love takes over. He doesn't tell her that he's Jewish because he's ashamed and he doesn't want his family to know. Eventually it comes out and although he can resolve it with Gaenor, he can't resolve it with his family, who when they find out, send him to Cardiff.' 'It was the hardest role I've played so far,' reckons Ioan, 'because I had to immerse myself in a totally different time period and in a different religion, and I had to learn Yiddish, which was a completely new language to me.'
