Discrete Mathematics
We recognize that there are many beautiful and useful ideas in discrete mathematics appropriate for K-12 students, but do not feel qualified to determine whether or not there should be a separate strand in the area. Standard 12: Discrete Mathematics of the NCTM Curriculum and Evaluation Standards [NCTM 1989], which you suggested for our review, includes a short list of topics for grades 9-12, including matrices. Some middle school classes already incorporate matrices in a useful way. We do not what was meant by "problems associated with computer validation". We have been unhappy to learn that some students taking geometry in high school have had lots of experience with computer software that allows them to develop conjectures but no training at all in mathematical proofs in geometry. We note that Mathematics 2, Japanese Grade 11 [Kodaira 1991, vol. 9], which is described as the easier of the electives offered in that grade and taken by 40% of the students includes one chapter on arithmetic and geometric progressions and another on computers and flowcharts. The other 60% take two more extensive courses in mathematics, one on Basic Analysis, Japanese Grade 11 [Kodaira 1991, vol. 11], which includes mathematical induction.

Summary:
1456 NOTICES OF THE AMS VOLUME 45, NUMBER 11 Kunihiko Kodaira was friend and teacher for me. My wife and I re- member our last visit to the Kodairas' house in Tokyo. He was work- ing at the kitchen table on textbooks for sec- ondary schools. Seiko Kodaira had to push the papers away when preparing the meal. In 1995 I congratulated him on his eightieth birthday. He answered in his charming way. But when we came to Tokyo in 1996, he was already in the hospital. Following Severi, Kodaira introduces the numerical characteristic a(Vn ) by the formula (1) a(Vn ) =gn(Vn) gn 1(Vn )+: : :+( 1) n 1 g1(Vn ); where gi (Vn) is the dimension of the space of holomorphic differentials of degree i. Keywords: Collected, applications, connected, structure, Sci, AMS, V0, analytic, classes, America, algebraic varieties collabo, structed algebraic surfaces, Kodaira vanishing theorem, projective algebraic manifolds, analytic fiber bundle, projective space Theorem

106.1 Introduction
I am still hoping that somebody will volunteer to take over the editing and producing of my parts of the IMUCC [this introduction, the sections on deaths of mathematicians and honours awarded to mathematicians, and the final short paragraph]. The work involved takes about 400 hours a year, and is well rewarded by the gratitude of the mathematical community worldwide. Please continue to send information on meetings to Dr David Easdown, Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Sydney, NSW 2006, AUSTRALIA [de@maths.usyd.edu.au] (or to me), and on visitors to Australasia to the Editor of the Australian Mathematical Society GAZETTE, Mr Basil R. Benjamin, Institute of Mathematics, University of South Australia, The Levels, SA 5095, AUSTRALIA [austms.gazette@unisa.edu au] for publication in that GAZETTE. Please send information on visitors to New Zealand also to Dr David McIntyre, Department of Mathematics, University of Auckland, Private Bag 92019 Auckland, NEW ZEALAND [mcintyre@math.auckland.ac.nz], for publication in the Newsletter of the New Zealand Mathematical Society.
