ONE-OH-NINE Messerschmitt's Killing Machine The notoriety that it gained as the backbone of the Luftwaffe 's fighter force is barely half the story of Willy Messerschmitt's ubiquitous creation. By Jon Guttman for Aviation History Magazine Few arguments are more futileyet more perennially enticingthan the question of which was the greatest fighter of World War II. What criterion does one use to define "great?" Performance? Versatility? Combat record? Don't ask veteran fighter pilots to settle the matter. They have their own opinions, best expressed by the late Soviet ace of aces Ivan Kozhedub's answer to the question: "The La-7. I hope you understand why." The Lavochkin La-7 was indisputably a great fighter. More important, it was his fighter.

primary force behind the Nazi ideas and practices of racial superiority, sterilization, and genocide had their direct roots in the theories and practices of modern psychiatric eugenic theories. This is very timely in importance because modern psychiatry is once again traveling down a similar road promoting the validity of genetics, race, biochemistry, biopsychiatry and brain chemistry. The same ideas which directly led to and justified the Nazi atrocities never disappeared but were cloaked in different nomenclature and exist today. Fundamentally it's a case of ignoring and denying the mind of Man while placing all importance on biology, chemistry, genetics and the environment (i.e. behaviorism). To find out how easy it is to place an order, follow the spider to the Order Information Page KATE WILHELM writes tip top legal suspense novels, all of which I missed out on when they were first published because I thought of her as a sci-fi writer only. After I happened on one of her legal thrillers, I ordered the others immediately. She is a writer of wide ranging talents, turning her hand to mainstream fiction, psychological suspense and humor as well as science fiction (for which she has won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards) and our favorite, mystery. She is less well known in our field but is as good, if not better than, the other two big legal thriller writers, Barbara Parker and Nancy Taylor Rosenberg. If this is your genre, don't miss these excellent books.

appeared in 1991 introducing her main character Barbara Holloway, an Oregon attorney who, though she had stopped practicing five years earlier, is still "death qualified," able to defend clients facing the death penalty. The novel opens with the plight of a mental patient who seems to be on a work release program on a college campus, heavily drugged and closely supervised by a psychiatrist. The patient, who is called "Tom" (though he knows this is not his real name) has begun palming his medication, and fragments of a former life are drifting back to him. From this intriguing beginning, a major courtroom battle develops for Barbara, who is asked for legal assistance by her lawyer father.

Recently in the coastal city of Netanya, an Islamic militant with explosives strapped to his body blew himself to pieces, killing himself and five Israelis at a mall entrance.
Less than a block away, beyond the police barrier, people went about their usual daily routine. A man was having his haircut. People sat at outdoor cafes. Children smiled and ate ice cream. The lives of ordinary people continue with a jerky, forced sense of normality.
A few hours after the attack in Netanya, further south along the coast in Tel Aviv, aging hippies and young hipsters gathered on the beach as the sun set. Hundreds of feverish partiers surged around a group of people pounding on African drums. A woman waved her arms, chanting in a strange language and let out a warbling scream. It’s a weekly ritual, one that continues and has perhaps become more important after an eight month Palestinian uprising that caught many Israelis by surprise. As the bloodletting worsens, the insistence on sticking to daily routines intensifies — a veil stretched across a an increasingly grim reality: there is no end in sight to the street battles, killings and bomb attacks.
The normality of life during war is something I didn’t expect to find when I came to Jerusalem in January as an intern for the Associated Press. Five months later I’m working here fulltime and I still don’t have a clue how to express the complexity of the place — its pluralistic society, its history, its culture, its war — least of all in a news story.

Karl Theodor Wilhelm Weierstrass
Karl Weierstrass's father became a tax inspector when Karl was eight years old. This job involved him in only spending short periods in any one place so Karl frequently moved from school to school as the family moved around Prussia. In 1829, Weierstrass entered the Gymnasium in Paderborn. Weierstrass excelled at the Gymnasium despite having to take on a part-time job as a bookkeeper to help out the family finances. Though Weierstrass showed promise in mathematics, his father wished him to study finance. So after graduating from the Gymnasium in 1834, he entered the University of Bonn with a course planned out for him which included the study of law, finance and economics. Weierstrass was torn between the subject he loved and the subject his father wanted for him, and he spent 4 years of intensive fencing and drinking. In 1841, Weierstrass had taken the necessary oral examinations and he began as a teacher. He wrote three short papers in 1841 and 1842 which contained the concepts on which he based his theory of functions of a complex variable in later years. He taught at various schools in Germany. As a teacher of mathematics he was required to teach other topics too, and he taught physics, botany, geography, history, German, calligraphy and even gymnastics. Weierstrass published a full version of his theory of inversion of hyperelliptic integrals in his next paper in 1856. Now there was a move from a number of universities to offer him a chair, and he accepted one from the Industry Institute in Berlin, follwed quickly by one at the University of Berlin.

