Bassoon Record Reviews Mozart: Bassoon Concerto, Clarinet Concerto (Thunemann, bsn.; Friedli, cl.; Zucher Kammerorchester; de Stoutz, cond.). Claves CD 50-8205 3600 Thun, Switzerland). Klaus Thunemann, probably the most active recording bassoonist today, has finally turned his attention to the K. 191. A sprightly rendition which compares favorably with recent releases by John Miller and Yoshiyuki Nakanishi, this version contains all of Thunemann's trademarks: flashy fingers, a good sense of melodic line and a big, vibrant tone. The three cadenzas are uncredited (one assumes that they are by Thunemann) and in the first one there is even a deja-entendu bow in the direction of another great German bassoonist, Walter Guetter. A tasteful clarinet concerto by Berne Symphony principal Thomas Friedli rounds out this fine CD. Rating: 2 1/2 CROWS Rossini: Six Quartets (Consortium Classicum). Dabringhaus und Grimm 1207 (Milsenweg 9, 4930 Detmold, W. Germany). The six Rossini quartets have had an interesting history: originally conceived for two violins, violoncello and contrabass, five of the six were published in 1825/6. In 1828/9 four of those five were published in a new incarnation as flute quartets. It was left up to the undeservedly-obscure Friedrich Berr (who ran away from his German home at sixteen, joined the French infantry as a bassoonist and later became professor of clarinet at the Paris Conservatory) to arrange them in the form we know today. The playing of Wolfgang Dunschede (flute), Dieter Klocker (clarinet), Klaus Wollendorf (horn) and Karl-Otto Hartmann (bassoon) is first-rate throughout, in an extremely flattering acoustical ambiance. Hartmann in particular is a joy, with his sure fingers and dark-chocolate tone. This has to be considered the definitive collection of Rossini quartets, and well worth the trouble of tracking it down.

List of 20 th and 21 st Centuries Composers
For music of the 20th and 21st centuries, libraries may choose from three categories in the HARRASSOWITZ Composers List. These categories are determined by the prominence of the composer's publisher, the frequency of performance and recording of the composer's work, prizes, awards and commissions received by the composer, and coverage in the musicological literatur.
Category 1 well known and prominent composers Category 2 less well known and established composers Category 3 emerging composers with little performance or recording Not categorized: minor, uncategorized composers Libraries may alternatively create their individual composers list by choosing composers from any of the three categories as well as uncategorized composers. The Composers List is updated annually and also can be found in our brochure featuring the HARRASSOWITZ European Music Scores Approval Plan and Form Selection Program. Hungary: NATO Wants More Than Words During Yugoslav Campaign
By Michael J. Jordan Budapest, 8 June 1999 (RFE/RL) Ask the average Hungarian about history, and he will likely recount the centuries of suffering at the hands of foreign invaders. Thus, when Hungary joined NATO in March, it seemed motivated less by the desire to join the "winning" side of the Cold War than by the wish for a future of guaranteed security. Therefore, it was a cruel irony when, just 12 days after Hungary's induction, NATO launched its first air strikes against Yugoslavia. Hungary was de facto at war with its southern neighbor. While the public generally supports the NATO air campaign and the free use of Hungarian air space, recent opinion polls show a solid two-thirds of the public opposes any attack from Hungarian soil. An even larger number resist the possible use of Hungarian troops in either a ground offensive or peacekeeping mission. But with NATO prodding Hungary to meet its alliance obligations, while dangling the carrot of a significant role in post-war reconstruction of the Balkans, the Hungarian leadership consented to the first launch of NATO aircraft from Hungarian air bases. Last month, 20 of 24 U.S. Marine F/A-18 Hornets arrived in southern Hungary. Equipped with laser-guided bombs, the Hornets began flying combat missions late last month. Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi, commenting during an inspection of the U.S. F-18s, said that "This is exactly the kind of NATO we wanted to join 10 years ago, one that stands for a certain set of values".

