Laplace, Pierre (1749-1827)

French physicist and mathematician who put the final capstone on mathematical astronomy by summarizing and extending the work of his predecessors in his five volume (1799-1825). This work was important because it translated the geometrical study of mechanics used by Newton to one based on calculus known as physical mechanics. In Laplace proved the dynamical stability of the solar system (with tidal friction ignored) on short time scales. On long time scales, however, this assertion was proven false in the early 1990s. Laplace solved the libration of the Moon In this work, he frequently omitted derivations, leaving only results with the remark "il est aisé à voia" (it is easy to see). It is said that he himself could not always fill in the derivations later without days of work. For a revealing quote, see the remark made by Laplace's translator Bowditch . After reading Napoleon is said to have questioned Laplace on his neglect to mention God. In stark contrast to

What we know is not much. What we do not know is immense.
~ Quoted in A De Morgan Budget of Paradoxes.
Born: March 23, 1749 in Beaumont-en-Auge, Normandy, France
Died: March 5, 1827 in Paris, France
There is little record of intellectual distinction in the family beyond what was to be expected of the cultivated provincial bourgeoisie and the minor gentry. Laplace attended a Benedictine priory school in Beaumont-en-Auge, as a day pupil, between the ages of 7 and 16. His father expected him to make a career in the Church and indeed either the Church or the army were the usual destinations of pupils at the priory school. At the age of 16 Laplace entered Caen University. As he was still intending to enter the Church, he enrolled to study theology. However, during his two years at the University of Caen, Laplace discovered his mathematical talents and his love of the subject. Credit for this must go largely to two teachers of mathematics at Caen, C Gadbled and P Le Canu of whom little is known except that they realised Laplace's great mathematical potential. Once he knew that mathematics was to be his subject, Laplace left Caen without taking his degree, and went to Paris. He took with him a letter of introduction to d'Alembert from Le Canu, his teacher at Caen. Although Laplace was only 19 years old when he arrived in Paris he quickly impressed d'Alembert. Not only did d'Alembert begin to direct Laplace's mathematical studies, he also tried to find him a position to earn enough money to support himself in Paris. Finding a position for such a talented young man did not prove hard, and Laplace was soon appointed as professor of mathematics at the Ecole Militaire.

Writing the biography of a mathematician poses special problems. Richard Westfall's magnificent biography of Newton, Never At Rest , gives a revealing picture of a most unusual personality, from the windmill he made as a boy to his domination of the Royal Society as an old man. But there is something wrong with the sections in which Westfall describes Newton's mathematics. I thought at first that it was just my own stupidity that I couldn't make sense out of Westfall's account. But when I looked up Newton's own words in D. T. Whiteside's edition of Newton's Mathematical Papers , I saw what had happened. Westfall had copied out only part of what Newton had written. (He had also omitted Whiteside's explanatory notes.) Westfall just didn't give enough context to make the problem clear. I think it is not unreasonable to suggest that Westfall didn't completely understand Newton's mathematics. We are happy to have a sensitive biography; it would be even better to have a biographer who also understood mathematics. But such biographers are rare. Charles Coulston Gillispie's new biography of Laplace is an expansion of an article which was published in the Dictionary of Scientific Biography in 1978. Robert Fox and Ivor Grattan-Guinness have contributed chapters on Laplace's work in physics and on the history of the "Laplace transform". Princeton University Press has produced an attractive book, with a sturdy binding and an agreeable typeface.

    Pierre Simon Laplace (1749 - 1827)
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Pierre Simon Laplace was born at Beaumont-en-Auge in Normandy on March 23, 1749, and died at Paris on March 5, 1827. He was the son of a small cottager or perhaps a farm-labourer, and owed his education to the interest excited in some wealthy neighbours by his abilities and engaging presence. Very little is known of his early years, for when he became distinguished he had the pettiness to hold himself aloof both from his relatives and from those who had assisted him. It would seem from a pupil he became an usher in the school at Beaumont; but, having procured a letter of introduction to D'Alembert, he went to Paris to push his fortune. A paper on the principles of mechanics excited D'Alembert's interest, and on his recommendation a place in the military school was offered to Laplace. Secure of a competency, Laplace now threw himself into original research, and in the next seventeen years, 1771-1787, he produced much of his original work in astronomy. This commenced with a memoir, read before the French Academy in 1773, in which he shewed that the planetary motions were stable, and carried the proof as far as the cubes of the eccentricities and inclinations. This was followed by several papers on points in the integral calculus, finite differences, differential equations, and astronomy. During the years 1784-1787 he produced some memoirs of exceptional power. Prominent among these is one read in 1784, and reprinted in the third volume of the