Wilhelm Keitel , the son of a landowner, was born in Hanover on 22nd September 1882. He joined the German Army and in 1902 became a second lieutenant in the 46th Field Artillery. Keitel had reached the rank of captain by the outbreak of the First World War . In September 1914 Keitel was seriously wounded by a shell splinter. After returning to duty he became a battery commander before being appointed to the General Staff in March 1915. He also served as an officer with XIX Reserve Corps (1916-17) and the 199th Infantry Division (1917) before returning to the General Staff in Berlin in December 1917. After the war Keitel was a member of the right-wing terrorist Freikorps group and served on the frontier with Poland in 1919. He remained in the army and spent three years as an instructor at the School of Cavalry at Hanover (1920-23). This was followed by a spell with the 6th Artillery Regiment.

http://www.hyperreal.org/wsb/black-rider.html
A Few Words About The Black Rider
The Black Rider tale probably originates with a work of German romantic literature known as "Gespensterbuch," published in 1811. It is, however, a universal story - one of a vast body of sagas of men who make questionable arrangements with Satan. Most famously told in Carl Maria Von Weber's opera, Der Freischutz - which featured an altered (happy) ending - The Black Riders latest telling is a dark, symbolic and comedic affair. The original story concerns a clerk, Wilhelm, who is in love with Katchen, daughter of the old forester, Kuno. Kuno wishes his daughter to marry a hunter. Katchen insists that a marksmanship contest be held to determine the finest hunter, hoping that Wilhelm might thus have a chance to win. Wilhelm, however cannot hit the broad side of a barn - until he is approached by a "dark horseman" called Pegleg. Pegleg arranges to give Wilhelm some "magic bullets," mysteriously guaranteed to hit anything Wilhelm aims at -except for one bullet, which Pegleg earmarks for his own purposes. Wilhelm wins the initial contest, and his bride's hand, but another shooting match is scheduled for their wedding day. Wilhelm asks Pegleg, who bears a suspicious resemblance to a leading citizen of the netherworld, for that last, unused bullet. Firing at a wooden dove, Wilhelm instead thanks to the cursed bullet - slays his bride. In Freischutz, divine intervention prevents Wilhelm from killing his bride, and he gets off the hook with a stern warning about dealing with the devil. In the Robert Wilson-directed rendition of the story, Wilhelm ends up raving mad, another strait-jacketed lunatic in Hell's traveling carnival. The final scene is of Pegleg, sleek in a tuxedo singing a mock-sentimental song written by Waits, "The Last Rose of Summer" which beings, "I love the way/The tattered cloud/Go wind across the sky..."

Abstract
  • Killing Fields: The Wehrmacht and the Holocaust in Belorussia, 1941-1942
  • H Heer Trans C Scherer Hamburger Institute fur Sozialforschung, Germany ABSTRACT This contribution shows that during the invasion of the Soviet Union the Wehrmacht was systematically involved in the realization of the Holocaust. Its regional and field commands in the summer of 1941 erected the first ghettos and robbed the Jews of their possessions, their rights, and their dignity as humans. Units of the Wehrmacht concentrated Jews from the villages and shot them. The author advances evidence that during the first wave of ghetto liquidations in October-November 1941, German soldiers served as willing executioners in the provincial towns of that part of Belorussia under civil administration. All these murderous actions were foreshadowed in the slogan propagandized from the beginning of the campaign, 'The Jew is the Partisan, and the Partisan is the Jew.' In a report on the Jewish question dated January 25, 1942 (it also noted the murder of 9,000 Jews) the Gebietskommissar Pages: Part of the OUP Holocaust and Genocide Studies WWW service

There is considerable internal evidence in the Constitution, and external evidence in the other writings of the authors of the Constitution, to support the contention that the creators of the Republic were versatile in their handling of language and very precise in their usage. One would assume that when they wrote "no laws" they meant "no laws." Nonetheless, the U.S. Supreme Court sits every year and determines, in various cases, if certain laws abridging freedom of speech and of the press are or are not in violation of the Constitution. As the late justice Hugo Black said sardonically on one occasion, the majority opinion of the Court appears to be that "no laws" means "some laws." It was with some horror, and considerable indignation, then, that I reacted to the news, in 1957, that the U.S. Government had seized all the scientific books and papers of Dr. Wilhelm Reich and burned them in an incinerator in New York City. This was only twelve years after the U.S. had fought a prolonged and bitter war against Nazi Germany and I had been raised on anti-Nazi propaganda in which the Nazi "crime against freedom" in burning books had been stressed as much as their crimes against humanity in killing people. I was astounded and flabbergasted that the U.S. government was imitating its former enemy to the extent of actually burning scientific papers it found heretical.

