Pierre Simon de Laplace (17491827)
Laplace's achievements in applied mathematics and astronomy are many and far reaching. Starting in 1773, be applied his mathematical skills to problems in celestial mechanics. He carried out groundbreaking work on the orbital interaction between Saturn and Jupiter, Lunar orbital motion and circularization, the shape of planetary bodies, tides, and stability of the solar system. His work marked the triumph of Newtonian Mechanics, and together with the work of his fellow countryman Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813), established new standards of rigor and accuracy in positional astronomy. His Tables of planetary positions remained in use well into the nineteenth century. Laplace's researches in celestial mechanics culminated in the publication, between 1799 and 1825, of his five-volume In 1796 Laplace published his , a popular work aimed at describing the current state of cosmological thought. It it in this book that Laplace introduced his nebular hypothesis , according to which the solar system formed from the gravitationally-induced contraction of an initially large, diffuse and slowly-rotating cloud of interstellar gas.

The French astronomer and mathematician Pierre Simon de Laplace, b. Mar. 28, 1749, d. Mar. 5, 1827, is best known for his nebular hypothesis of the origin of the solar system. He also confirmed the long-term stability of the solar system by mathematically demonstrating the long-term periodicity of three apparently cumulative sets of irregularities in the motions of solar-system bodies. These three irregularities were, as follows: the acceleration of the mean (average) motions of the mutually perturbing planets Jupiter and Saturn, the acceleration of the mean motions of the mutually perturbing inner three Galilean satellites of Jupiter, and the acceleration of the mean motion of the Moon.
Laplace's monumental 5-volume work, Traite de mecanique celeste (Treatise on Celestial Mechanics, 1799-1825; Eng. trans., 1829-39), was the culmination of over a century of work devoted to the mathematical explanation, on the basis of gravitational theory, of the motions of the bodies of the solar system. Earlier, in his popular-level Exposition du systeme du monde (Exposition of the System of the World, 1796), he presented his famous nebular hypothesis, which viewed the solar system as originating from the contracting and cooling of a large, flattened, and slowly rotating cloud of incandescent gas. Among his other findings in astronomy was the existence of an invariable plane in our solar system about which the whole system oscillates.

Laplace, Pierre Simon

Laplace, Pierre Simon de (1749-1827)
French mathematician, astronomer, and physicist who, in 1796, announced an early version of the nebular hypothesis - the now generally-accepted theory of how our planetary system formed. The solar system, Laplace said, originated out of a gradually cooling cloud of gas, with the planets most remote from the center condensing first. This theory had a strong influence on subsequent speculation about the nature of our neighboring worlds. It implied that the inner worlds were younger and that, in particular, cloud-covered Venus might be an immature version of the Earth-a virgin world. By contrast, planets further from the Sun, such as Mars, would have formed later and therefore could be expected to be more highly evolved. Laplace's theory also suggested that planets are a natural consequence of the evolution of stars, so that many stars ought to have planetary retinues. It therefore provided powerful support for the doctrine of pluralism

Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827) French scientist born in Peaumont-en-peak (Calvados), in March 23rd 1749, and died in Paris, in March 5th 1827. At the age of 18, went to Paris, where D' Alembert proposed his name for professor of Mathematics in to Royal Military School (1768). In its work Traité de Mécanique Céleste invokes Newton's conclusions about the universal gravity. In the Physics domain, collaborated with Lavoisier in his calorimetry works (1780), formulated a mathematical theory of capillarity and the elementary laws of the electromagnetism, measured the speed of sound waves, etc. However, the most important work of Laplace was the Exposition du Système du Monde where he exposes its cosmogonic hypothesis according to which the Solar System would have origin in a primal nebula.