I am wondering who was Grebe of the Grebe Point.
Which is that point? Well...It is the Symmedian Point, aka Lemoine Point.
Peter Baptist [1] wrote a paper on its history but I haven't seen it.
The name of Grebe is sporadically mentioned in the Triangle Geometry
Literature.
Le theoreme de Grebe (1ere demostration 1847): une construction du point
de Lemoine.
K: point de Lemoine du triangle ABC. K est parfois appele point de Grebe
du triangle ABC. [2, p. 160]
Honsberger writes: In Britain and France this point [:Symmedian Point] is also called the Lemoine point, and in Germany it is also called Grebe's point. You will find the early history and an extensive account of this point in two articles by John MacKay [3, p. 57]

Call for Papers 13th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming (ILP 2003) Szeged, Hungary September 29 - October 1, 2003 http://www.rgai.hu/ilp2003 The 13th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming (ILP 2003), organized by the Department of Informatics at the University of Szeged, will be held in Szeged, Hungary, September 29 - October 1, 2003. ILP 2003 will follow ECML/PKDD-2003 held in Dubrovnik, Croatia (September 22 - 26, 2003), and will be co-located with the Kalmar Workshop on Logic and Computer Science devoted to the work of Laszlo Kalmar and to recent results in logic and computer science (October 1 - 2, 2003). The ILP conference series, started in 1991, was originally designed to provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest research results in all areas of learning logic programs. In keeping with this tradition, while reflecting also the broadening scope of the field, authors are invited to submit papers presenting original results in all aspects of learning logic programs, as well as multi-relational learning and data mining, learning in first-order logic and in other (non-propositional) logic-based knowledge representation frameworks. Typical, but not exclusive, topics of interest for submissions include * theoretical aspects (logical foundations, computational/statistical learning theory, specialization and generalization operators, etc.) of learning in logic (logic programs, constraint logic programs, Datalog, first-order logic, description logics, higher-order logic, etc.), * algorithmic aspects of learning in logic including the design of algorithms along with theoretical and/or empirical analysis, probabilistic and statistical approaches, distance and kernel-based methods, relational reinforcement learning, etc., * learning and data mining from multi-relational databases, scalability issues, inductive databases, link discovery, * learning and data mining from structured (e.g., labeled graphs, tree patterns) and semi-structured data (e.g., XML documents), multi-instance learning, * efficient implementations and practical applications of multi-relational learning and data mining in bioinformatics, computational chemistry, computational linguistics, relational text and web mining, medical informatics, spatial data mining, etc. Papers emphasizing new topics related to learning in logic and multi-relational data mining are especially encouraged. Important Dates: ================ This year, authors are required to submit a paper title and a short abstract of about 200 words before submitting the paper. Titles and short abstracts due: May 11, 2003 Papers due: May 18, 2003 Author notification: June 23, 2003 Camera-ready copies due: July 9, 2003 ILP 2003 Conference: September 30 - October 1, 2003 Proceedings: ============ The proceedings of the conference will be published by Springer Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence subseries of LNCS. We also plan to publish revised versions of selected papers in a journal special issue. Submission Information: ======================= Papers must be written in English and should be no longer than 18 pages in Springer's LNCS/LNAI style. The cover page should include the paper title, each author's name, affiliation, and e-mail address, as well as the corresponding author's name, phone and fax numbers, a list of keywords, and an abstract of about 200 words. Only electronic submissions in PDF or PostScript file format will be accepted. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that the file is printable. All submissions will be acknowledged shortly after receipt. For further details and guidelines on paper submission please visit the ILP 2003 website above and also http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html. Simultaneous Submissions: ========================= This year, simultaneous submissions to ECML/PKDD-2003 are allowed, provided this fact is clearly indicated on the submission form. Accepted papers will appear in the ILP 2003 conference proceedings only if they are withdrawn from publishing in the proceedings of ECML/PKDD-2003. Simultaneous submissions that are not clearly specified as such will be rejected. Short Presentations: ==================== ILP 2003 will have a session of short, 5-10 minutes presentations. This session is intended for descriptions of work in progress, student projects, open problems and research issues, as well as new application challenges. Papers being published elsewhere are also suitable. Papers submitted to this session should be no longer than 10 pages and must be received by August 10, 2003. Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by August 25, 2003. Papers accepted for this session will appear electronically and/or in a technical report.
