Non Fiction Book Reviews #137 THE TWINKLING OF AN EYE: MY LIFE AS AN ENGLISHMAN by Brian W. Aldiss Astounding which became a passion. With the coming of World War II, Brian joined the British Army and was shipped to fight in Burma becoming part of the "Forgotten Army" fighting the Japanese and disease. Although he never fired his weapon in battle the years he spent marching through the jungle had a maturing effect on him. In India he was training for the invasion of Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped and the war was over. In the summer of 1947 he returned to England, as a civilian, to attempt to make a living. Back at home Brian decided that he wasted to be a writer, but he needed a job and he got one at a book shop in Oxford. Two and a half years at Frank Sanders' book shop and he plunged into reading non fiction of all types to educate himself. Living in Oxford, a university town, gave him the chance to experience the benefits offered. At the same time he began writing submitting stories including the British SF magazine Nebula . He married his first wife Olive in 1951 who he would divorce eleven years later after having two children with her. It was Olive who would type up his short stories and novels and after their divorce she would take the typewriter forcing Brian to lean to type. In 1955 Brian sold his first story establishing himself as a writer of social comedy and of science fiction. For the Oxford Mail he reviewed books. His first science fiction novel

So - what was the use? Sentiment needed a valid reason for its existence. The Free Companions fought bitterly, doggedly, with insane valor, in order to destroy themselves. The ancient motives for war had vanished. What was the use? All over Venus the lights of the great forts were going out - and this time they would never be lit again - not in a thousand lifetimes!"

Reporting the Invisible Society, Stuart kuttner managing editor, News of the WorldThank you good morning well Nick has covered the territory enormously well.
http://www.ukeditors.com/warwick/kuttner.htm
Society of Editors in partnership with UNISYS Reporting the Invisible Society Stuart Kuttner managing editor, News of the World Now I think that Nick has been generous in the motive that he attributes to government, and to the police and local authorities in terms of their wish to exercise their news management. I am not so sure that I would want to be quite so generous myself. However yesterday, refreshingly Mrs Claudia Corbin, the wife of the Labour MP Robin Corbin, I heard talking about the separation from her husband and the conflict over their son's education. She unhesitatingly acknowledged that her husband's position in public life legitimately placed her and her family in the public eye and from her there came no protestations about privacy for herself, her husband, their son or the family as a whole. I was encouraged by that. I was also interested in a radio interview I heard yesterday in which the details of the new schools curriculum plan was discussed with emphasis on equipping children for adult citizenship reported quite extensively in the morning papers today. One element of this programme according to the interview I heard yesterday, was to draw to youngsters' attention the importance and the value and the place of a free press in society. I thought perhaps unkindly, perhaps disingenuously that that sounded a little bit mischievous against the background in which we all are working. Somewhat ironical too. My experience is that the more responsible the press becomes the more angst it generates for itself over what should and what should not be published. The more it observes its own reluctance to publish and be damned, the more it follows PCC code, which I readily concede was an industry code, the more it seems to me the bullying shadow of state and legal censorship under whatever guise or name it cares to describe itself, manifests itself and this is why I think that this issue of invisible society or form of censorship is of great concern.
