AQIS Adelaide is strengthening its protection of Australia from potentially devastating diseases like foot and mouth (FMD) in the face of an eight per cent increase in international airport arrivals over the past year, according to Regional Manager, Robert Langlands. Over the last week, AQIS's enhanced FMD-related quarantine activities at Adelaide international airport included:
    • processing approximately 1120 passengers who meet an FMD profile, including all agricultural industry workers, backpackers and anyone who has visited a non-metropolitan area in a country where FMD is endemic; seizing some 440 prohibited items; and arranging disinfections of contaminated clothing or footwear from about 370 passengers.

Just because the foot and mouth disease (FMD) threat is most immediate at Australia's international airports doesn't mean quarantine authorities are focusing all their attention on our capital cities. AQIS has also put in place enhanced quarantine controls at South Australia's regional ports to ensure we're protected from potentially devastating diseases such as FMD according to AQIS Regional Manager Robert Langlands. "We inspect overseas ships' cargo very closely to make sure they're free from contaminants - including soil - that might harbour disease agents as well as weed seeds and plant pathogens," Robert says. "AQIS officers are inspecting 100 per cent of shipping containers for risks such as soil, and applying appropriate treatments. "They also seal ships' supplies of meat and dairy products derived from FMD risk countries, and these can't be used for provisions while ships are in Australian ports," Robert says.

    Introduction to Automorphic Forms
    Professor: Henri Darmon
    Classes: Tuesday 3:00-5:00.
Room: McGill University, Burnside Hall BH 708.
Joint Seminar with Goren's course : Thursday 4:00-6:00 (or when we drop from exhaustion, whichever comes first).
Room: Concordia University, library building LB 559-6.
Office hours: Wednesday 11:30-1:00, in my office (BH 1221).
    Syllabus

The course will begin with a discussion of Tate's Thesis, which amounts to the theory of automorphic forms on GL(1). Tate's work was published as a chapter in the famous Proceedings volume "Algebraic Number Theory" edited by Cassels and Frolich, and I will hand it out in class to those who are unable to secure a copy.
We will initially follow the book of Ramakrishnan and Valenza, which is devoted entirely to this topic, and provides alot of helpful bacground material. It is highly recommended for the students who are seeing this material for the first time.

    Professor Robert Rowthorn
Of particular interest to Professor Rowthorn is the relationship between manufacturing and services in advanced economies. This was the subject of his book "De-industrialisation and Foreign Trade" (CUP 1987), written jointly with the late John Wells and of a number of later articles. He was one of the first economists to argue that manufacturing employment in the UK was too large for our needs and that sustained economic growth would involve a transfer of people from manufacturing jobs into service employment. However, he now believes that the decline of manufacturing employment in the UK has been excessive, both in comparison with other country and in relation to our current needs. Return to Top

Robert M. Solow was born in 1924 in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his academic degrees at Harvard University from which he graduated with a PhD in Economics in 1951. Professor Solow is Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he has been a Professor of Economics since 1949. He taught Macroeconomics and other subjects to undergraduate and graduate students until January 1996.

    National Competitiveness Summit 2001
The National Competitiveness Network The topic of the first Summit was 'Competitiveness in the UK' and the event provided a platform for CMI to interface with leaders from industry, government and academe about how it can support the improvement of the UK's economic performance. The Summit was hosted by CMI Chairman, Lord Trotman of Osmotherly, and the programme included a lively discussion forum chaired by Mr James Naughtie (BBC Today) and an address from the Rt. Hon. Paul Boateng MP, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury. The morning began with an introduction to CMI by the two Executive Directors, Professor John Vander Sande (MIT) and Professor Alan Windle (Cambridge). This was followed by a presentation by Professor Robert Solow (Nobel Laureate in Economics, MIT) on information technology and the productivity performance of the US. This was followed by a presentation by Professor Robert Rowthorn (University of Cambridge) on competitiveness and productivity in the UK. The two high-class presentations naturally prompted a great deal of interest and debate from the floor. The next presentation was by Sir Alan Langlands, who focussed on the regional level - evaluating the specific problems, needs and successes experienced by the Scottish Institute for Enterprise.
