Ivars Peterson's MathLand December 23, 1996 Prime Theorem of the Century "Prime numbers have always fascinated mathematicians," Underwood Dudley of DePauw University in Indiana wrote in a 1978 textbook. "They appear among the integers seemingly at random, and yet not quite: There seems to be some order or pattern, just a little below the surface, just a little out of reach." A prime is a whole number (other than 1) that is divisible only by itself and 1. That simple definition leads to the following sequence of numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, and so on. As the numbers of the sequence increase, the intervals between primes, on the average, get longer, though in a somewhat haphazard way. In other words, primes gradually become more scarce as numbers get larger, and one can imagine that, at some point, they might run out. More than 2,000 years ago, however, the Greek mathematician Euclid proved that the sequence of primes continues forever. Suppose there is a finite number of primes, he argued. That means there's also a largest prime. Multiply all the primes together, then add 1. The new number is certainly bigger than the largest prime. If the initial assumption is correct, the new number can't be a prime. Otherwise, it would be the largest. Hence, it must be a composite number and divisible by a smaller number. However, because of the way the number was constructed, all known primes, when divided into the new number, leave a remainder of 1. Therefore, the initial assumption can't be correct, and there can be no largest prime.

Posted on this web page with permission from Robert H. Mast. Marian Kramer is the president of the National Welfare Rights Union and co-president of the national Up and Out of Poverty Now! campaign. She's a Louisiana native with a long history of activism in the civil rights struggles in the South. In the late '60s I worked for the West Central Organization [WCO] in Detroit. It was a community-based organization modeled after the Alinsky style of organizing. It was in the Wayne State University area, around Grand River and Trumbull, where urban renewal was happening. I was one of the people who was heavily involved in the fight to save that community, and make sure that the city, state, and federal governments respected the community's plans. It taught me how to be a community organizer. Around 1967, folks like General Baker and Glanton Dowdell who worked at Dodge Main started coming around to WCO. Dowdell painted the Black Madonna, that beautiful picture that hangs in Reverend Cleage's Shrine of the Black Madonna on Linwood. They were putting out leaflets from DRUM [Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement]. We also had started to read The Inner City Voice [ICV] . I got recruited to help type up articles for the paper and started hanging out at the ICV office on Grand River across from the Trade Union Leadership Conference. The printers in the city refused to print the ICV. They'd get the "blue flu." So a decision was made to take over

Massimino History of Mathematics Rutgers, Spring 2000 Throughout the history of mathematics, branches of scientific study have regularly used mathematical methods to explain natural phenomena. This is very true in the field of astronomy, and particularly in the case of celestial mechanics . Celestial mechanics is defined as the branch of astronomy dealing with the mathematical theory of the motions of celestial bodies. The curiosities of celestial mechanics date back in to ancient times. The ancient Greeks, for instance, gave divine status to the cosmos, and therefore felt the need for further exploration. At this time, astrology established itself and became a part of everyday life. The principle that stars could influence man's life "...received some kind of justification from the notion of cosmos, a cosmos which is so well arranged that no part is independent of the other parts and of the whole. Was this not proved by the tides, caused by Moon and Sun, by the menstruation of women, by the farmers' moonlore... (Sarton, 165)." During the third century BC, Aristarchos of Samos combined Euclidean geometry with the assumption that the Sun is the center of the "universe" rather than the Earth . In his model the planets circle the Sun, the Moon orbits the Earth, and the stars are fixed, while their apparent "rotation" is an illusion caused by the Earth's rotation. This heliocentric model was later reaffirmed by Nicholas Copernicus (c. 1520).

This sensitive writer and director fashions out of his memory and imagination an affecting story about a courageous widow, her extended family, and their struggle for survival during hard times. The evocative cinematography of Nestor Almendros captures and conveys the abiding beauty and simplicity of rural life in a small community. The time is the 1930s. Although many farmers have lost their land because of the Depression and some have been left so destitute they must live in their cars, the Spalding family has been spared. Royce (Ray Baker) is the sheriff of Waxahachie; he lives with his wife Edna (Sally Field) and their two children on a 40-acre farm outside of town. A pious man, he gives thanks to God before their Sunday meal and is then called away from the table on an emergency: a young black boy has gotten drunk and is shooting off a gun down by the railroad tracks. Just as the boy is about to hand the weapon over to the sheriff, it accidentally fires. Royce is hit and dies immediately. Edna and her children's lives are upended; they will have to learn how to live with the difficult.

Olley Bell Kramer ObituaryFebruary 8, 1930 Mrs. Frank KRAMER Died Saturday In Sterling Mrs. Olley Bell (Cochran ) Kramer, wife of Frank Kramer, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. B. Detweiler, in Sterling, at 1:45 a.m. Feb. 8, 1930, of bronchitis and arthrytis (sic), her sickness being of about four months duration. Everything that loving hands and tender care could do for her, was done, but of no avail. Her illness was of such seriousness that she could not respond to treatment. She had been failing for some time past, but not seriously enough to be confined to bed until about ten weeks ago. Olley Bell Cochran was born in Laclede, Mo., in 1868, being the only daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Cochran and would have been 62 years of age March 10 of this year. She came with her parents to Morrison when four years old, and this has since been her home, with the exception of one year's residence in Albany, Ill. She attended the public schools of this city and was united in marriage Oct. 17, 1885, to Frank Kramer, the late Hon. Judge Wm. J. McCoy officiating.
