Jeffreys A., Sir Harold Csillagászati munkáiban Jeffreys megállapította, hogy a négy külsô bolgó, a Jupiter, a Szaturnusz, az Uránusz és a Neptunusz nagyon hideg; modelleket dolgozott ki e bolygók szerkezetének a leírására. További csillagászati vizsgálatai során kutatta a Naprendszer eredetét, emellett foglalkoztatta a földrajzi szélesség változásának az elmélete is. A geofizikában a Föld hôtörténetét vizsgálta, 1940-ben társszerzôje volt a földrengéshullámok terjedési idejét táblázatokban közlô kötetnek, s elsôként feltételezte, hogy a Föld magja folyékony. Megmagyarázta a monszunok és a tengeri szelek eredetét, kimutatta, hogy a ciklonok döntô szerepet játszanak a légkör globális cirkulációjában. Jeffreys valószínûségszámítással és a matematikai fizika általános módszereivel is foglalkozott. Elnyerte a Királyi Csillagászati Társaság aranyérmét (1937) és a londoni Royal Society (Királyi Társaság) királyi érmét (1948). Legfontosabb munkái közé tartozik a The Earth: Its Origin, History and Physical Constitution A Föld eredete, története, fizikai felépítése;

This was not to have any basis in the constitution, however, until the 1707 Act of Union, creating the Kindgom of Great Britain from England and Scotland, and in 1801 a further Act of Union formed the United Kingdom from Great Britain and Ireland. Monarchs between the Union of the Crowns (1603) and the Union of the Parliaments (1707) are shown with both their English and Scottish styles, if they are different (Scottish in square brackets). British office-holders: Prime Ministers Name Party Dates in office British office-holders: Archbishops of Canterbury Name Dates in office British office-holders: Lord Chancellors and Lord Keepers of the Seal of England [2] Name Dates in office [2] The office of Lord Chancellor was the highest legal office in the land, and the holder could not be removed from office by the monarch. However, when a monarch found his Chancellor to be too obstructive, it was possible to remove the Great Seal from him and give them to another office holder, the Lord Keeper (of the Seal). This latter post was not held until death, and so the monarch could dismiss them at will. Until the Act of Union, there were seperate Chancellors and Lord Keepers for England and Scotland. Where an office-holder held a succession of titles (for instance Anthony Ashley Cooper, later Lord Ashley, later Earl of Shaftesbury), only the final title will be shown.

J. Tuzo Wilson
'I enjoy, and always have enjoyed, disturbing scientists.'
By ROBERT DEAN CLARK
Any of the thousands of daily visitors to the intellectual Disneyland known as the Ontario Science Centre has a good chance of going elbow to elbow with J. Tuzo Wilson (whom the co-jostler might easily mistake for Ray Milland, or a resurrected, sans tufted eyebrows, Henry Luce) at the keyboard of one of its many video games.
"Yes," confirms Mattie Howitt, Wilson's dervish of an administrative assistant from her command post adjacent to the director general's office, "I have to go get him off the floor all the time so he can sign the things he has to sign."
The center's ingenious video games are an evolutionary advance over their cousins Pac-Man et al , but despite that qualification the vision of Wilson at a console is jolting. It is comparable to one of Isaac Newton frolicking in a Restoration sandbox. The linkage of those names does not strain credibility because the 73-year-old Wilson is quite possibly the world's most honored living geophysicist. He is a major contributor to the recently developed dynamic view of the earth, a revolution in scientific thinking that ranks in importance with those which followed Copernicus, Newton, Darwin and Einstein.

Ed 1980 Description Pages ISBN # The main objective of this volume is to honor Sir Harold Jeffreys for the major theoretical and applied contributions he made to Bayesian analysis. Leading experts in this field, S. Geisser, I. J. Good, and D. V. Lindley review and comment on these contributions to Bayesian inference, statistics, and the philosophy of science. E. T. Jaynes provides an analysis of and solution to the Dawid-Stone-Zidek marginalization paradox with discussion by A. P. Dawid, M. Stone, and J. V. Zidek. Other leading Bayesians have articles in the volume dealing with theoretical and applied topics in Bayesian analysis as well. Sir Harold's article, "Some General Points in Probability Theory," was written and included especially for this volume. Cloth/Paper C Reviews U.S. Dollars
