Myself when young did eagerly frequent Doctor and Saint, and heard great Argument About it and about; but evermore Came out by the same Door as in I went. With them the Seed of Wisdom did I sow, And with my own hand labour'd it to grow: And this was all the Harvest that I reap'd - 'I came like Water and like Wind I go.' Omar Khayyam I've been debating with myself over whose name to list as the author of this famous poem. While it's true that Omar Khayyam himself was the originator of the Rubaiyat's far from simple philosophy (and of the wonderfully bewitching exposition thereof), it's also true that Edward Fitzgerald's translation is what gives the poem its unique 'atmosphere' (to readers in English, at least) - the two are (in the minds of most reviewers) inseparable. Oh well. For the sake of consistency [1], I'll go with Old Khayyam. thomas. [1] with the previous set of excerpted verses, at poem #162 PS. The URL above also has biographies of both poet and translator, a summary of Khayyam's philosophy, and Fitzgerald's own notes to the second edition of his translation. Oh, and some commentary by the two of us, of course :-)

Ghiyas al-Din Abul Fath Umar ibn Ibrahim Khayyam Nishapuri Written by Iraj Bashiri Khayyam's dates of birth and death are reported differently by various authorities. The dates for his birth range from 1021 to 1048 and for his death from 1122 to 1131. Son of a tent maker, Khayyam was a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet. He was also skilled in medicine and music. His corpus of works, consisting of two works in physics, four in mathematics, five in philosophy, and one each in geography, astronomy, history, and music reflects his wide range of interest in the sciences and the arts. He knew Arabic and Persian. Of the works mentioned above eight are in Arabic and two in Perso-Tajik. Khayyam completed his elementary education in Balkh under Muhammad Mansur. By the age of seventeen he was well-versed in the sciences of his time. He spent the next nine years in Samarqand and Bukhara becoming acquainted with the philosophy of the masha'is, especially with the works of Ibn-i Sina. Two of his early works on mathematics"Mushkilat al-Hisab," dealing with the general rules governing the positive roots of numbers and "Sharh-i Mushkil min Kitab al-Musiqi," dealing with music from a mathematical standpointare mentioned in his later work "Risala fi al-Barahin ala Masa'il al-Jabr wa al-Muqabila." This work, which was written in the 1070's at the court of the Qara Khanid king Shams al-Muluk (1068-1079), established Khayyam's fame outside of Bukhara and Khurasan. In fact, it brought him in the purview of the Saljuq court of Isfahan.

- Return to top of the page - Our Assessment: B- : while perhaps truer to Khayyam, this translation is uneven and not entirely satisfactory. See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review The Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam is generally known in the translation(s) created by Edward FitzGerald in the nineteenth century. It is generally acknowledged that, for all their capturing the spirit of Khayyam's originals and so on, they are not truly faithful to the Persian verses. In addition, FitzGerald worked from a specific manuscript, which included verses that are now considered certainly not to have been by Khayyam. In an attempt to offer a truer picture of Khayyam's poetry Peter Avery and John Heath-Stubbs presented this version in 1979 (now available as a Penguin Classics paperback). It differs from FitzGerald's in that it contains considerably more verses (235 quatrains, as opposed to less than half as many in Fitz's versions), that the order differs (making comparison difficult), and that they try to be more faithful to the original Persian. This book also offers a thirty page introduction by Peter Avery, addressing many of the questions about the ruba'i form, Omar Khayyam, and his times, though many questions we had remained unanswered there. In particular, there is little explanation of their differences with FitzGerald, which we would have found useful.

Awake! for Morning in the Bowl of Night
Has flung the Stone that puts the Stars to Flight:
And Lo! the Hunter of the East has caught
The Sultan's Turret in a Noose of Light.
Dreaming when Dawn's Left Hand was in the Sky
I heard a Voice within the Tavern cry,
"Awake, my Little ones, and fill the Cup
"Before Life's Liquor in its Cup be dry."
And, as the Cock crew, those who stood before
The Tavern shouted"Open then the Door! "You know how little while we have to stay, "And, once departed, may return no more." Now the New Year reviving old Desires, The thoughtful Soul to Solitude retires, Where the WHITE HAND OF MOSES on the Bough Puts out, and Jesus from the Ground suspires. Iram indeed is gone with all its Rose, And Jamshyd's Sev'n-ring'd Cup where no one knows; But still the Vine her ancient Ruby yields, And still a Garden by the Water blows. And David's Lips are lock't; but in divine
