Excerpt Available Now in Hardcover Once Upon a Wedding by Kathleen Eagle Available July 8 from William Morrow CHAPTER 1 In all four chambers of her practical heart, Camille Delonga held that one of the surest ways of blowing a considerable pile of money was to hitch a girl’s dream onto the six-foot train of a woman’s wedding dress. The proof, in all its floral-scented glory, lay before her as she and her mother waited for their turn to be ushered to their seats in the church where the children of her friend for life, Bridget Mayfield, had been baptized. Camille had dutifully been there for both babies. The first one had yowled like a tomcat on the make, and Camille recalled wondering how Bridget could live with that noise. The second one, who would soon be walking down the aisle in another white dress, had taken to her christening spotlight like a Christmas cherub. Babies were looking downright darling to Camille by then, as were her own beach ball belly and the bad boy who’d promised to be her mate for life. Soon the belly had deflated, later the promise.

Once Upon A Wedding
by Kathleen Eagle, contemporary (2002)
Picture me doing my best Chris Tucker banshee shriek impersonation as I cry, "Rewind! Rewind!" all the way through Kathleen Eagle's latest novel Once Upon A Wedding . Her latest novel sees the meeting of two worlds: the Native American world meets the Southern Sisterhood thing. If you find the idea of a Divine Secrets Of The Native American Country Singing Ya-Ya Sisterhood thing repulsive to the extreme, you know what to do. Southern belle Camille Delonga always believe in moderation. Since her divorce from her Native American hubby Creed, she believes that the best weddings should be simple. Her mother Rosemary and she have finally made up after their bitter acrimony over Camille's marriage, but it may be too late as Rosie is dying of cancer. When Camille's daughter Jordan announces rather abruptly her upcoming nuptials to James, the Delonga women find themselves caught in the mad whirlwind that is wedding preparations. Camille wants simple. Simple? Yeah right. The mother of the bridegroom will probably never forget that Jordan dropped out of school, and worse, she's also the wedding planner (talk about practical marriages) and in the midst of a divorce to boot. Things don't look good. Rosemary wants to make a wedding dress for Jordan, but you know how things are. Granny - 18th century, Jordan - 21st century. But how can you tell no to a dying woman whose wedding gown may as well be her swan song in life?

JORDAN, THOMAS
under the name Joplin; and in 1888 Joplin was chartered as a city of the third class. The city derives its name from the creek, which was named in honour of the Rev. Harris G. Joplin (c. 1810—1847), a native of Tennessee. According to Strabo (xvi. ii.), who makes the strange mistake of saying that Jerusalem is visible from Joppa, the place was a resort of pirates. It was destroyed by Vespasian in the Jewish War (68). Tradition connects the story of Andromeda and the sea-monster with the sea-coast of Joppa, and in early times her chains were shown as well as the skeleton of the monster itself (Jos. Wars, iii. 9, 3). The site seems to have been shown even to some medieval pilgrims, and curious traces of it have been detected in modern Moslem legends. In the 5th and IIth centuries we bear from time to time of bishops of Joppa, under the metropolitan of Jerusalem. In 1126 the district was captured by the knights of St John, but lost to Saladin in 1187. Richard Cceur de Lion retook it in 1191, but it was finally retaken by Malek el ‘Adil in 1196. It languished for a time; in the 16th century it was an almost uninhabited ruin; but towards the end of the 17th century it began anew to develop as a seaport. In 1799 it was stormed by Napoleon; the fortifications were repaired and strengthened by the British. and German auspices. (R. A. S. M.)

The Last Good Man The Last True Cowboy A Mother's Gift The Night Remembers ... You Never Can Tell Once Upon a Wedding
by Kathleen Eagle (William Morrow, $24.95, G) ISBN 0-06-621472-6 There’s a billboard on I-75 near my house that reads “Loved the wedding. Invite me to the marriage. - God” It’s a terrific, and succinct, commentary on the common focus of The Wedding as the important event in a young woman’s life. Who cares if the bride and groom know how to settle an argument or make a budget? As long as the wedding is fit for a princess, everything’s rosy. Once Upon a Wedding suffers from the same over-focus, and here it’s done to death in conversation to boot. Camille Delonga has no sooner attended the planned-to-a-T wedding of her friend’s daughter than her own daughter, Jordan, springs a surprise on her: she’s engaged. And she wants a nice, albeit not too expensive, wedding. Camille wonders how she’ll pay for it all. As a metal sculptor, she’s self-sufficient, but hardly wealthy. Her ex-husband, Creed, hasn’t been heard from in over a year. Rosemary, her mother, is now living with her after cancer surgery. Camille plunges in and begins wedding preparations. Rosemary, a superb seamstress, offers to create Jordan’s wedding dress, which Jordan reluctantly accepts. Then Creed shows up, having been summoned by Jordan, and he and Camille can’t deny they are still attracted to one another. Meanwhile, Camille’s pal Bridget, having spent the better part of a year creating the wedding of her daughter’s dreams (and taking out a second or third mortgage to do so) is thrown for a loop when her husband asks for a divorce.

San Antonio's Camille Buffalo named repeat winner of UT Austin's Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition
AUSTIN, Texas Camille A. Buffalo, a senior in Virginia Gallegos' class at William H. Taft High School in San Antonio, won first place for the second consecutive year at the Third Annual Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition for her essay titled, "The Buffalo Soldiers: Trailblazers of Texas and the Western Frontier." Buffalo received $2,500 and a gold commemorative trophy at an awards ceremony Friday (April 17) at The University of Texas at Austin. "Camille's essay chronicled the exploits of the 9th and 10th U.S. Calvary and the work of the San Antonio Buffalo Soldiers Association, and was impressive from both the amount of research she conducted as well as the writing ability she displayed," said Terry Wilson, associate director of UT Austin's Office of Public Affairs and the organizer of the competition. San Antonio's William H. Taft High School also produced the second-place winner, Maile Malanchuck, who is a junior in Dr. Sarah Holden's class. Maile won $1,500 and received a silver commemorative trophy for her essay titled, "Bessie Coleman: The Skies are not Segregated," which reconstructs the historic efforts of Bessie Coleman, who earned fame and worldwide recognition for becoming the first African American to receive an international flying license.
