Abstract: Mark Kac introduced a method for calculating the distribution of the integral Av = R T v(X t )dt for a function v of a Markov process (X t ; t 0) and a suitable random time T , which yields the Feynman-Kac formula for the moment-generating function of Av . We review Kac's method, with emphasis on an aspect often overlooked. This is Kac's formula for moments of Av , which may be stated as follows. For any random time T such that the killed process (X t ; t ! T ) is Markov with... This article was developed in late 1996 for issue 12 ofHyphen magazine, a multi-arts and literary journal which waspublished two to three times per year in Chicago. Hyphen Publishing beganits life on the campus ofColumbia College Chicago in 1991 as a student-oriented operation. It was founded by Kimberly Bagwill and Eduardo Cruz Eusebio. Hyphenmagazine continued to be published until the end of 1996 when, due to financial duress, production anddistribution difficulties, it ceased. In the dozen or so issues which constituted Hyphen's life, the magazinematured from an occasional journal of friends' artworks and poems to asophisticated and critically aware magazine of poetry, performance art,new media arts, photography, and fiction. Hyphen's credo throughout itslifetime was to offer the best in locally (Chicago area) and nationallysignificant art in an accessible and intelligent format which thelayperson could understand. That goal was fully realized in Hyphen'sfinal issues under the editorial stewardship of Mark Ingebretsen. While Hyphen may have been challenged by controversy, it never backed down. Issue 11 featured performance artist Ron Athey and photographer AndresSerrano, twofamous artists blacklisted by the National Endowment of the Arts during the Reagan-Bush years. The Athey interview was conducted by photoartistBarbara de Genevieve who was herself blacklisted by the NEA. Other issuesfeatured: a round-table of "page" poets, those whose artisticoutput was most focussed on publishing, versus "stage" poets, principally performance-oriented, dramatic or charismatic poets of theslam movement; photography from Sarajevo showing the hunger for cultureduring the Bosnian Civil War; an intimate interview with Sandra Cisneros;coverage of the Last Poets, cyber critic Mark Amerika, and Negativland'srun-in with the law over sampling U2 and Casey Kasim; the breakthrough of poetryinto network television through Bob Holman's "United States ofPoetry"; and much, much more.

( Honours ) is from Dalhousie University in Halifax, and his M.Sc and Ph.D. (1987) were both completed at McGill University in Montreal. Mark's M.Sc. research was in elementary particle physics (or high energy physics) and his Ph.D. research was in string theory . During an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center he switched research fields to conformal field theory and related topics in mathematical physics (a fairly non-technical introduction to conformal field theory is: J. Cardy, Physics World, June, 1993, pg 29). Mark's research still focuses primarily on conformal field theory, but more recently emphasises its string theory applications. Wholly Holographic - Part 2 Eduardo Kac, Holopoetry and Beyond
Since the late 40's, holography's growth has not been limited to static images, it has also evolved into other art forms: holopoetry, holofiction and holovideo.

From Other Guides Holography in High School Holopoetry and Holo-Fiction While the world was witnessing the first transmission of a hologram in the early 60's, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was bringing forth an artist/writer who would change the form of poetry: Eduardo Kac . In the late 70's, Kac joined the twentieth century experimental poetry movement. He stretched our perception of linguistic form into a multi-dimensional journey: a word became visual, gathered movement, and crossed dimensional boundaries.

Colleges, voordrachtenseries, cursussen e.d. HPOPT 2000: 5th International Conference on High Performance Optimization Techniques Date/location: June 7-9, 2000; Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Aim of the Conference: HPOPT 2000 will take place in the context of the Dutch research project 'High Performance Models for Mathematical Optimization'. In this project, funded by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), research teams cooperate from four universities in the Netherlands: Delft University of Technology, Erasmus University, Eindhoven University of Technology, and University of Utrecht. The aim of the conference is to bring together some of the most active researchers working on the design and implementation of optimization algorithms. We aim to cover the latest algorithmic developments, complexity results and implementation aspects, including the required tools from numerical algebra. Much attention will be given to the recent developments in semidefinite optimization and its relevance for a wide range of practical applications in fields such as combinatorial optimization, engineering design, matrix inequalities in systems and control theory, and matrix completion problems. Here is the abstract for the series of three lectures: The discovery of quasicrystals in the early eighties has triggered an intensive investigation of the various kinds of ordered states that are possible between periodic and random. In this series of lectures, I plan to describe the impact that quasicrystals had, focusing specifically of aspects of diffraction theory. In the first lecture, I will start with the history of the field and summarize how and why quasicrystals challenged our understanding of the solid state. Some generalizations of crystallographic tools will be described that are suitable to cope with symmetry and equivalence concepts in this more general situation. In the second lecture, I plan to survey mathematical diffraction theory, with special emphasis on the perfectly ordered systems. Of particular interest are point sets (representing atomic positions) which lead to pure point diffraction spectra, whose classification is far from complete. In the third lecture, I will approach the diffraction of stochastic structures (such as random tilings) with methods from statistical physics. These systems show a variety of different spectral properties, including the possibility of practically relevant examples with singular continuous spectra. Comments on G. Polya 's "Bemerkung uber die integraldarstellung der Riemannschen zeta-funktion"
("Remarks on the integral representation of Riemann's zeta function") Mark Kac [from Pólya, G., Collected Papers, vol. II: Locations of Zeros (R.P. Boas, ed.), MIT Press, 1974] Although this beautiful paper takes one to within a hair's breadth of Riemann's hypothesis it does not seem to have inspired much futher work and references to it in the subsequent mathematical literature are rather scant. Because of this it may be of interest to relate that the paper did play a small, but perhaps not wholly negligible, part in the development of an interesting and important chapter in Statistical Mechanics. In the fall of 1951 and the spring of 1952 C.N. Yang and T.D. Lee were developing their theory of phase transitions which has since become justly celebrated. To illustrate the theory they introduced the concept of a "lattice gas" and they were led to a remarkable conjecture which (not quite in its most general form) can be stated as follows. [mathematical text to be inserted - conjecture] When I first heard of this conjecture I tried the simplest case [mathematical text to be inserted] and somehow Hilfsatz II of Pólya's paper came to mind.
