My Great-Grandfather Johann Lambert Gier and Family Johann Lambert Gier, front row on left of his Mother (My Great Great Grandmother) and his five brothers. All six brothers were carpenters. Christian Gier, carpenter and father of six boys, was born in Schmithof, Germany in 1820. He died in Schmithoff, Germany March 27, 1870. Gertrude (Ostlander) Gier wife of Christian Gier and daughter of Born: 1824, married Christian Gier May 13, 1847; died May 31, 1921. Gertrude Ostlander, my great-great-grandmother had six children, all boys (pictured on this page). Following the death of my great, great grandfather Christian Gier, she moved to America with her six sons. Johann Lambert Gier, my great-great grandfather, was born in Schmithoff , Germany February 17, 1850, the eldest son of Christian Gier. Compulsory military service found him fighting in the Franco-Prussian war as a Corporal 1869-1873. John L. moved his wife and infant daughter to America in May of 1879 with his brother Henry and a Mr. Becker. He built the first hospital in Columbus, Nebraska. He died January 27, 1941 My Great- grandfather, John L. Gier and his grandson Jerome (my dad) May 14, 1926.

LAMBERT, Johann Heinrich Matemático alemão nascido em Mulhouse, Alsácia, 26 de agos­to de 1728 faleceu em Berlim, de setembro de 1777. Lambert era filho de um pobre alfaiate e viu-se obrigado a lutar pela própria educação. Felizmente, os homens de grande talento po­dem realizar-se mesmo sob condições adver­sas. Ganhava a vida como professor particu­lar, até chamar sobre si as atenções de Frede­rico II da Prússia, o que lhe permitiu passar a última década de sua vida em um relativo conforto. Provou ser II uma quantidade irra­cional (um século depois, Lindemann daria a esse valor uma qualificação ainda mais sutil) e introduziu, em trigonometria, as fun­ções hiperbólicas. Em 1760 publicou os resultados de suas investigações no campo da re­flexão da luz. Seu livro era redigido em latim e nele a palavra albedo (brancura) era usada para designar a fração da luz refletida de ma­neira difusa por um corpo. O termo continua em uso no jargão astronômico e representa a luminosidade que refletem os corpos planetá­rios. Lambert foi também o primeiro a elabo­rar métodos destinados a medir de modo pre­ciso intensidades luminosas e, em sua honra, a unidade de intensidade luminosa foi chama­da lambert.
