Brown, Assistant Professor Theoretical investigations of the foundations of mechanics, field theory, and relativity are undertaken by Dr. Davis and Dr. Katzin . This research includes investigations of (2n+2)-dimensional formulations of mechanics, relativistic fluids, the structure of gauge theories, and formulations of gravitational theories (with and without torsion), including extended Kaluza-Klein type field theories. Classical methods of fiber bundles are employed. These studies include a long-term program to develop new methods for determining symmetries (space-time, internal, and dynamical) and formulating associated constants of motion and conservation laws. The results of this research have applications in plasma physics, astrophysics, cosmology, and particle physics. The work in mathematical and theoretical physics by the associated and visiting faculty members of the Physics and Mathematics Departments includes a broad range of topics, such as the mathematical formulation of physics theories, gauge theories, Hamiltonian and generalized Hamiltonian methods, geometric quantization, canonical and path integral quantization of the gravitational field, and the quantum mechanical and thermodynamic properties of black holes. This interdisciplinary mathematical and theoretical physics research by physics faculty and graduate students is often done in collaboration with Dr's. J. David Brown, R. O. Fulp, A. Kheyfets, J.
