What is the shortest mathematicians joke?
Let epsilon be smaller than zero.
A mathematician, a biologist and a physicist are sitting in a street cafe watching people going in and coming out of the house on the other side of the street. First, they see two people going into the house. Time passes. After a while, they notice three persons coming out of the house. The physicist: "The measurement wasn't accurate." The biologists: "They have reproduced". The mathematician: "If now exactly one person enters the house then it will be empty again." A conjecture both deep and profound Is whether a circle is round.

Israli theoretical physicist, who worked independently of Gell-Mann but almost simultaneously (1961) devised a method of grouping baryons in such a way that they fell into logical families. Now known as the Eightfold Way (after Buddha's Eightfold Path to Enlightenment and bliss), the scheme grouped mesons and baryons (e.g., protons and neutrons) into multiplets of 1, 8, 10, or 27 members on the basis of various properties. American surgeon who headed teams that performed the first human lung transplant in 1963; the first animal-to-human heart transplant in 1964; and a double-lung transplant that left the heart in place in 1987. Three years before Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful human-to-human heart transplant, on 23 Jan 1964, 68-year-old Boyd Rush was admitted to the hospital. No human was heart available; Hardy decided to use the heart of a chimpanzee named Bino. The newly-transplanted heart beat on its own; but it was too small to maintain independent circulation and Rush died after 90 minutes. Hardy had to endure some severe criticism. Overall, his work helped to alter perceptions about the transplantation process. Mikhail Semyonovich Tswett

Interpretation

Ernst Eduard Kummer Born : Jan. 29, 1810 in Sorau, Brandenburg, Prussia (now Germany) Died : May 14, 1893 in Berlin, Germany Biography Eduard Kummer's father, Carl Gotthelf Kummer was a physician. However he died when Eduard was only three years old. Eduard and his older brother were brought up by their mother. Eduard recieved private coaching before entering the Gymnasium in Sorau when he was nine years old. In 1828, Kummer entered the University of Halle with the intention of studying Protestant theology. Fortunately for the good of mathematics Kummer recieved mathematics as part of his degree, designed to provide a proper foundation to the study of philosophy. Kummer's mathematics lecturer H. F. Scherk inspired his interest in mathematics and Kummer soon was studying mathematics as his main subject, although at this stage he still saw it as leading to a later study of philosophy. In 1831 Kummer was awarded a prize for a mathematical essay he wrote on a topic set by Scherk. In the same year he was awarded his certificate to enable him to teach in schools and, on the strength of his prize winning essay, he was awarded a doctorate. During session 1831-32 Kummer taught a probationary year at the Gymnasium in Sorau where he has been educated. Then he was appointed to a teaching post at the Gymnasium in Liegnitz, now Legnica in Poland. Kummer held his teaching post in Liegnitz for 10 years. There he taught mathematics and physics and sometimes other topics. Some of his students had great ability, and conversely they were extremely fortunate to find a school teacher of Kummer's quality and ability to inspire. His two most famous students were Kronecker and Joachimsthal and under Kummer's guidance, they were undertaking mathematics research while teaching at Liegnitz. He published a paper on hypergeometric series in Crelle's Journal in 1836 and he sent a copy of the paper to Jacobi. This led to Jacobi, and later Dirichlet, corresponding with Kummer on mathematical topics and they soon realized the great potential for the highest level of mathematics that Kummer possessed. In 1839, although still a school teacher Kummer was elected to the Berlin Academy of Sciences on Dirichlet's recommendation. Jacobi now realized that he had to find Kummer a university professorship.

This section covers the reference and user manual for all functions contained in the source code module g_math.inc. The corresponding declaration file is g_math.bi. The compiled library is contained in g_lib.dll and the declaration file with all exported functions in g_lib.bi. If the file g_lib.bas is compiled, the compilation of this source code is always included in the resulting DLL. (g_lib.dll). Routine math procedures and makros are not explaned here (refer to any good textbook on math) , only more specific functions and procedures are fully documented.

Changes since version 5.2: functions and procedures that are completely independent of the GMT context are now compiled to a specific general purpose DLL: g_indep.dll. The declarations for all exported functions can be found in the file g_indep.bi.
Changes since version 5.9: manu math function added. New general Triangle-solver function.
Procedures for the conversion from polar to cartesian complex numbers and vice versa.

Laurie Snell - I wonder if you could do me a favor. I am trying to find the origin of the mathematician-baker story. The version I heard was that Poincare bought bread once a day from his local baker. The bread was supposed to weigh 1 kilo but afer a year of record keeping Poicare found a nice normal distribution with mean 950 gr. He called the police and they told the baker to behave himself. One year later Poicare reported to the police that the baker had not reformed. The police confronted the baker and he said "How could Poicare have known that we always gave him the largest loaf? Poincare then showed the police his record for this year which was again a bell shaped curve with max at 950 gr. but trucated on the left side. There is an exhibit at the Boston Science Museum about this but there is no reference given. Could you ask your newsgroups if anyone knows the orgin of this story? Thanks.
