A REVIEW OF COMMISSIONS GIVEN TO SILVERSMITHS BY THE COLLEGE AND BY VARIOUS BENEFACTORS For many years the College or benefactors to the College have commissioned plate from various silversmiths. It is possible that members of the College may not be aware of the Larmor Plate, and this brief review is only intended to refer to the Larmor Plate. Sir Joseph Larmor was a Fellow of the College and also Secretary of the Royal Society. He was elected to the Lucasian Chair (following in the footsteps of Sir Isaac Newton). At one time he was MP for the University and was awarded the freedom of the City of Belfast where he had grown up. He was knighted in 1909. By his Will (1938) he bequeathed a sum of money to the College to 'be employed to provide annually suitable rewards which may include pieces of plate together with or alternatively grants of money'. In 1943 the College Council adopted the following regulations for the Fund: the awards shall be made by the Council in the Easter Term each year on the recommendation of a Committee which shall consist of the Tutors and Dean, not less than three junior members of the College appointed by the Council, and such other persons as the Council may from time to time appoint. In making their recommendations the Committee shall take account of intellectual qualifications estimated on a wide basis, of moral conduct and practical activities and shall select those undergraduate members of the College, in number not fewer than four annually, whom they deem most worthy on any or all of these grounds. The award shall be a piece of plate engraved with the arms of the College and inscribed ‘Sir Joseph Larmor’s Plate and the year of the award’ together with a cheque.

George Gabriel Stokes
Born: 13 Aug 1819 in Skreen, County Sligo, Ireland
Died: 1 Feb 1903 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England
George Stokes established the science of hydrodynamics with his law of viscosity (1851), describing the velocity of a small sphere through a viscous fluid. Stokes published papers on the motion of incompressible fluids in 1842-43 and on the friction of fluids in motion and the equilibrium and motion of elastic solids in 1845. In 1849 Stokes was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. In 1851 Stokes was elected to the Royal Society and was secretary of the Society from 1854 to 1884 when he was elected president. He investigated the wave theory of light, named and explained the phenomenon of fluorescence in 1852, and in 1854 theorised an explanation of the Fraunhofer lines in the solar spectrum. He suggested these were caused by atoms in the outer layers of the Sun absorbing certain wavelengths. However when Kirchhoff later published this explanation Stokes disclaimed any prior discovery. Stokes developed mathematical techniques for application to physical problems, founded the science of geodesy, and greatly advanced the study of mathematical physics in England. His mathematical and physical papers were published in 5 volumes, the first 3 of which Stokes edited himself in 1880, 1883 and 1891. The last 2 were edited by Sir Joseph Larmor in 1887 and 1891.

(Rutherford on holiday. Boltzmann etc in Manchester 1903) The particle physics group at Manchester can be traced back to the start of the 20th Century. Arthur Schuster, professor of physics, relinquished his post in favour of Ernest Rutherford who then started a series of classic experiments on the nucleus in the department. The next great phase in Manchester was in the 1940s when Rochester and Butler observed the V particles in cosmic rays. These were K mesons and Lambda baryons and hence heralded the first observation of the strange quark. These was a massive exodus to Imperial College in the 1950s when Blackett left and many followed. Others (e.g. Rochester, Wilson,Hodson went to Durham and Leeds.) The group was revived in 1963 when John Ellison and Brian Dickinson finished their PhDs on nuclear physics and switched to HEP. Robin Marshall was their first PhD student. Paul Murphy was appointed professor in 1965 and led the group until his retirement in 1991. Robin Marshall returned as head of the group in 1992

sir joseph larmor in England first proposed in 1919 that dynamos consistingentirely of fluids might explain the creation of sunspot magnetic fields.

#25. Electric Currents from Space
When a bright aurora is seen in the auroral zone, a strong magnetic disturbance is usually also observed there. The disturbing magnetic field can be much stronger than that of a magnetic storm but it is strictly local, fading away quickly as one moves equatorward. This limited extent suggested that the currents which disturbed the field flowed somewhere nearby, probably near the auroral arcs. The Norwegian Kristian Birkeland, who carefully observed auroral disturbances around the turn of the century, concluded that those currents flowed parallel to the ground, along the auroral formation.
Dynamos
How can electric currents be generated in spaceor, for that matter, on the Sun and in the Earth's core? In all those cases, some electrically conducting fluid appears to be moving through a magnetic fieldplasma in space and on the Sun, molten iron (probably) in the Earth's core. It can then be shown from the principles of physics that if a closed electric circuit exists, parts of which are moving through a magnetic field while other parts are not
