A moderate supporter of the French Revolution, he fled France during the Reign of Terror and again after the coup of Sept. 4, 1797. He befriended Johann von Goethe, J. C. F. von Schiller, and Johann von Herder. Returning to France after Napoleon Bonaparte (later Emperor Napoleon I) came to power, he wrote (1802) the widely read pamphlet, Vrai sens du vote national [the true meaning of the national vote], directed against Napoleon. The Relationship Between the Jordan Curve by Kelly Shelton Gulf Coast Community College November 2000 Camille Jordan was born in Lyon, France on January 5, 1838, and he lived his life devoted to mathematics. He published 120 papers in many areas of mathematics, including topology Topology was conceived in the 19 th century, and it is the study of geometrical properties that remain unaffected by manipulating the shape or size of the figures. Deforming the objects can be accomplished by bending, squeezing, stretching, and compressing, but not breaking or tearing the object. For example, a triangle is topologically equivalent to a circle because the triangle can be invariably shaped to become a circle. In the field of topology, Mr. Jordan discovered that a simple closed curve that does not cross itself divides the plane into two different areas: a region outside the curve and a region inside the curve. Also, Mr. Jordan stated that it is infeasible to go from one region to the other region without crossing the curve. Although this theorem, known as the

Jordan, Camille b. Jan. 5, 1838, Lyon, France d. Jan. 20, 1922, Milan, Italy Jordan's early research was in geometry. His (1870; "Treatise on Substitutions and Algebraic Equations"), which brought him the Poncelet Prize of the Academy of Sciences, gave a comprehensive account of Galois's theory of substitution groups and applied them to algebraic equations. He also solved the problem proposed by Niels Henrik Abel of ascertaining the solvability of any given algebraic equation by radicals. Jordan published his lectures and researches on analysis in 3 vol. (1882; "A Course of Analysis of the Polytechnic School"). In the third edition (1909-15) of this notable work, which contained a good deal more of Jordan's own work than did the first, he treated the theory of functions from the modern viewpoint, dealing with the function of bounded variation, which he applied to the curve known as Jordan's curve. The Jordan algebras are named in his honour. In topology Jordan proved (1887) that a simple arc does not divide the plane and that a simple closed curve divides the plane into exactly two parts. Although intuitively obvious, these theorems require sophisticated proofs.

document.write(""); JORDAN, CAMILLE under the name Joplin; and in 1888 Joplin was chartered as a city of the third class. The city derives its name from the creek, which was named in honour of the Rev. Harris G. Joplin (c. 1810—1847), a native of Tennessee. According to Strabo (xvi. ii.), who makes the strange mistake of saying that Jerusalem is visible from Joppa, the place was a resort of pirates. It was destroyed by Vespasian in the Jewish War (68). Tradition connects the story of Andromeda and the sea-monster with the sea-coast of Joppa, and in early times her chains were shown as well as the skeleton of the monster itself (Jos. Wars, iii. 9, 3). The site seems to have been shown even to some medieval pilgrims, and curious traces of it have been detected in modern Moslem legends. In the 5th and IIth centuries we bear from time to time of bishops of Joppa, under the metropolitan of Jerusalem. In 1126 the district was captured by the knights of St John, but lost to Saladin in 1187. Richard Cceur de Lion retook it in 1191, but it was finally retaken by Malek el ‘Adil in 1196. It languished for a time; in the 16th century it was an almost uninhabited ruin; but towards the end of the 17th century it began anew to develop as a seaport. In 1799 it was stormed by Napoleon; the fortifications were repaired and strengthened by the British. and German auspices. (R. A. S. M.)

En 1855, à dix-sept ans, il est reçu premier à l’ École polytechnique et sort de l’École des mines en 1861; il sera, du moins en titre, ingénieur chargé de la surveillance des carrières de Paris jusqu’en 1885, ce qui n’empêchera pas une intense activité de recherche mathématique.