The question is, what are you going to do about it?” I. Appearance The years have not been kind with Master Wilhelm Bhes. At the age of 77, he suffers from rheumatism, and seems to be much shorter than he really is. Wilhelm cannot walk or even stand properly without using a cane. This cane, unlike the stylish and often magical instruments used by many Glantrian wizards, is a simple piece of wood with many bulges and cracks. It is a wonder that it even supports his wait. Wilhelm has long but thin gray hair. It is sometimes tied back with a simple knot, but still some hair tends to cover parts of his face. While talking, he constantly tries to blow the renegade strands from his mouth. Wilhelm also has hair in other awkward places on his body. Hair often sprouts from the top of his collar and from the bottom of his sleeves, and students at the Great School often claim he is a werewolf. (He is not.) Wilhelm has a long eagle like nose and small blue eyes. Wilhelm dresses in gray and brown old robes. In winter, he also adds a fur of some unknown creature from the north. If one would only judge Wilhelm Bhes with one’s eyes, one might think that this man is an over-ambitious peasant. But in Glantri, judging someone by his or her appearance is a serious mistake.

    Sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff
    by Dr. William Pierce
What's said to be the most expensive motion picture ever made was released a few weeks ago and has been earning record money at the box office. The film, of course, is Titanic, and it's about the sinking of the ocean liner S.S. Titanic on April 15, 1912, with the loss of 1,513 lives, after the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. There are many superlatives in the film. The Titanic was the largest ship ever built at the time. It also was the most luxurious ship, intended to provide high-speed trans-Atlantic transportation in comfort for the rich and pampered. The implication of the film is that the sinking of the Titanic is the greatest maritime disaster of all time. I'm sure that the great majority of the American public believes that to be the case, but it isn't. Everyone has heard about the sinking of the Titanic, and very few have heard about the sinking of the S.S. Wilhelm Gustloff, which was the greatest maritime disaster.

Paul Gliedt was born in that stormy month. 1884 was also the year that Mark Twain published "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", and the Yankee Robinson and Ringling Brothers Great Double Show, Circus and Caravan opened in Barbaboo, WI with Yankee Robinson proclaiming, "This show is destined to become the greatest circus on earth". That same year saw the development of products such as the first ink-storing pen and the first machine gun. By the end of 1884, the first electric street cars were operating in Cleveland, OH; the first steel skyscraper, the Home Life Insurance Building, was completed in Rochester, NY; and the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition opened in New Orleans. The setting for the beginning of this chapter remains the German community located on Columbia Bottom section of St. Ferdinand Township, St. Louis Co., MO. Gottlieb and Hanne had lived on the Columbia Bottom, the fertile, river bottom land where the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers merged in St. Louis, since their marriage in 1869. Paul's father rented farm land in this locale and raised produce to sell at the market in the city of St. Louis. For most of the time, his parents were probably content living here or they wouldn't have stayed so long. They were Communicant members of the nearby St. Petri's

Begun at Dagger Point for the benefit of whoever finds this so that they may know of the courage of the Light of Justice I am a noble of the 8th house of Keolund. I am the 3rd son of the Duke of Farthung and 65th in line for the throne of Keolund. I was trained as a knight during his youth and chose the cavalry as my profession. I adhere the the horseman's ideals of speed, honor and victory in combat. After I finished my training, I was put in charge of a division of my father's cavalry and spent most of my time on the local constabulary enforcing the edicts of my father and keeping order in the Duchy. I ended up devoting much time to the then thief, local hero, and arch-rival of mine, Kyrie. Not that Kyrie was a true enemy. She did not steal from loyal Keolundi citizens, rather she stole from the Hold of the Sea Princes to the south. I had to chase her due to pacts and treaties with the Hold, so it was a friendly rivalry of mutual respect. Too bad she saw the onslaugh of the Scarlet Brotherhood before my father did, maybe the battle would have turned out better. While riding with The Light of Justice, I have attmpted to distiguish myself in battle as an accomplished cavalryman. My favorite weapon is the sabre; my favorite battle tactic is the "Cossack's Charge." In this manuver a horseman comes in at top speed on his light war horse and slices the head off of his enemy. There have been useful in a few enounters.
