(All orders are now being shipped from Raleigh, North Carolina) Cornelius Lanczos (1893-1974) was a physicist and mathematician who had a profound impact on the foundations of twentieth century science. His papers cover a vast array of disciplines, including general relativity, quantum mechanics, scientific computation, applied mathematics and numerical analysis. This Collection provides documentation (a) that Lanczos was indeed one of the twentieth century's most versatile and innovative scientific minds, and (b) that many of Lanczos's ideas are still of interest to present-day research in physics and applied mathematics. This Collection will be of special interest to theoretical physicists, numerical analysts and science historians. The Cornelius Lanczos Collected Published Papers with Commentaries (Lanczos Collection or CLCPPC herein-after referred to as the Collection) represents the second phase of a two-part celebration of the life and work of Cornelius Lanczos. The first phase of this celebration occurred in December 1993 when North Carolina State University's College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences hosted the Cornelius Lanczos International Centenary Conference. There he had several inspiring teachers who were to make a great impression on Lanczos. His physics teacher was who first interested Lanczos in relativity. His mathematics teacher was and Lax writes in [2]:- Lanczos was much influenced by ; he learnt from him about Fourier series , orthogonal polynomials, and interpolation. It is likely that Lanczos was influenced by 's style of lecturing... After graduating in 1915, Lanczos was appointed an assistant at the Technical University of Budapest. He worked on relativity theory and after writing his dissertation Relation of Maxwell's Aether Equations to Functional Theory he sent a copy to Einstein . It impressed Einstein who replied:- I have read your work in as much detail as my present excess of work allows. I can say that it is sound and original thinking. It makes you worthy of the doctorate. I am pleased to give you my permission to honour me by dedicating it to me.

Cornelius Lanczos
  • Educated as a physicist and is most noted as the biographer of Albert Einstein 1920's - Developed an iterative algorithm for the solution of the eigenvalues of large matrices. The algorithm incorporated the orthonormalization of the basis functions, which made it impractical. 1930's and 1940's - Extensive work trying to improve the Fourier Transform; devised a doubling algorithm using trigonometric identities, to increase the number of Fourier coefficients witht the same amount of work; published in the Journal of the Franklin Institute; it's importance was not fully realized. 1866 - Gauss wrote the FFT algorithm in Latin, not discovered until 1950's Lanczos authored two books:
      Applied Analysis, Prentice Hall, 1956
1972 - C.C. Page's Cambridge University thesis proves that the eigenvalue converges as the basis functions loose orthogonality, thus O(N). 1972 - present: Used extensively by Cullen and Willoughby

Proceedings in Applied Mathematics 73
This scholarly volume describes Lanczos' life (1893-1974) and presents a clear development of the many fields he opened. ... a collection of seven photographs of Lanczos from 1910 to 1972...is followed by a fascinating 28-page annotated story, "Cornelius Lanczos: A Biographical Essay," by Barbara Gellai. The fortuitous inclusion of this excellent biography makes the proceedings a more complete and desirable volume! ... Mathematics of Computation, January 1996
Conference held December 12-17, 1993, North Carolina State University, Raleigh
This volume contains a collection of plenary and minisymposium papers addressing various aspects of computational mathematics, theoretical physics, and astrophysics. The conference offered a unique opportunity for interaction among members of these scientific communities; nearly 600 participants shared their problems, perspectives, and experiences in an attempt to make progress on some of the central, unsolved problems in the physical and mathematical sciences.
The conference reflected the vast scope of interests of Cornelius Lanczos (1893-1974), a mathematician and physicist who had a profound impact on the foundations of twentieth century science. His research covered a wide array of disciplines, including general relativity, quantum mechanics, scientific computation, and computers. Lanczos pioneered the investigation of a large number of problems that are still of vital interest today.

Wilner from Bethesda, MD USA Lanczos' work is a fine, thorough text that covers most areas of advanced analysis in a readable style. His derivations are clear, his tangential explorations are absorbing, and he cites practical examples. The one area in which I find the book weak is harmonic functions, potential theory, and the applications of these to the calculus of resides. Consequently, the book is not "one-shop stopping" for all the mathematical techniques that an electrical engineer or physicist might require in his bag of tricks....
